    As the old saying goes, “it’s the little things that count.” That details-first approach to practice and meets has really helped the Fremd girls cross country team, and the determined Vikings ran to the championship of the 17-team Warren Invitational Saturday morning by a solid 63-88 count to top the host Blue Devils. Not only was Saturday a great day for Fremd as a team, but Ayako Higuchi set a record on the 2.95-mile course on the grounds of the high school with a winning time of 17:12.16.

    Carmel 41, Marian Catholic 0: Michael Huiras threw 3 touchdown passes and ran for a pair of short scores, as the visiting Corsairs cruised in their East Suburban Catholic Conference road game. Carmel (2-2, 1-1) led 14-0 at halftime and 34-0 after three quarters. Carmel tight end Noah Turner caught 62- and 55-yard TD passes from Huiras. Rondel Jamison scored on a 50-yard screen and added a 20-yard touchdown run. Dan Huiras and Adam Roessler had interceptions for Carmel.

    Girls golf Carmel d. Vernon Hills: At Heather Ridge, the undefeated Corsairs shot a 173 to win for the second day in a row on the nine-hole layout, as Alexa Amato’s 40 led the way. Carmel (7-0) also counted Kyla Ryan’s 44, Erin Kehoe’s 44 and Danielle Savovich’s 45. Vernon Hills (192) was led by Faith Jung’s 45. Stevenson d. Deerfield: At Deerfield Golf Club, Alexia Fidman captured medalist honors with a 43, and the Patriots (181) defeated the Warriors (196). Myra Peterson and Olivia Hancock each shot a 45 for Stevenson. Grayslake d. Lakes: At Antioch Golf Course, Ireland Dunne shot a 44 to earn medalist honors and lead Grayslake’s co-op team (195) past the host Eagles (295). Dhani McDowell and Kara Ahlemeyer added a 48 and 49, respectively, while Kim Balling carded a 52. McHenry d. Grant: Brianna Burgeson shot a 48 for the Bulldogs (212) in their loss to the Warriors (193). Harvard d. Antioch: Hannah Cook shot a 55 for the Sequoits (261) in their loss to Harvard (213).

    Although Bill McNamara missed the “big game” in person, he found it just as much fun to watch on tape. McNamara is the head football coach at Stevenson. His team was busy playing a game against Warren last week at the same time his son Connor, the starting quarterback at Vernon Hills, was taking on North Chicago. The younger McNamara wound up taking part in a school-record 7 touchdowns in a 64-28 win. He rushed for 6 scores and threw for another.

    Sophomore Simone Mikaelian earned medalist honors with a 37, and Libertyville’s girls golf team prevailed over host Stevenson at Crane’s Landing to take sole possession of first place in the North Suburban Conference on Wednesday.

    Grace Schofield’s big night helped lift Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team to a thrilling, three-set victory Wednesday. Schofield pounded 15 kills and served 6 aces, as the Corsairs rallied to beat host Glenbrook North 20-25, 25-19, 25-19 in nonconference action. Carmel (9-1) also got 7 kills and 16 assists from Morgan Meade, 4 kills and 13 assists from Grace Butler and 25 digs from Sierra Kepski. Taylor Luhr contributed 6 blocks, and Cate Halverson chipped in 3 kills for the Corsairs. Lake Forest d. Mundelein: The Scouts won 25-21, 25-14 to improve to 5-6 and 2-1 in the North Suburban Lake Division. Lake Forest was led by the setting of sophomore Ashley Amos (42 of 45, 23 assists, 1 kill, 1 ace, 3 service points), junior Emma Butler (8 kills), senior Jenna Dethlefsen (8 kills), sophomore Ashley Williams (7 kills, 1 ace, 5 service points) and the overall play of defensive specialist Mari Danneker (2.25 serve receive average on a 3 point scale, 1 ace and 10 total service points). Wauconda d. Antioch: Sara Sexton slammed 9 kills, LeAnne Sakowicz tallied 8 kills, 12 assists, 4 digs and 2 aces, and the Bulldogs won 25-22, 25-20 in North Suburban Prairie play. Wauconda (12-4, 2-0) also received 2 aces and 6 digs from Ashley Anderson. Stevenson d. Warren: The Patriots rallied for a 13-25, 25-23, 25-22 win in North Suburban Lake action. “Both teams battled pretty much point to point,” Warren coach Julie Filippo said. Warren (10-5, 2-1) was paced by Jenna Walczak (10 kills 7 digs), Kim Hengesh (7 kills, 3 blocks), Lauren Frericks (6 kills, 48-of-49 setting, 10 assists), Nicole Berzin (40-of-44 setting, 16 assists) and Lindsey Biedron (4 kills, 9 digs). Vernon Hills d. North Chicago: The Cougars cruised in the North Suburban Prairie match, winning 25-3, 25-5.

    Girls golf Carmel d. Highland Park: At Countryside, the host Corsairs remained undefeated by edging the Giants on a fifth-score tiebreaker, as both teams shot a 178 on the par-35 Traditional back nine. The tiebreaker was won by Carmel sophomore Natalie Linquist, who shot a 48. Alexa Amato’s 43 led the way for the Corsairs, who also counted Erin Kehoe’s 44, Kayla Ryan’s 45 and Eva Savovich’s 46. Highland Park’s Kelli Ono was the medalist with a 37. Carmel improved to 5-0, which coach Jill Franz attributes to the depth of her entire team. “We play all six girls, and at any given time we know we can count on all six of them to score for us,” Franz said. “It’s a nice cushion to have as a young team. I’m proud of the girls’ hard work and dedication.” Crystal Lake Central d. Lake Zurich: At Village Green, the visiting Tigers shot a 177 to down the Bears (217). Aine Mattera’s 43 paced Lake Zurich.

    Girls volleyball Carmel d. Mundelein: Carmel rolled to a 25-9, 25-12 sweep of Mundelein in girls volleyball on Monday night. Carmel got 7 kills from Grace Schofield and 6 kills and 10 assists from Morgan Meade. Lake Zurich d. Zion-Benton: Lake Zurich swept Zion-Benton, 25-16, 26-24. Lexi Gora led the Bears with 10 kills and Mickenzie Andrews added 9 kills and 14 digs. Setter Kylie Dykgraff finished with 29 assists for Lake Zurich. McHenry d. Grant: McHenry was pushed to three games before pulling out a 25-18, 15-25, 25-19 win over Grant. Grant got a team-high 11 kills out of Kylie Mueller. She also had 4 aces and 5 digs. Megan Gebauer and Hannah Johnson each added 4 kills for the Bulldogs while Kate Kiser and Kelli Varney finished with 12 and 11 assists respectively. Boys cross country Vernon Hills d. Round Lake: At Deerpath Park, Vernon Hills boasted the top five finishers in a 15-48 victory over Round Lake. Tyler Smith of Vernon Hills placed first with a 16:30.4. Andrew Maskevich was Round Lake’s top finisher. He took sixth with a 17:06.2. Grant wins: At Fox River Park, Grant got wins over Antioch (27-29) and Wauconda (17-38). Frank Cardy of Grant took first place with a 17:22. Girls cross country Grant dominates: At Fox River Park, Grant took the top four places in wins over Antioch (17-44) and Wauconda (15-50). Brooke Drabek of Grant took first place (20:48) and was followed closely behind by teammate Madison Romig (20:49). Boys golf Vernon Hills wins at Merit: At the Merit Club, Vernon Hills won the six-team Warren Invite with a 321. Justin Park of Vernon Hills finished in second place with a 77. Warren’s Jack Hansen was the medalist with a 76, marking the third year in a row that Hansen has won this tournament. Warren took second place with a 324. Lake Forest d. Stevenson: At Knollwood Country Club, Lake Forest edged Stevenson, 154-155. Luke Feder of Stevenson was the medalist. He finished with a 37. Grant gets third: At Oak Grove, Grant finished behind Johnsburg (178) and Harvard (183). The Bulldogs totaled 200. Joey Paret had Grant’s best score of the day with a 48. Girls golf Lake Zurich d. Grant: Aine Mattera led Lake Zurich to a 205-244 victory over Grant. Mattera had a 43. Freshman Maddy Lantz led Grant with a 55. Stevenson d. Lake Forest: Stevenson moved to 5-0 in the North Suburban with a 170-186 win over Lake Forest. Surya Vijayasankar led Stevenson with a 40 while teammate Myra Peterson finished with a 41. Girls tennis Carmel d. Libertyville: Carmel edged Libertyville 5-4 thanks in part to a straight-set victory in the No. 1 singles match by Bri Minor. Minor defeated Halle Roach of Libertyville, 6-0, 6-1. Carmel’s No. 1 doubles team also won in straight sets. Christina Rao and Maddy O’Donnell defeated Libertyville’s Dani Blaser and Callie Klein, 6-0, 6-4.

    A mere couple of miles from the site of one of its most memorable drives in team history, Carmel Catholic returned to Chicago’s South Side for a football game Saturday. The Corsairs manufactured a vintage, clock-consuming sequence that conjured up memories of old, great Carmel teams. And when nose guard Mark Curran pounced on a fumble and recovered it late in the game to all but secure a 20-13 win over Phillips on the artificial turf at Mandrake Park, the Corsairs basked in the sun and rejoiced like they hadn’t in a long time.

    Girls volleyball Carmel d. Lakes: Grace Schofield slammed 8 kills, as the Corsairs won 25-19, 25-21 in nonconference action. Carmel (3-0) also received strong contributions from Grace Butler (6 kills, 11 assists, 7 digs), Cate Halverson (3 kills, 3 blocks), Sierra Kepski (12 digs), Taylor Luhr (4 kills), Morgan Meade (4 kills, 14 assists, 7 digs) and Elizabeth Tworek (3 aces, 5 digs). Carmel opened up a 20-8 lead in the opening set, but Lakes wouldn’t go down without a fight and made it close. The Eagles’ momentum carried over into the second set and, for the first time this season, Carmel found itself trailing an opponent. “Lakes is a solid team and played some good defense and caused us some problems,” Corsairs coach David Pazely said. “The girls kept their heads and battled back to get the win. Our middles played well tonight and contributed effectively to the offense. Our setters found a good balance to our attack and we were able to get everyone involved.” Katie Billetdeaux had 5 kills and 3 blocks for Lakes. McKenna Lahr had 4 kills and 3 blocks, and Megan Behrendt totaled 3 kills, 3 aces and 5 digs. “We enjoyed playing a competitive match and look forward to seeing Carmel in the Grayslake Central Ram Slam tournament over the weekend,” Lakes coach Kate Cheek said. Libertyville d. Evanston: The Wildcats won 25-14, 25-16 to improve to 7-1, as Alex Basler had 8 kills, while Hannah Zerwas added seven. Erin Dunleavy had 5 kills, while Liz Apgar dished out 12 assists. Morgan O’Brien contributed 14 digs and 3 aces. Glenbrook South d. Stevenson: Jori Radtke’s 8 kills weren’t enough for the Patriots, who fell 25-20, 26-28, 25-16. Isabella Milejczyk added 6 kills for Stevenson (4-3).
