  • Big breakthrough for Vernon Hills Feb 21, 2015 10:19 PM
From hugs to heartbreak, the gamut of emotions were on their usual display Saturday afternoon in the Vernon Hills boys swimming sectional meet. As far as the hugs, there were plenty to go around, especially after Vernon Hills’ junior Brian Rabinowitz had just finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and qualified for next weekend’s state meet at New Trier. “I just missed in the previous three events today, but this definitely makes up for it,” said Rabinowitz, who swam a 53.50. “It feels great to finally end the drought. I was a little worried coming in, but I just trusted my training. I’d love to get a 53 or lower (at state).” The drought Rabinowitz mentioned refers to a four-year absence since Vernon Hills has had a state qualifier in boys swimming.

Joey Gunther was a smashing success Friday. The Libertyville senior advanced to the 160-pound state wrestling final after outlasting Trace Carello of Marmion Academy in a marathon semifinal in Champaign. The top-seeded Gunther won 3-2 when he was awarded the 1-point winner as Carello (20-4) was unable to break away from an unyielding hold. “It’s wasn’t at all pretty, but as I said after my quarterfinal this morning, it’s not about style points down here,” said Gunther (36-1). Assured of a state medal, Gunther next tried to become the fourth state champ in Libertyville history. He’ll meet Matthew Rundell (32-3) of Oak Park-River Forest in the title bout on Day 3 of the state tournament.

  • Callahan shoots Buffalo Grove past Stevenson Feb 20, 2015 11:37 PM
As soon as Buffalo Grove’s girls basketball season ends, Maddy Callahan will have her long-awaited ACL surgery. “It’s just partially torn,” the 5-foot-8 senior guard, who wears a cumbersome brace on her left knee, said with a shrug. Callahan is in no hurry to stop playing ball, as evident by the 24 points, including six 3-pointers, that she poured in during fifth-seeded Buffalo Grove’s thrilling, 59-55 win over No. 4 Stevenson in the Class 4A Carmel Catholic regional final Friday night. The victory earned Buffalo Grove (21-10) a berth in Monday’s 7 p.m. Palatine sectional semifinal against fellow Mid-Suburban League member Fremd (24-4), which is the No. 1 seed.

Staying upbeat during a 2-25 season isn’t easy. Last week, the Mustangs made their first trip to Loyola, to watch another former Mundelein star, Sean O’Brien, a sophomore at Southern Illinois.

  • Mundelein stays focused, prevails at Carmel Feb 16, 2015 10:42 PM
Home-team fans tend to quiet down to a whisper when their own players are shooting free throws. They think that they’re doing the shooter a favor, helping with his or her concentration. Then, when the road team shoots free throws, the home fans go crazy and make as much noise as possible. They think they’re being a distraction. Well, the Mundelein girls basketball team turned this bit of conventional wisdom on its head on Monday night. In a raucous environment at Carmel in a Class 4A regional opener, the Mustangs weren’t distracted in the least by loud, screaming fans for the home team. It was like they barely noticed the noise as they calmly hit 13 of 16 fourth-quarter free throws to ice a 51-45 victory over Carmel.
