  • Crystal Lake South clamps down on Cary-Grove Jan 24, 2015 12:09 AM
The Crystal Lake South boys basketball team was back in an all too familiar scenario early in the fourth quarter Friday against rival Cary-Grove, watching another lead slip away. But instead of reliving its own version of Groundhog Day, senior Matt Schingel personally made sure the Gators sealed the deal this time around. Schingel gated the Trojans’ second-half surge when he nailed South’s second 3-pointer of the game from the right corner with 5:30 remaining, which helped the Gators take a 38-27 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win at The Swamp.

  • Winning night for Huntley’s seniors Jan 22, 2015 10:33 PM
It was a night of mixed emotions for Huntley senior 152-pounder Brandon Meyer. Yes, the four-year varsity performer celebrated Senior Night with a pin of Crystal Lake South’s Justin Kattner in 2:36 but Meyer was saddened that it was his last meet before the Huntley wrestling faithful. Meyer’s effort propelled the Red Raiders to a 45-22 win over the visiting Gators in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Huntley Thursday.

  • Streamwood, basketball will miss retiring Prose’s presence Jan 22, 2015 10:20 PM
There are some constants you just know you’re always going to see when you walk into a gym. At Streamwood, one of those is assistant girls basketball coach Carl Prose.

  • Freshmen making their mark in Fox Valley Jan 22, 2015 1:31 PM
A varsity basketball coach’s decision to play freshmen has its pros and cons. Sometimes a coach’s hand is willfully forced by the sheer athleticism or size of an incoming freshman. For example, anyone in the Fox Valley area who last year witnessed the play of 6-foot-5 Larkin forward Christian Negron, 6-8 Jacobs center Cameron Krutwig or Hampshire 6-3 forward Brennen Woods as freshmen understood those players belonged in their respective lineups from a physical standpoint.

  • Defense propels Jacobs past Crystal Lake South Jan 17, 2015 1:01 AM
The Jacobs boys basketball team hasn’t employed full-court pressure often this season, but the Golden Eagles used it Friday against visiting Crystal Lake South and converted turnovers into points early and often in a 75-43 victory.

  • Woods helps Crystal Lake South edge Cary-Grove Jan 15, 2015 10:24 PM
Just about this time last year, Crystal Lake South was putting the finishing touches on a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title before making a serious run at an overall conference championship along with Cary-Grove. But what a difference a year makes. Heavy graduation losses combined with injuries have place both fine wrestling clubs in the middle of the conference pack this season, making Thursday night’s dual on the Gators’ home floor not quite the marquee matchup it would have been a year ago. With that said, the teams still put on an exciting show, giving a big senior night audience its share of thrills right up until the very end, when Frank Woods brought the Crystal Lake South crowd to its feet with a 9-4 decision in the final bout to give the Gators a 35-34 victory.

  • Crystal Lake South nips Larkin Jan 14, 2015 1:07 AM
Crystal Lake South senior guard Alex Reich proved in Tuesday’s 55-52 victory over Larkin that you don’t have to be the tallest player on the basketball court to affect the outcome of a high school game.

  • Andresen likes the progress D300 co-op is making Jan 14, 2015 9:48 PM
While the District 300 (Dundee-Crown, Hampshire, Jacobs) boys swimming team didn’t register a victory in a recent meet against the District 155 co-op team, coach Rick Andresen saw plenty of progress that has him optimistic about what lies ahead. “We had a good meet,” he said. “We saw a lot of encouraging things and we saw some things that need work. We are getting better, but we need to tighten some things. The times we swam were very respectable. We had nice time drops in some events. All of the hard work we did during the holiday break might be paying off. I’m pleased overall, especially with the improvement of our younger kids.”

  • Huntley cruises past Crystal Lake South Jan 13, 2015 10:59 PM

Dishing out 13 assists on 17 baskets, the team-oriented Crystal Lake South Gators were able to post a 54-48 victory over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Crystal Lake.

  • McHenry beats Crystal Lake South in 3 OTs Jan 10, 2015 8:03 AM
For all the clutch shots Crystal Lake South junior guard Zach Geske buried to keep the Gators alive in their 48-46 triple overtime loss to McHenry Friday, there will be an unbelievable, but questionable, buzzer-beater by the Warriors’ Brian O’Toole that will overshadow Geske’s effort and be up for debate by many Gator fans for a very, very long time.
