  • Second-half slump slows Grayslake North Oct 3, 2014 12:23 AM
Grayslake North senior Titus Booker seemed to be well on his way to another record-setting rushing performance at halftime of Thursday night’s Fox Valley Conference Fox Division football game at Crystal Lake Central. The Indiana-bound Booker needed just 9 carries to pile up 263 yards in the first 24 minutes at Owen Metcalf Field. Four of his touches resulted in long sprints to the end zone as the Knights went to the locker room with a 4-point lead. But when they had to go back to the locker room with 8:25 left in the third quarter for lightning delays that totaled an hour and 12 minutes it was with a 3-point deficit. The Knights (3-3, 2-1) didn’t score again until there was 1:10 to play and Booker was limited to 22 second-half yards. CL Central (4-2, 2-2) held on for a 37-34 victory that ended at 11:10 p.m. before just a smattering of the big crowd that was originally in attendance.

  • Huntley claims 3rd FVC title in 4 years Oct 2, 2014 7:08 PM
After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

  • Cary-Grove senior Luloff wins FVC crown Oct 1, 2014 7:12 PM
Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

  • Crystal Lake Central upends Crystal Lake South Sep 20, 2014 12:31 AM
You can call them party crashers all you want, but milestone wins are hard to come by for football teams and when you’re Crystal Lake Central repeatedly getting beat by your crosstown rival for the last 15 years, it was more than just OK if the Tigers wanted to party like it was 1999 after their 7-3 win over Crystal Lake South at Ken Bruhn Field Friday night in Crystal Lake.

Lauren Van Vlierbergen was tired of a being a runner-up. So the talented Jacobs senior did something about it. After finishing second the last 2 years, Van Vlierbergen easily claimed top honors at Saturday’s McHenry County girls cross country meet held at Crystal Lake’s Lippold Park Saturday.

Crystal Lake Central 42, Grant 6: Down 14-6 with 10:14 left in the second quarter Friday night when their season opener was suspended due to lightning, the visiting Bulldogs had little go their way Saturday. The loss spoiled the Grant coaching debut of Vito Andriola. Ryan Williams scored 3 touchdowns for Crystal Lake Central.

  • FVC Valley will be a dogfight again Aug 25, 2014 11:50 PM
Jacobs is determined to prove last year’s undefeated Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title was just the beginning of a long reign. Cary-Grove is out to claim its eighth FVC title in 11 seasons, thereby proving its 2013 second-place finish was an anomaly, not the new norm. While the head-to-head matchup between those teams in Algonquin in Week 7 will go a long way to deciding a champion, other hungry teams like deep Huntley, playoff-seasoned Dundee-Crown, reworked Crystal Lake South and improving McHenry won’t concede a thing to the Golden Eagles or Trojans.

  • Crystal Lake Special Olympian runs ‘like lightning’ Jun 12, 2014 11:16 AM
After a three-year hiatus from Special Olympics, Brent Kampert’s comeback in the sport he loves — running — was “like lightning.” Kampert, 28, of Crystal Lake earned a spot in this month's Special Olympics 2014 USA Games with a record-setting performance in the 2013 Illinois Summer Games, running 100 meters in 11 seconds.

  • Jacobs moves on, will face Barrington next May 26, 2014 10:28 PM
They waited — 93 minutes to be exact — but in the end, it had rained too much to make Jacobs’ softball field playable for the top of the seventh inning. Considering all the games the Golden Eagles had lost in the seventh inning this season, maybe there was some poetic justice to that. The Eagles registered a 3-1 victory Monday over Crystal Lake Central in the play in game of the Class 4A Cary-Grove regional.

  • Believe it — Hampshire a conference softball champion May 19, 2014 9:14 PM
When Stacey Stepek took over as Hampshire’s head softball coach last season, she made it clear one of her top goals was to bring a winning attitude to a program that had struggled over the years to be a consistent winner. Consider Monday a huge step in that direction. Junior Haley Widmayer fired a 2-hitter and the Whip-Purs made 4 first-inning runs stand up in a 4-1 win at Crystal Lake Central that clinched Hampshire’s first conference championship in softball since the 1981 team shared the title in the now-defunct Big Eight Conference.

  • Grayslake North’s Booker streaks past FVC field May 16, 2014 11:13 PM
If you blinked you missed Grayslake North standout sprinter Titus Booker. Booker sprinted past the field at Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference meet held at Crystal Lake Central, winning the 100 meters in 11.06 and the 200 in a clocking of 22.20. “I just ran with my heart tonight and it worked out very well,” said the talented Knights junior. “I knew it would be good competition tonight so I trained hard. I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.

  • Hampshire can’t lock down FVC Fox just yet May 14, 2014 9:53 PM
Hampshire’s softball team was perfect on the year in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division, and on its way to the program’s first conference title in 33 years, but could not come up with the key hit on Wednesday and fell 5-1 to division foe Crystal Lake Central at Hampshire.

  • Crystal Lake Central catches up with Huntley Apr 11, 2014 10:41 PM
If only high school girls softball games were 6 innings, Huntley would have earned a 5-1 win and freshman pitcher Kateri Conklin would have earned a victory. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, games are 7 innings. Visiting Crystal Lake Central rallied for 5 runs in the seventh and 1 in the eighth for a come-from-behind 7-6 win in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Huntley on Friday afternoon.

  • Jacobs soars past Crystal Lake Central Mar 3, 2014 11:22 PM
Jacobs boys basketball coach Jim Roberts believes reserve guard Cory Boeckh plays an important role off the bench for the Golden Eagles. And Jacobs, which struggles to score at times, was badly in need of Boeckh’s 3-point prowess early when it struggled to score in the first half of its 46-25 opening-round win over the sixth-seeded Tigers Monday night, the hosts of the Class 4A Crystal Lake Central regional.

  • Dundee-Crown gets a leg up on regional Feb 28, 2014 11:49 PM
Location, location, location. Maybe it’s time to call Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber “the realtor.” Maybe not. And he sure wasn’t the director of the Oscar-nominated movie Silver Linings Playbook. But there was a distinctive advantage for Huber’s Chargers in Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference crossover at Crystal Lake Central, which the Chargers won 68-45 in Crystal Lake.
