  • Crystal Lake Central catches up with Huntley Apr 11, 2014 10:41 PM
If only high school girls softball games were 6 innings, Huntley would have earned a 5-1 win and freshman pitcher Kateri Conklin would have earned a victory. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, games are 7 innings. Visiting Crystal Lake Central rallied for 5 runs in the seventh and 1 in the eighth for a come-from-behind 7-6 win in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Huntley on Friday afternoon.

  • Jacobs soars past Crystal Lake Central Mar 3, 2014 11:22 PM
Jacobs boys basketball coach Jim Roberts believes reserve guard Cory Boeckh plays an important role off the bench for the Golden Eagles. And Jacobs, which struggles to score at times, was badly in need of Boeckh’s 3-point prowess early when it struggled to score in the first half of its 46-25 opening-round win over the sixth-seeded Tigers Monday night, the hosts of the Class 4A Crystal Lake Central regional.

  • Dundee-Crown gets a leg up on regional Feb 28, 2014 11:49 PM
Location, location, location. Maybe it’s time to call Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber “the realtor.” Maybe not. And he sure wasn’t the director of the Oscar-nominated movie Silver Linings Playbook. But there was a distinctive advantage for Huber’s Chargers in Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference crossover at Crystal Lake Central, which the Chargers won 68-45 in Crystal Lake.

Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle and Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts expressed surprise for different reasons when seeds for the upcoming Class 4A Elgin boys basketball sectional were released on the IHSA website Thursday afternoon. Crystal Lake Central (3-21, 2-8 FVC Fox) is the No. 6 seed.

  • Einloth, Grayslake North tame Crystal Lake Central Feb 15, 2014 11:54 PM
Stretched out on the bench, Aidan Einloth figured he was done for the night. The Grayslake North sophomore got to work early Saturday night and helped the Knights build up a cushy 23-point lead over visiting Crystal Lake Central through three quarters. Having scored 23 points of his own by that point, Einloth began the fourth quarter on the bench, ready to cheer on the reserves for the rest of the way. Good thing he didn’t get too comfortable, or remove his shoes. Grayslake North wound up rolling to a 60-40 victory over Crystal Lake Central, but Einloth and some of the other starters and key players had to jump back in when things got interesting with about four minutes remaining.

  • Crystal Lake South happy with FVC runner-up finish Feb 1, 2014 8:03 PM
Sure, Crystal Lake South coach Ross Ryan would like to have hoisted the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament championship trophy Saturday at McHenry High School. But Ryan was happy with his team’s second place conference finish. Wrestling without 195-pounder Brian Pence, the Gators (163 ˝ points) were runner-up to Crystal Lake Central, which claimed top honors with 199 points. Cary-Grove was third a half point behind South with 163 points.

McHenry will head into the final day of the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament just ahead of Crystal Lake Central and CL South when action resumes Saturday morning, beginning with the semifinal round at the Warriors’ West campus. Both Central and South trail McHenry by 4.5 points, 88.5 — 84.0, while Dundee-Crown and Huntley round out the top 5 with 75 and 71 overall points. Cary-Grove stands sixth with 70 points.

  • Cork, Hampshire dump Crystal Lake Central Dec 17, 2013 10:02 PM
Ryan Cork most likely slept well Tuesday night. Playing all 32 minutes, Cork filled the stat sheet with 27 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in leading Hampshire to a 77-61 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division boys basketball win over host Crystal Lake Central. It was the conference opener for the Whip-Purs (3-5, 1-0).

  • Crystal Lake S. outlasts Crystal Lake C. Dec 7, 2013 9:45 PM
Talk about a momentum changer. In a blink of an eye — actually 3 minutes, 38 seconds — Crystal Lake South turned a 2-point deficit into a 14-point lead. A 16-0 run in the third quarter propelled the Gators to a 77-65 win over Crystal Lake Central in Fox Valley Conference crossover action at South Saturday night. The game was part of the sister schools’ Night of Hoops.

  • Larkin falls to Sycamore Nov 23, 2013 7:38 PM
With only seven players in uniform, Larkin’s girls basketball team was a bit undermanned to begin with Saturday. The Royals then dug themselves a big first-half hole. They tried to dig their way out of it in the second half but came up short, falling 45-37 to Sycamore at the Central Thanksgiving Tournament in Burlington.

  • Burlington Central routs Crystal Lake Central Nov 22, 2013 10:20 PM
Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith was quite happy to see the difference between his team’s first and second games of the season. A 43-point victory usually pleases coaches. The Rockets shot over 55 percent and held Crystal Lake Central to just 9 points in the final three quarters to beat the Tigers, 59-16, in Pool A play of the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Huntley eases past Crystal Lake Central Nov 19, 2013 10:53 PM

Outscoring Crystal Lake Central 32-12 in the second and third quarters, Huntley cruised to a 62-33 win over the Tigers in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Huntley Tuesday night.

  • Burlington Central preparing to leave Big Northern Nov 18, 2013 10:57 PM
Burlington Central intends to leave the Big Northern Conference to join a new league, and the Rockets have company. Under a proposal presented to the District 301 school board by Burlington Central principal Matthew Haug and athletic director Steve Diversey at Monday’s meeting, the school would withdraw from the Big Northern Conference’s East Division following the 2014-15 school year along with Marengo, Harvard and Genoa-Kingston, all original members of the BNC, founded in 1991.

  • Crystal Lake South breezes to regional crown Oct 31, 2013 9:07 PM
Crystal Lake South’s girls volleyball team had absolutely no interest in playing a third game. After winning the first game 25-14, the Gators trailed rival Crystal Lake Central 19-8 in the second game and a third game seemed inevitable. But, keyed by a 12-2 run, top-seeded South rallied to win the second game 25-23 and the Class 4A Dundee-Crown regional championship over second-seeded Crystal Lake Central Thursday night in Carpentersville.
