    Kaneland girls track coach Doug Ecker says his team's goal going into a sectional meet is to qualify as many athletes as possible to the state meet. But earning a sectional championship is nice too. The Knights won the Class 2A Burlington Central sectional title Friday night with 83 points. Hampshire was second with 74. Burlington Central took third with 69 points.

    Junior Lauren Stanley had her best outing since taking over the circle for injured senior Lindsay Efflandt, throwing a no-hitter Friday as Cary-Grove's softball team defeated Dundee-Crown 1-0 in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at Cary-Grove. Stanley (7-3) struck out 7 and walked 1 as the Trojans (18-3, 9-2) remained in a first-place tie in the Valley with McHenry and Prairie Ridge. Cary-Grove plays at PR Monday.

  • Burlington Central wins BNC title May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    On Monday, the Burlington Central girls track team tied with Byron for first place at the Big Northern Conference meet. On Thursday at the BNC boys meet at Oregon, the Rockets scored enough points to avoid a tie and claim the conference championship. Burlington Central used first-place finishes from Ryan Olsen in the 400 meters and Lucas Ege in the 300 hurdles to help the point total as the Rockets scored 95 points, barely outdistancing second-place Winnebago, which scored 91.

    The Burlington Central baseball team clinched the outright Big Northern Conference East Division championship with an 8-2 victory at Rockford Christian in six innings Thursday. The BNC East title is the second straight for Central (11-8, 10-2) and the program's fourth in five seasons.

    In years past, while Hampshire's Patti Nihells, one of the longest-tenured area girls track coaches, may not have had the largest teams but she's always had talented individual athletes both on the track and in the field events. This year, Hampshire is enjoying the best of both worlds. The Whip-Purs are fresh off winning the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division team title in only their second year in the conference. Hampshire, which finished third overall in the 14-team FVC meet, will look to continue that season-long success at Friday's Class 2A Burlington Central sectional. At the sectional level, the top two place-finishers in each event and any individual or relay team equaling or surpassing the minimum state-qualifying standard in each event advance to the state finals in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.

    Authorities were called to the 11N300 block of Russell Road in Plato Township at 1:52 p.m. April 28 for a report of shots fired, according to a sheriff's report, No arrests were made. Police found more than 150 shell casings from different types of guns around a small campfire littered with beer cans, the report said.
