A pedestrian bridge at Higgins Road and I-290/Route 53 near Schaumburg has been planned for years, but unfortunately it didn't come before a cyclist's death last week. Work on the bridge begins soon, but that intersection should be made safer immediately, a Daily Herald editorial says.

Nearly 27 years since the twin deluges of 1986 and 1987 set new flooding records affecting thousands of homes and businesses, only three of the six flood control projects proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers have been acted upon. Among the flood control projects that remain is the proposed expansion of Big Bend Lake reservoir in Des Plaines, one of the areas hardest hit by the April 17 storm.

A dog was reunited with its owner a day after it was lost in a Cook County Forest Preserve and nearly hit by cars on Golf Road in Hoffman Estates. “We lost hope, (thinking) that she was probably eaten by coyotes or hit by a car,” Joanna Drodz said.

A new bike path and route coming to Hoffman Estates through federal funding will provide more "continuity and connectivity" for Northwest suburban bicyclists, says Mike Hankey, the village's director of transportation. The project will include the paving of an existing trail in the Poplar Creek Forest Preserve; the creation of a north-south paved path along the Canadian National railroad tracks that will go under I-90 and Hoffman Boulevard bridges; and markings on the road through parts of Prairie Stone, north to the Prairie Stone Wellness Center.

No injuries were reported during a barn fire Tuesday afternoon on a vacant resident watchman property in the Cook County Forest Preserve District on Penny Road west of Old Sutton Road between South Barrington and Barrington Hills. The approximately 30-foot by 90-foot barn was already fully involved by the time Barrington Hills police officers first arrived on the scene after the 12:20 p.m. call, said Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District Fire Chief Jim Arie.

Harlem Ave., River Forest. Regular hours are Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cook County approves forest preserve budget Dec 19, 2012 12:00 AM
The Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board of Commissioners has unanimously passed the proposed 2013 budget, which calls for expenditures of $189 million, and no tax increase. The budget includes plans for a renewed focus on community engagement and outreach, working with community groups, churches, not-for-profits and other organizations to attract new users.

Mark Rapala, a senior at Saint Viator High School, earned the prestigious Eagle Scout rank on Sept. 29. Eagle Scout is the highest rank of Boy Scouts, and it includes the leading and completing of a self-chosen service project. Rapala led St. James Boy Scout Troop 166 of Arlington Heights, volunteers of the Friends of Busse Woods, family, friends and neighbors in an island restoration project in Busse Woods for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and for the overall community that enjoys the preserve.

The village of Barrington Hills and a citizens group have launched a campaign against Insurance Auto Auctions, which hopes to build a car storage and auction site in East Dundee, amid fears fear the business will pollute the local water supply with toxic fluids from leaky vehicles. But an East Dundee official accuses Barrington Hills of "significant fear mongering" and "all kinds of craziness."

Park Ridge man killed in Des Plaines hit-and-run Nov 6, 2012 12:00 AM
Cook County Sheriff Police are investigating a hit-and-run that killed a Park Ridge man Monday, authorities said. Ronald Bougan, 53, of the 00 to 100 block of North Northwest Highway, was found by a passerby at about 5:15 p.m. about four feet off east bound Touhy Avenue at the entrance to Iroquois Woods, said Cook County Sheriff spokesman Frank Bilecki. Bilecki said all indications show Bougan was struck by a vehicle Monday morning.

Picnics, golf to cost more next year in Cook CountyOct 17, 2012 12:00 AM
It will cost more to picnic and golf at Cook County Forest Preserve properties next year if the proposed budget is approved today. The district's property tax levy won't increase from last year, said Arnold Randall, the district's general superintendent.
