  • Crystal Lake South blanks Dundee-Crown May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
The postseason couldn't have started out any better for the Crystal Lake South girls soccer team. The Gators dominated possession and kept Dundee-Crown from getting any good scoring opportunity Tuesday as CL South defeated the Chargers, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Crystal Lake South regional. "It's good motivation to help us get through," said Gators senior Mackenzie Taldone, who scored the final 2 goals. "We've definitely been put as underdogs during the conference so we're definitely going to push through regionals and show people who we actually are."

Former Crystal Lake South softball standout Emily Mahoney's college career didn't end quite like she would have imagined. Mahoney took a tough loss in the circle in River Forest-based Dominican University's 7-4 loss in 9 innings to Concordia University Wisconsin in the Northern Athletics Conference tournament. Concordia scored 3 unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull away and overshadow some clutch pitching from Mahoney in the latter stages of the contest.

This year, Hampshire is enjoying the best of both worlds. The Whip-Purs are fresh off winning the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division team title in only their second year in the conference. Hampshire, which finished third overall in the 14-team FVC meet, will look to continue that season-long success at Friday's Class 2A Burlington Central sectional. At the sectional level, the top two place-finishers in each event and any individual or relay team equaling or surpassing the minimum state-qualifying standard in each event advance to the state finals in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.
