    Barrington junior Keenan Dolezal threw her eighth shutout of the season on Wednesday as the Fillies edged visiting Elk Grove 1-0 in the Mid-Suburban League second-place softball crossover. The right-hander (22-9) tossed a 5-hitter with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks, retiring nine of the final 10 batters she faced.

    Members of the Prairie Brass Band will be rehearsing before a concert next weekend. They rehearse in the 2nd floor music room. Our interest would be in the conductor (who also serves as music director at Christian Liberty) Peter Held, and the principal tenor horn player, Mary Gingrich, who also is in the running as the new conductor of the band.

    Ethan Bloom hit a 3-run homer in the first inning against Libertyville and the host Hawks were able to stay in front and claim a 5-4 victory in nonconference baseball Saturday. Matt Roesch also doubled and scored in the first inning for Hoffman Estates (9-13-1).

    One day, Cook of the Week Tim Cruz may work as an IT coordinator by day and at night, run his own cafe. The Des Plaines teen loves cooking just as much as he loves using technology and hopes to find a way to integrate the two. For now, Tim cooks for his parents and classmates, who get to sample the lunches he brings, far from peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and an apple. Tim recalls being 12 and his parents giving him the freedom to make his own meals. “It's really cool they support me and my passion for cooking,” he said.

The Knights first rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and tie up their game against visiting Palatine. That set the stage for Pat Donohue, who hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish a 7-5 Knights triumph.

    Schaumburg’s softball team moved into a first-place tie with Conant (9-0, 6-0) in the Mid-Suburban West with its 16-2 five-inning victory at Palatine on Friday. The Saxons (13-4, 6-0) received a 4-hitter from junior Shannon Felde (6-1), who struck out six while junior shortstop Elaine Walker helped ignite the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and 2 RBI. Classmate Roxanne Kakareka also belted a homer for Saxons and collected 4 RBI.

Ethan Bloom tossed a complete-game victory for the Hawks, allowing 9 hits but only 1 earned run with 3 strikeouts.
