  • Best and worst on Fox Valley report cards Oct 31, 2014 5:30 AM
    A majority of Fox Valley high schools saw an increase in their ACT composite scores, according to 2014 Illinois Report Card data released today. Only 10 of 23 high schools scored at or above the state average score of 22.2 for the college entrance exam. The best among them was Kaneland, which improved the most going from 21.1 to 22.2. Geneva High School maintained the highest ACT score at 24.2.

    For the second year, Fox Valley school districts saw modest gains, and significant dips in standardized test scores. Yet, educators at the two largest school districts say their students are “improving” in the areas of mathematics and reading per a new “growth” score assigned to each district based on the progress of individual students. Judging a school’s performance by test scores alone is no longer the primary measure, said Laura Hill, assessment and accountability director for Elgin Area School District U-46.

    An acting superintendent is running Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 while the school board explores more permanent options. Superintendent Donn Mendoza, who was under contract to lead the district through June of 2016, stepped down last week. School board members accepted his resignation during a special meeting Thursday and then promoted Kathy Hinz, the assistant superintendent of student services and professional development.

    It's not an exact science, but educators in Huntley Unit District 158 say more challenging coursework, continued adjustments to the curriculum and high expectations of all students helped high school juniors again raise the bar in a statewide science assessment. The number of Huntley High School juniors who met or exceeded state standards in science jumped 8.1 percentage points.

Susan Harkin, who served as the business office manager from 2000 to 2006, will succeed Cheryl Crates. Crates is retiring after eight years in the district.
