    People planning large group picnics in Cook County’s forest preserves can make reservations starting Friday. County officials say that picnic permits will be sold online and in person at the forest preserve headquarters in River Forest. Sales start at 8 a.m. Doors open for in-person sales at 7 a.m. Anyone planning a picnic for a group of 25 or more must obtain a permit. The prices vary depending on the size of the groups and other factors. The forest preserve system has nearly 300 picnic groves and nearly 10 percent of the annual permits are usually sold on the first day. This year, more than 1 million people took part in permitted picnic events in the forest preserves.

    Restoration work begins this month on hundreds of acres of Cook County preserve land near Wheeling. In a statement, forest preserve officials say contractors will remove trees from land near Wheeling. The restoration will continue through winter. The goal is to restore habitat for native plants and animals. Officials say removing trees increases how much sunlight reaches growth on the ground. It also provides shelter and reduces erosion. Forest Preserves chief ecologist Chip O’Leary says some landscape might look bare, but it’ll rebound with grasses and wildflowers in a season or two. O’Leary says the changes will help create a better habitat for animals and improve the land for hiking. Officials say the wood be used to produce lumber and firewood, which is estimated to save approximately $235,000.

According to the forest preserves, workers will remove a large number of trees from the Portwine, Dam #1 Woods and Willow-Sanders properties, which stretch from Willow Road in the south to Lake-Cook Road in the north.
