Pat Quinn signed legislation Sautrday doubling the maximum prison term for people who use social media and text messaging to organize violent “flash mobs” like those that have occurred on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue and in other tourist areas. The legislation, which increases the maximum prison sentence to six years, was in direct response to recent incidents in downtown Chicago that left business owners fearful that tourists and other visitors would be scared off.

    Damien Brunner and Brendan Smith scored in the second period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Blackhawks 4-1 Saturday in Game 2 to even their Western Conference semifinal series. It was a strong response by the Red Wings after Chicago handled them easily in the series opener, 4-1. Just as the Blackhawks did in Game 1, Detroit took control in the second period and put the game away in the third.

The Shedd's new outdoor hands-on "Stingray Touch" exhibit debuts Friday, May 17. "Stingrays are very friendly, gentle animals," said Elise Waugh, coordinator of communications and public relations for the Shedd Aquarium.

    Visitors to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium will be getting up close and personal with stingrays. The aquarium's "Stingray Touch" exhibit opens Friday. Visitors will be able to feel the skin of about 40 cownose and yellow rays that will be on display. The rays, some with three-foot wide wingspans, will be exhibited in a 20,000-gallon pool on the aquarium's south terrace.
