    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

    Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
    Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

    Barrington’s Coll-Parekh still in front draw May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    George Coll and Varun Parekh took a giant stride toward their intended destination in the boys tennis state tournament Thursday. The Barrington duo won their first three doubles matches on their home courts to stay alive in the front draw and gain a spot in the fourth round of championship bracket play Friday morning. The Mid-Suburban League champs will meet 3-4 seed New Trier (Alex Mang-Arthur Ozga) at 9 a.m. today in Buffalo Grove in what promises to be an entertaining and exciting second day of the 97th state series. Tournament favorites Hinsdale Central and New Trier lead the pack in the team race with 24 and 22 points, respectively, with Lake Forest a surprise at 22 points. Oak Park-River Forest (20) and Stevenson (17) are right there in the team race, too.

    The Schaumburg Palatine High School District board of education honored three students at a meeting Thursday for being named Golden Apple Scholars. The three students will each attend an Illinois university in the fall and receive thousands of dollars in scholarships, along with mentoring and support as they pursue their degrees in education. The winners are Lizbeth Arreola, Palatine High School; Maya Lane, Conant High School; and Jae Eun Shin, Conant High School.

    The scene on the pitch at Schaumburg told the story. Saxons players were celebrating all around freshman Sarah Kozlowski, while Conant's players were staring in disbelief. After six long years, Schaumburg's wait was over. Kozlowski's goal in the 89th minute beat the Cougars 2-1 Wednesday night, sending the Saxons into their own sectional final Friday night against St. Charles North. The defeat ended a memorable run for the Conant seniors, who lifted two state trophies in their four years and were clearly one of the state's top programs.

    Mid-Suburban League softball champion Conant opened the state tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Hoffman Estates in the Hawks' Class 4A regional semifinal. Seeded No. 1 in the Barrington sectional, the Cougars (30-3) advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. regional title game against the winner of today's semifinal between No. 8 Hersey and No. 9 Palatine.Senior Briana Cavin (27-2) threw a 6-hitter with 9 strikeouts and she went 3-for-4 with 1 run. Shortstop Allie Bauch was also 3-for-4 with a run teammates while Miranda Cavin, Kim Jacobson, Sarah Thompson, Megan Reff and Barb Linderman had the RBI for Conant. Plus other regional semifinals including softball teams from the northwest suburbs.

    It's the latest thing and it's coming to your school. End-of-year videos, bursting with school spirit and featuring hundreds of students. "It was awesome how so many students were involved," said Shayne Bullen, assistant principal at Schaumburg High School. "You come away from it just inspired."

    Within a matter of months, students at Conant High School successfully converted a gasoline go-cart into an award-winning electric vehicle. Members of the school's Engineering and Electronics Club attended a competition in Michigan won two first place trophies for onboard electronics and presentation. “I think they set the bar extremely high for themselves,” said Peter Goss, applied technology teacher at Conant.

  • Conant success continues May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
    Conant ended its most successful regular season by splitting a doubleheader with New Trier on Saturday in Hoffman Estates. In a battle between two top-seeded sectional teams, the Cougars (30-3) outlasted the Trevians in Game 1 for a 2-1 victory in nine innings. Junior Miranda Cavin singled, went to second on Kim Jacobson's sacrifice and eventually scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Plus other softball games from the northwest suburbs.

     
  • Big win for Schaumburg’s Lin May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
    Schaumburg freshman Vincent Lin booked his place in the upcoming boys tennis state tournament by delivering a 3-set victory over Glenbrook South sophomore Ben Hoogland 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to capture the Schaumburg sectional singles title Saturday. Lin also helped lead his team to an impressive third-place finish in the team race behind perenial powers Glenbrook South and North. The Titans, behind the superb doubles team of Michael Sellitto and Michael Levin and its No. 2 team of Luke McCanna and Will Lyon, outscored its Central Suburba League rival Glenbrook North 25-19 to win the team battle. The Saxons finished with 18 points, 4 more than Conant. Barrington, which qualified its No. 1 doubles team (George Coll-Varun Parekh), finished fifth overall with 12 overall points.
