  • Richter, Drain bring the pain as PR stops Grant May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Mighty Maddie Drain delivered pain. Her Prairie Ridge softball teammate Marissa Richter provided a different kind of hurt an earlier inning. Leading off the bottom of the second inning of Tuesday’s Class 4A Grant regional semifinal, the 6-foot-2 Drain smacked a line drive that caught Grant pitcher Caitlyn Moran flush on the right thigh. The softball was sure to leave a mark of black-and-blue variety. For Moran, her pain wasn’t season-ending. When approached by the home-plate umpire to see if she was OK, the wounded ace, determined to keep playing, gave him a thumbs-up. In the first inning, Richter had touched Moran for a 3-run homer, propelling regional top seed Prairie Ridge to a 4-0 over No. 4 Grant in Fox Lake.

  • Jacobs shuts out Crystal Lake South May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
It wasn't evident through the first five innings, but the Jacobs softball team had a little chip on its shoulder in regards to its No. 5 regional seed. But when it came off in the final two innings, Courtney Cotugno and Sarah Murray were personally responsible for not only doing so, but for helping Jacobs to play another game. Cotugno, who was called out at second on a controversial call in the fourth, redeemed herself in the sixth by singling home Murray, who doubled earlier in the inning, for the first Jacobs run in a 5-0 win over No. 4 Crystal Lake South in a Class 4A Jacobs regional play-in game in Crystal Lake Monday.

  • Sporting All The Benefits May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Do you think sports are all fun and games? While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Although some may argue participating in a sport is a distraction and a time consuming activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares otherwise. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With obesity becoming such a prevalent issue, it is no fallacy that children need to increase their physical activity, and what better way to start then by participating in a sport.
