Brussels sprouts nearly got the best of Michael Pennisi, one of the four finalists — and ultimate winner — in the Cook of the Week Challenge. "I didn't like them as a kid and the few times I've made them as an adult I always found myself thinking Why I am eating these when I can actually eat whatever I want?,'" the physics teacher from Carpentersville said, reflecting on one of the secret ingredients he and the other cooks had to use during the live cook-off Thursday that capped the elimination-style competition.

When Carpentersville resident and Schaumburg High School teacher Michael Pennisi was announced as the winner of the Daily Herald's second annual Cook of the Year contest Thursday night, 300 pairs of eyes rapidly searched the ballroom for the man of the hour. After a moment, he ran up from a crowd, waving his arms. "I'm kind of just stunned right now!" was Pennisi's first reaction. "This is way cool!"

After 12 weeks of recipe match-ups, the field of competitor has been whittled down to four. The four finalists in the Cook of the Week Challenge will compete Nov. 1 in a live cook-off. The cooks will have one hour to prepare a meal using the secret ingredients. A panel of six culinary experts will rate the recipes and the winner will be named 2012 Cook of the Year.
