  Matt Ryan can throw curve balls, and so can life. Earlier this spring, life threw Ryan a curve ball that he definitely wasn't expecting. Ryan entered his senior year at Carmel expecting to be the baseball team's ace. He won 6 games on the mound last season as a junior with 50 strikeouts and a 1.94 earned run average. He signed to play college ball with St. Louis University over the off-season and he was ready to finish out his prep career with a bang. At 4-0, which includes a recent win over powerhouse Joliet Catholic, Ryan is certainly on his way. But his storybook swan song comes only after a humbling and delayed start.
  

   

• Dreschler, Reiser power Grant May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
  Same ol', same ol' for Grant's softball team. Bri Dreschler homered, and the Bulldogs won. Grant got 2-run homers from Jamie Reiser in the first inning and Dreschler in the fourth en route to a 6-1 win over host Antioch on Wednesday. Dreschler's home run was her fourth of the season, all in her last four games. The victory hiked Grant's record to 11-6 and 6-1 in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division.
  

   

• VH wins NSC Prairie, awaits Lake opponent May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
  Getting to the North Suburban Championship game never gets old. Vernon Hills' girls soccer team has made it there before — they'll be there once again this spring. But the road for the Cougars the season turned out to be unique. Vernon Hills wrapped up an unbeaten run against Prairie Division goes by beating host Antioch 6-0 Wednesday. They'd previously beaten quality teams from Lakes, Grant and Antioch (8-6-1, 4-2) and also got past Wauconda.
  

   

• Behan’s bomb lifts Carmel Apr 30, 2013 12:00 AM
  Stevenson's softball field had yielded just two over-the-fence home runs before this season. On Tuesday, Carmel Catholic's Jenny Behan become the third player to pull off the feat this season. "That's 3 in like in 2½ weeks," said Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs, whose own Abby O'Connor on Saturday became the first player ever to hit two over-the-fence homers (both this year) at the Patriots' field. Behan's shot, which cleared the 255-feet sign in center field, helped lift Carmel to a 14-10 win in a nonconference slugfest that featured 26 hits.
