  • Energetic Jacobs snaps losing skid Dec 8, 2014 10:54 PM
Sometimes the stat sheet can’t account for what Jacobs sophomore Carly Sidor brings to the table for the Golden Eagles girls basketball team. And after dropping two straight and 4 of their last 5 games, the Golden Eagles were in definite need of some energy to get them off the snide. Jacobs looked fluid from the get-go in its 51-34 Fox Valley Conference crossover road win over winless Crystal Lake Central Monday, as Jessica Powell led all scorers with 13 points on three 3-pointers. But it was Sidor’s 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and defense that set the tone for Jacobs (4-4), which jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter.

  • Free throw woes cost Dundee-Crown Dec 3, 2014 10:48 PM
Dundee-Crown boys basketball coach Lance Huber just needed to look at the free throw stat sheet to see why his Chargers dropped a 53-48 decision to Crystal Lake Central in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Crystal Lake Wednesday. Huber cringed when he saw the cold hard facts. His Chargers connected on only 4 of 12 from the free-throw line, including going just 3-for-10 effort from the line in the pivotal fourth quarter.

  • Geneva rolls to 3rd straight Thanksgiving title Nov 30, 2014 12:03 AM
Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston didn’t want to mince words after his Vikings blew out Crystal Lake Central 64-31 in the 8th annual Tigers Thanksgiving Tournament championship that his squad looked to be in midseason form already just 4 games into the season.

  • Burlington Central has easy time in opener Nov 18, 2014 11:06 PM
After finishing fourth in Class 3A a year ago, the Burlington Central girls basketball team knows in order to make it back to Redbird Arena it will have to be firing on all cylinders by the end of the year. Call Tuesday’s win over Crystal Lake Central in the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament a successful test run. The Rockets forced 13 turnovers and went on a 17-0 streak in the first quarter alone before cruising to a comfortable 66-17 win in the season opener.

  • Nolan, Crystal Lake South on a roll again Oct 30, 2014 9:33 PM
Crystal Lake South’s girls volleyball team certainly had enough motivation entering Thursday night’s Class 4A Prairie Ridge regional title match against rival Crystal Lake Central. A win would give South a second straight regional crown and a chance to play at home for the sectionals. The inspired Gators got the job done. Second-seeded South advanced to the its own sectional with a 26-24, 25-20 win over the talented top-seeded Tigers. It’s the 19th regional title in program history for the Gators.

  • Girls volleyball: Crystal Lake South disposes of Crystal Lake Central Oct 23, 2014 10:13 PM
Crystal Lake Central cruised to the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division championship with a perfect 12-0 slate. Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove shared the Valley title with identical 9-1 marks. So, when South-Central met Thursday in a Fox Valley Conference crossover tilt, a close, hard-fought match was anticipated. The host Gators made sure that didn’t happen. In a snappy 40 minutes, South disposed of intra-city rival Central 25-19, 25-21.

  • Jacobs Van Vlierbergen makes it a FVC trifecta Oct 18, 2014 8:43 PM
Muddy, wet conditions. Didn’t matter. Annoying mist. Didn’t matter. You get the picture. Nothing was going to deter Jacobs senior standout Lauren Van Vlierbergen from capturing her third straight Fox Valley Conference individual championship. Van Vlierbergen, who finished fourth in Class 3A in 2013, posted a 3-mile time of 17:53.8 to finish first at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference girls cross country championship at Hickory Nut Grove Park in Cary.

  • Crystal Lake Central ends Hampshire’s playoff hopes Oct 17, 2014 11:36 PM
Offense, defense and special teams are the three phases of football and teams looking to make a run in the playoffs need all three to be at their best. Crystal Lake Central used all three as it secured a trip to the playoffs with a 65-20 win over Hampshire in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play in Crystal Lake Friday night.

  • Jacobs nabs FVC girls tennis crown Oct 11, 2014 9:41 PM
Patience is a virtue. Just ask Jacobs girls tennis coach Jon Betts. During Betts’ 10-year tenure as the Golden Eagles coach, Jacobs finished second in the Fox Valley Conference six times. Jacobs is no longer a bridesmaid. For the first time since 2003, the Golden Eagles are conference champs.

  • St. Edward’s Scully advances to sectional Oct 8, 2014 9:33 PM
Ryann Scully will have a story to tell her kids and grandkids about one hole she played during the Class A Genoa-Kingston girls golf regional at The Oak Club Wednesday. What Scully can do, though, is tell a story in which she had an 18 — yes, an 18 — on a hole and still qualified for the sectional. “On the ninth hole I got into the sand by the green in two (shots),” Scully said, “and it was all downhill from there. It took me 12 shots to get out of that sand.”

  • Second-half slump slows Grayslake North Oct 3, 2014 12:23 AM
Grayslake North senior Titus Booker seemed to be well on his way to another record-setting rushing performance at halftime of Thursday night’s Fox Valley Conference Fox Division football game at Crystal Lake Central. The Indiana-bound Booker needed just 9 carries to pile up 263 yards in the first 24 minutes at Owen Metcalf Field. Four of his touches resulted in long sprints to the end zone as the Knights went to the locker room with a 4-point lead. But when they had to go back to the locker room with 8:25 left in the third quarter for lightning delays that totaled an hour and 12 minutes it was with a 3-point deficit. The Knights (3-3, 2-1) didn’t score again until there was 1:10 to play and Booker was limited to 22 second-half yards. CL Central (4-2, 2-2) held on for a 37-34 victory that ended at 11:10 p.m. before just a smattering of the big crowd that was originally in attendance.

  • Huntley claims 3rd FVC title in 4 years Oct 2, 2014 7:08 PM
After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

  • Cary-Grove senior Luloff wins FVC crown Oct 1, 2014 7:12 PM
Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

  • Crystal Lake Central upends Crystal Lake South Sep 20, 2014 12:31 AM
You can call them party crashers all you want, but milestone wins are hard to come by for football teams and when you’re Crystal Lake Central repeatedly getting beat by your crosstown rival for the last 15 years, it was more than just OK if the Tigers wanted to party like it was 1999 after their 7-3 win over Crystal Lake South at Ken Bruhn Field Friday night in Crystal Lake.
