Rose kicks St. Charles N. past Conant in 2 OTs May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
If all she had done on Tuesday night was defend, Kenzie Rose’s contributions for St. Charles North’s girls soccer team would have been immense. But Rose did more than operate as a shutdown defender for 100 minutes of play for the North Stars in their Class 3A Hoffman Estates sectional semifinal against Conant. When 5:45 left in the second overtime, Rose moved forward for an Alyssa Brandt corner kick, got one shot away that was blocked, then shot again from close range and scored the only goal of the match.

Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

Lin netted a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory over Mid-Suburban League foe Mack Galvin (28-5) to win the singles crown at the Glenbrook North boys tennis sectional. Lin's sparkling performance sent him to his second consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Galvin, a freshman at Rolling Meadows, earned his first state experience. The host Spartans accrued 17 points to win the team trophy, outscoring Glenbrook South (11), Schaumburg (10) and MSL East champion Rolling Meadows (8).

Stevenson digs deep, knocks Conant from state tourney May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Host Stevenson was rolling in the deep end of the pool Friday night in the second half of the Patriots' boys state water polo state quarterfinal game against Conant. The Cougars proved that their sparkling 30-3 record heading into the state tournament was for real as they led 2-1 after one quarter before the Pats rallied back to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The very close and evenly matched back-and-forth battle wound up being tied at 6-6 on a breakaway goal by Conant's Jon Burke with 4:12 left in the third quarter. But Stevenson (22-9-1) and goalie Rob O'Brien played shutout defense the rest of the way as 5 goals by junior Mitchell Sokolsky paved the way to a 9-6 Patriots victory.

Big defensive finish key for Conant May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant, the top seed in the Fremd boys water polo sectional, was getting all it wanted from Hoffman Estates on Saturday afternoon. The No. 3 seed Hawks, after springing an upset on No. 2 Fremd the previous night, were within 7-5 late in the third quarter. It seemed like Hoffman Estates had every chance to stay in the game, and perhaps even pull a stunner. Conant had other ideas. Senior Jon Burke scored on a man-up possession at the end of the third quarter, and the Cougars didn't allow another goal the rest of the way in an 11-5 victory. Conant (30-3) earned its first state tournament trip since 2007 and will face Stevenson at 7 p.m. Friday in the Elite Eight at Stevenson.

"First is first," said Patton, who was second in the state last year. "That was the goal, and I got it."
