    Stevenson graduate Maggie Brennolt and the rest of her Northeastern hockey teammates almost got the thrill of a lifetime: a game outdoors at Fenway Park. A snowstorm in Boston put the game against Harvard on ice, but at least the Huskies got a practice in at the historic stadium.

    Eleven returning Olympians are on the roster for the womenís hockey team that will represent the United States at Sochi. The roster, which includes 2009 Stevenson High School graduate and Buffalo Grove native Megan Bozek, was announced during the break between periods of the NHLís Winter Classic. Bozek, a defenseman, won two NCAA hockey championships with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and will play in her first Olympic games.

  • DePaulís January earns Big East hoops honor Dec 23, 2013 4:37 PM
    DePaul freshman guard Jessica January was named the Big East Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. The Richfield, Minn. native, averaged 10.0 points per game in DePaulís four wins last week. January scored 12 points in victories over Pittsburgh and Louisiana-Monroe. The freshman had a career-day against ULM and recorded a team-best and career-high eight rebounds. She also added a season-high four steals and two, 3-pointers. January averaged 23.0 minutes, shot .378 (14-of-37) from the floor and added 4.5 rebounds per game. One of the first options off the bench for the Blue Demons, January helped DePaul to the Duel in the Desert title with wins of Pittsburgh, Washington and ULM. The Blue Demons also defeated Dartmouth last week. St. Johnís guard, Aliyyah Handford was named the leagueís Player of the Week.

  • Harperís Dabrowski nets All-American Honor Dec 19, 2013 9:39 PM
    After being named to the North Central Community College Conference all-academic team for a second straight season following a standout volleyball performance this fall, Harperís Veronica Dabrowski has added to her list of honors. Already chosen all-Region and first-team all-conference, Dabrowski (Rolling Meadows) can add NJCAA first team All-American to her resume. She becomes the 13th Harper player to earn that distinction in that last 12 years. Dabrowski had 475 kills, putting her fourth in the nation in that category. She now ranks second on Harperís all-time kills list with 828, behind only Christy Lima (860). The N4C also had three All-American representatives from Madison Area Technical College, which won the NJCAA Division III national championship.

    Freshman Stephanie Mavunga had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 14 North Carolina to a 74-66 victory over No. 10 South Carolina on Wednesday night, ending the Gamecocks perfect start.

    Odyssey Sims scored 39 points, including six the final minute, and No. 9 Baylor held off Mississippi 87-80 on Wednesday night to extend its home winning streak to 66 games.

    Aaryn Ellenberg scored 23 points and No. 20 Oklahoma beat Fairfield 79-51 on Wednesday night. The start of the game was delayed 45 minutes as Oklahoma was stuck in traffic coming up from New York City. It took the Sooners three hours to get to the game from their Times Square hotel 60 miles away.

     
  • Sharp-shooting Rogowski leads DePaul's attack Dec 13, 2013 9:50 PM
    This is the Megan Rogowski everyone at Hersey High School remembers. The 5-foot-9 Rogowski came off the bench for the Blue Demons as a freshman and sophomore, but now she's starting at off-guard and putting the ball in the basket with the kind of success she had when she scored a school-record 2,365 points at Hersey, where she holds 11 school records.
