With DuPage County Board members expected to consider a proposed ballot question that would ask voters if local politicians should be allowed to have more than one elected position, a mayor is abandoning his goal of becoming a dual office holder. Elmhurst Mayor Pete DiCianni said he will step down as mayor if he's elected in November to the county board. "This decision was difficult and has left my heart feeling heavier than imaginable," DiCianni said.

A new candidate has emerged in the race for the District 2 seat on the HYPERLINK "http://www.dupageforest.com/AboutUs/Commission/"DuPage County Forest Preserve commission. Longtime nature volunteer Don Kirchenberg this week filed to run as a Democrat against District 2 Republican incumbent Joe Cantore in the Nov. 6 election. All six forest preserve seats are up for election this fall and after the spring primary only the District 2 post was uncontested.

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak of Wheeling said Tuesday's primary election had nothing to do with a north/south "turf war" among county Republicans. He actually defeated his opponent, Palos Park resident Sean Morrison, in several south suburban townships, he said. Patlak will face another south suburban resident in November, when he squares off against Democrat Casey Griffin of Midlothian.
