    As coach Mike Schmidt was hoping, the Burlington Central Rockets boys track and field team put itself in prime position for big things in the team race Saturday at the IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field. Junior Lucas Ege is seeded second in the 300 hurdles and 110 high hurdles after a relatively stress-free qualifying session.

    There’s nothing like starting the postseason by scoring 4 runs before the other team records an out. The Burlington Central softball team scored quickly and often Tuesday, beating both Sycamore and the weather in the semifinals of the Class 3A Central regional on Rocket Hill. The Rockets (22-9) rapped out 13 hits and sophomore Emily Kisch tossed a 4-hitter in the 12-0 win as top-seeded Central advanced to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship game against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 2 Kaneland and No. 3 Genoa-Kingston.

  • Kaneland runs away with sectional title again May 23, 2014 11:53 PM
    The winning tradition continued for Kaneland on Friday night at the Class 2A Burlington Central boys track and field sectional. The Knights pulled away from the field with 183 team points to capture their sixth straight sectional title. An outstanding performance even by Kaneland’s high standards. The host Rockets finished a distant second with 75.5 points. Kaneland was strong across the board winning 8 of the 18 events and qualifying for the state meet in 7 others.

    Things started out well enough for Burlington Central in its Class 2A girls soccer regional final against DeKalb Friday. Anna McMahon fed Alyssa Messina for a pretty goal in the second minute and the Rockets were flying high. But Central couldn’t score again while Morgan Beaty connected twice to carry the Barbs to the 2-1 victory.

    Jacobs junior Lauren Van Vlierbergen and Cary-Grove junior Morgan Schulz made the most of their opportunities at the Class 3A girls track preliminaries on Friday. On a pleasant spring afternoon at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium, Schulz flashed her speed by qualifying in both the 800 meters and 300 low hurdles. And Van Vlierbergen cruised to qualifying marks in both the 800 and 1,600.

    Brooke Gaylord couldn’t have asked for a better senior day. And the Burlington Central softball team couldn’t have asked for a better game than Thursday’s to carry it into the postseason. Gaylord fired a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk, and she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a booming home run, as the Rockets downed Rock Falls 7-0 in a Big Northern Conference crossover on senior day at Rocket Hill.

    Burlington Central 8, North Boone 5: Andrew Wiss (3-for-4, RBI, 3RS) was a single short of hitting for the cycle in a Big Northern East victory for the Rockets (18-11, 9-3), which clinched a share of the division title with Richmond-Burton.

    Technically, it was a late-season nonconference game, little more than a playoff tuneup. Neither team started its No. 1 pitcher. But it was still Hampshire-Burlington Central, so there was a playoff atmosphere in Hampshire. Central used an 8-run second inning to power its way to the 13-3 win, spoiling Hampshire’s senior day festivities.

    Ryan Sargent tossed a 5-hitter with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts, and Tim Hubner, Matt Kozlak and Brenden Heiss each drove in runs as the Jacobs baseball team defeated Cary-Grove 3-1 on Monday. The victory kept Jacobs (20-11, 13-4), which has never won a title in the Fox Valley Conference, tied for first place in the Valley Division with Huntley with 2 games remaining.

    South Elgin’s push for a title in the Upstate Eight Conference’s Valley Division was dealt a blow Saturday with a pair of 1-run losses at West Chicago. The Storm entered the doubleheader trailing division-leading Waubonsie Valley by a game in the loss column, but they dropped the opener 6-5 when the Wildcats rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Austin Sayre. Nick Menken had the only multihit game for the Storm.
