  • Campton Hills leaders want to hire administrator Feb 7, 2013 4:19 PM
    Campton Hills trustees have given the go-ahead in their 2014 budget to have a village administrator. Ideally, they'd like to have a person hired by June, when the 2014 fiscal year starts. In coming months, the village's finance committee will hash out how much can be set aside and if that person is full- or part-time. Village President Patsy Smith has basically worn an administrator's hat for the last 5-plus years.

    A Campton Hills man accused in September 2011 of beating his daughter with a belt has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to four years probation. Mathew Gumbel, 35, had faced a minimum six-year prison term if convicted of aggravated battery of a child.

    Officials representing the Kiva Recovery Center, rejected by Campton Hills trustees, said they plan to take their proposal to the Kane County Board. Kiva had asked to be annexed into the village, which gave trustees the ability to negotiate numerous conditions. "We regret that the majority of the village board was unable to separate fact from fear,” a Kiva attorney said.

    Visitation and funeral services are set Monday and Tuesday for a 2012 Kaneland High School graduate who was killed when his car was hit head on by a Wisconsin woman driving a car reported stolen from Wheaton. Zachary Bingham, 18, of Maple Park, planned to pursue a career in the trades as a welder and was taking classes at Elgin Community College.

The village wants postcards returned by Dec. 15 in preparation for a possible vote on Dec. 17. Opponents still want a referendum on the April ballot, though.

Residents object to the Kiva Recovery Center, saying meth and heroin addicts would pose a security risk, burden the fire department, reduce property values and hurt the village's image. The matter will next move to the village board.

     
  • Voters can decide to elect Fox River & Countryside trustees Nov 3, 2012 8:00 AM
    Taxpayers serviced by the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District have placed a binding referendum on the ballot that calls for direct election of the district's trustees. A vote in favor of the referendum would strip the incoming Kane County Board chairman of the power to appoint the trustees.
