Westminster Christian nails down 1st regional title May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been a big week for the Westminster Christian softball team. On Tuesday, the Warriors won a regional game for the first time in program history. On Saturday, they did themselves one better, claiming the program's first regional championship — and they did it at Jockey Field in East Dundee, Westminster's home field. Becca Fugiel had 3 hits including a double, triple and 3 RBI and her sister Rachel scattered 7 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks as the Warriors defeated Christian Liberty 7-4 in a Class 1A regional title game.

Colbert pitches Christian Liberty to regional title May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Dave Colbert and Christian Liberty came up with a couple of firsts Saturday at the Class 1A regional final at Morgan Park Academy in Chicago. Colbert, a senior, threw his first complete game to lead the Chargers to the program's first baseball regional title with a 5-0 masterpiece over Morgan Park Academy. Christian Liberty (13-12) will meet Grant Park on Wednesday in the sectional semifinals at Gardner-South Wilmington.

Valles tosses shutout as Maine West splits with Schaumburg May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Ariel Valles pitched her final regular-season game on the varsity diamond where she has spent most of her high school softball career. The Maine West senior made it a game to remember by tossing a 5-0 shutout over visiting Schaumburg on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader in Des Plaines. The Saxons took Game 2 behind a 7-hitter from sophomore Shannon Felde.

Hedstrom pitches Palatine to victory May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Palatine senior ace Megan Hedstrom threw a 4-hitter with 4 strikeouts as the Pirates edged host Prospect 3-2 in the Mid-Suburban League third-place crossover on Wednesday. Palatine (17-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jamie Haze (2-for-4, RBI) singled to score Lauren Logan. The Knights (8-19) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Rachel Trebswether led off with a triple to right center and scored on Michele Molini's one-out single to right.

Big rally lifts Schaumburg May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Trailing 8-2 after five innings, Schaumburg's softball team scored 9 runs in the top of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 victory over visiting Conant in the Mid-Suburban League game. Senior Hannah Kerr (6-2) earned the win for the Saxons, who improved to 16-8 and 8-7.

Fremd's softball team remained right on the heels of first-place Barrington with a 10-3 victory at Schaumburg. Senior ace Ashlynne Schwantz (17-3) won her 14th straight game with 1 strikeout and 1 walk as the Vikings improved to 13-1, 1 game behind Barrington in the competitive Mid-Suburban West. The game was tied at 3-3 after four innings when Fremd (18-6) scored 3 times in the fifth and added 4 more in the seventh.

Dolan powers Meadows to key victory May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Senior catcher Mike Dolan homered, finishing with 3 hits and 5 RBI to help Rolling Meadows top visiting Barrington 10-4 on Thursday in what turns out to be a preview of next week's Mid-Suburban League championship game. The victory improved the Mustangs' record to 12-1 in the MSL East, 2 games ahead of Elk Grove with one league game left for both teams.

Barton, BG seniors enjoy big day May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
It was Senior Day for Buffalo Grove's softball team on Wednesday. Senior third baseman Erin Barton couldn't have begun the celebration of her own day any better. Barton belted a 3-run homer in the first inning and that proved plenty for sophomore ace Julia Camardo, who went on to shut out visiting Wheeling 5-0. Camardo (11-6) tossed a 1-hitter for the Bison (12-7) who improved to 8-4 in the Mid-Suburban East, two games in front of Elk Grove (7-7).

Historic win for Christian Liberty May 3, 2013 12:00 AM
Christian Liberty Academy lives to play another day. The No. 4-seeded Chargers overwhelmed No. 5 Chicago Math and Science Academy 4-0 Friday afternoon in Arlington Heights to capture the first girls soccer postseason victory in program history, and in doing so, advance into the second round of the Class 1A state playoffs. Next up for coach Claire Comerouski's club is No. 1 seed Willows Academy on Tuesday afternoon at North Shore Country Day.

Senior Ashlynne Schwantz and sophomore Joanna Josten combined for a 12-1 Mid-Suburban League victory over host Hoffman Estates in five innings. Winning pitcher Schwantz (9-3) struck out three in the first two innings and Josten recorded 4 strikeouts in the final three innings. Leigh Farina and Tracy Welninski had homers for Fremd (10-6, 5-1) while Mandi Matsumoto tripled. Teammates Kristine Herdegen and Michelle Mazur each doubled and freshman Alysia Garcia was 2-for-3.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Buffalo Grove's softball team chipped away at the deficit and scored its final 3 runs in the top of the seventh to post an 8-6 victory over host Schaumburg. The big comeback allowed the Bison (10-5, 4-2) to retain first place in the Mid-Suburban East as they improved to 10-5 and 5-2 despite being outhit 14-8. Sophomore Julia Camardo (8-4) earned the win and also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Tori Walzak's two-out double scored Lauren Logan in the top of the eighth inning and that proved to be the difference for Palatine's softball team which edged host Conant 4-3 on Monday in Hoffman Estates. After a leadoff single by Elisa Ambrose in the bottom of the eighth, Pirates senior ace Megan Hedstrom retired the next three batters, including a strikeout to end the game.Palatine improved to 6-4 and 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban West while Conant is 6-3 and 2-1.
