    Patience helped Christian Liberty Academy prevail against Harvest Christian in a Northeast Athletic Conference boys basketball matchup on Friday night in Arlington Heights. The Chargers trailed 21-6 at one point early in the second quarter and came up empty through the first half in a usual team strength, 3-pointers. But Christian Liberty hit five 3s in the second half and also made 9 for 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull out a 55-51 victory.

    Christian Liberty Academy’s Ben Daniel does not want to be a watchmaker. But he still has an excellent concept of time. Daniel’s putback just before the final horn sounded helped lift the Chargers past Alden-Hebron 44-42 Friday in Arlington Heights in a Northeastern Athletic Conference boys basketball matchup. “At the end of the game, everyone thinks there is less time left than there really is,” said Daniel, a three-year starter for CLA who finished with 10 points. “So I just charged in for the rebound. I saw it come off the rim and I just put it in.”

    Mikala Pipping played forward in Christian Liberty’s first nine games this season. In the last two, the senior from Lake Zurich moved to guard,and it has only been forward progress. Pipping scored a career-high 15 points with three 3-pointers in Tuesday’s 37-33 win over Willows Academy and came back on Thursday night to score 14 points with two clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped the Chargers seal a 40-32 nonconference victory over visiting Hiawatha.

    Finally, some breathing room for Palatine. The Pirates wrapped up a 3-1 performance in York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic on Tuesday with a 66-50 victory over Elk Grove. Each of Palatine’s three previous tournament games had been decided by a point. Balanced scoring and an efficient offensive effort were among the keys for Palatine (9-4). Chris Macahon led the way with a game-high 19 points, finishing 7-for-11 from the field with five 3s and 4 steals.

    Phil and Ann Kwiatkowski got one of the best Christmas presents parents with a child in the military can receive. Their oldest son Stephen ended his four-year hitch in the U.S. Marine Corps after two tours in Afghanistan and is back home in Palatine. "It's the only gift any of us need," Phil Kwiatkowski said. Stephen was feted at his alma mater, Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights.

    Dan Hadler finished with a game-high 21 points to help Elk Grove improve to 2-1 in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball after a 54-50 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove on Friday. Buffalo Grove led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-11. Senior Depin Patel finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Grenadiers. Collin Calcagno paced the Bison with 15 points and Colin Dekorski finished with 13.

The host Knights earned a 52-36 victory over the Bison on Friday, claiming their third straight victory and remaining perfect in the Mid-Suburban East at 2-0. Kyle Beyak (14 points), Patryk Niemiec (10 points, 8 rebounds) and Grant Miller (8 points, 4 assists) led a balanced scoring attack for the Knights.
