Introducing the 2011-12 Daily Herald Academic Team May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Today, we introduce you to some amazing teenagers. The members of the 2011-12 Daily Herald Academic Team all have grades and test scores so stellar they could blind. But read past the test scores, and what you find are humble young people, dedicated to learning and intent on using education to further their goals.

  • Bartlett’s Mitch Sullivan, left, competes in the 3,200-meter relay last weekend at the St. Charles North sectional. The Hawks will participate in the event this weekend at the Class 3A state meet in Charleston.

Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

  • Lein, Jacobs blank Crystal Lake South May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
By her own admission, McKayla Lein was extremely nervous before pitching against Crystal Lake South in Wednesday's Class 4A Huntley regional softball semifinal game. Lein certainly didn't let nerves hinder her performance. The sophomore left-hander was simply outstanding in the pitchers circle, tossing a 5-hit shutout as second-seeded Jacobs knocked off third-seeded Crystal Lake South 4-0.

  • Crystal Lake S. makes quick work of Dundee-Crown May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Dundee-Crown baseball coach Tommy Parisi knew top-seeded Crystal Lake South had been a dominant force in every area all season long. But giving the Gators, who lead the Fox Valey area with a team batting average of .337, extra outs with their kind of offensive firepower, would hurt D-C real bad. The second inning of the Gators' 12-2 Class 4A Huntley regional semifinal win in five innings exemplified just that.

  • Jacobs wins first regional since 2005 May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Usually, when Crystal Lake South and Jacobs play each other on the girls soccer field it is a closely contested low-scoring affair. This was not one of them. Scoring early and often, top-seeded Jacobs blitzed the second-seeded Gators 4-0 in the championship game of the Class 4A Jacobs girls soccer regional Friday night in Algonquin.

Burlington Central, Cary-Grove have high state hopes May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Two programs with longstanding traditions of bringing home medals from the IHSA girls track and field state finals hope to continue leaving Charleston with hardware this weekend when the state finals commence for three classes at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Field. And while Burlington Central's contingent in the Class 2A meet is smaller than in years past, Rockets' coach Vince Neil is confident that all four of his girls could qualify for Saturday's finals and possibly bring home a medal.

  • Cary-Grove wins first sectional title May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove's boys track team went the extra mile. The Trojans rode their stellar 1,600-meter relay team — not to mention Josh Freeman's throwing — to what is believed to be the first sectional track championship in school history. The Trojans racked up 61 points, 3 more than Grant and Belvidere North, which tied for second at the Class 3A Hononegah sectional in Rockton Thursday night.

  • Jacobs blanks Larkin in regional opener May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
Lauren Grady is trying to make up for lost time. Missing 10 games due to an hamstring injury, Gradys injury seems to be fully healed. Scoring 3 goals, Grady led top-seeded Jacobs to a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Larkin in semifinal action in the Class 3A Jacobs regional Tuesday in Algonquin.

  • Jacobs upends Crystal Lake South May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Jacobs closer Zac Camacho arrived at the intersection of Pressure Ave. and Jam Street and hit the gas. Protecting a tenuous 1-run lead against league-leading Crystal Lake South in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs, Camacho put Tyler Salm in a 1-2 hole. Salm, a .447 hitter, fought off two good pitches. Camacho then reared back and notched his area-best fifth save of the season by getting Salm to swing through a fastball at the letters to preserve a 4-3 Jacobs victory.

  • Records fall at FVC meet May 11, 2012 12:00 AM
Five records fell at the Fox Valley Conference boys track and field meet held at Woodstock North Friday, including marks previously held by McHenry County track and field icons Marcus Popenfoose and Evan Jager. Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman got things rolling in the shot put competition. His heave of 64 feet, 6¼ inches not only won the event by almost 9 feet, it bettered the record of 61-3 set two seasons ago by former Huntley standout Marcus Popenfoose, who competed Friday for Auburn at the SEC championships in Baton Rouge, La.

  • Cary-Grove’s sectional supremacy continues May 10, 2012 12:00 AM
The seniors on the Cary-Grove girls track and field team went out the way they came in four years ago as champions. Buoyed by contributions across the board, the Trojans won the Class 3A Hononegah sectional by a 38-point margin Thursday. They netted 102 points to coast to victory over second-place Crystal Lake Central (64), which was followed by DeKalb (54), Grant (52), Hononegah (49.5) and Huntley (47). It marks the fourth straight season the Trojans have swept the McHenry County, Fox Valley Conference and sectional meet championships.
