That's when leg cramps forced him to slow down and relinquish the lead."It's hot out there, in case you didn't know," he told reporters after enduring temperatures in the mid-80s to win the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday.

    Even after winning Mid-Suburban League cross country championships te last two falls, Laura Maibuecher wasnt sure if she would run at the college level. "My parents suggested that if I was unsure, I should fill out the recruiting questionnaire to some of the colleges I applied to she said. And see if there was any interest in me. Sure enough, Purdue liked what it saw.The Boilermakers track and field staff invited Maibuecher for an official visit in January. Once there, Maibuecher couldnt resist when offered the opportunity to be a Division I competitor. She signed a letter of intent on Feb. 27.

Peter Bulandr, a former football standout at Stevenson, earned the same honor for men’s sports at North Central College in Naperville.

    Palatine’s boys cross country team proved on Nov. 5 it was the best high school team in Illinois. On Saturday, the Pirates showed they’re also one of the top elite teams in the nation. Running as the Palatine Cross Country Club, the boys from Palatine took fifth with 255 points at the Nike Cross Nationals at Portland Meadows in Portland, Ore.

    Sarah Miller of Barrington and Nate Nevius of Fremont, Neb., have taken another major step for the Judson University cross country programs as they will run in the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Wash. Both qualified as individuals at the CCAC Championships.

In the Class 3A state championship at Detweiller Park there was a turn of events in the team standings. As results were posted, Saints coach Denise Hefferin saw her runners Torree Scull, Sarah Hill, Mallory Abel, Jessica Evans, Kristin Sheehan, Lizzie Deutsch and Maddie Westerhoff had finished fourth behind New Trier, Wheaton Warrenville South and Naperville North.

    Burlington Central senior Clint Kliem (14:47) took seventh place in securing his second consecutive Class 2A all-state honor in the boys cross country state meet in Peoria. “I wanted to get out fast,” said Kliem of his opening charge. “I wanted to keep the leaders in site. I know the feeling and I knew what to expect coming into the race. I just kept grinding.”

    Palatine powers to state championship Nov 5, 2011 12:00 AM
    Palatine opened the boys cross country season with some high expectations, and the Pirates made it clear from the beginning they were aiming for a state title. On perfect fall afternoon Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Palatine reached its goal. Palatine had four runners in the top 29 in securing the Class 3A title with 114 points. “Our goal was to run our best race, and I think we ran our best race,” said Palatine coach Chris Quick, whose team secured the program's first state title. “We wanted to run our style of race and win or lose doing that.”

    Neuqua Valley, Glenbard South land at trophy stand again Nov 5, 2011 12:00 AM
    Neuqua Valley continued its strong tradition and Glenbard South reignited its own at the boys cross country state meets at Detweiller Park on Saturday. Neuqua Valley scored 144 points in securing third place in Class 3A. It's the Wildcats' fourth trophy in five years. Glenbard South took second in Class 2A with 128 points; it was the Raiders' first trophy since finishing first and third in Class AA in 2001 and 2002.

New Trier placed three runners in the top 11 to secure its first Class 3A state title with 82 points at Detweiller Park. Wheaton Warrenville South (144 points) took second and Naperville North (183 points) edged St. Charles East (183 points) with a sixth runner tie-breaker to take third.

    The Harper men's cross country team coached by Jim Macnider earned the National Junior College Athletic Association championship on Saturday in Springfield, Mass. It's the program's first title and it broke a seven-year title run by SUNY-Delhi, which finished second.
