  • Burlington Central’s Ege wants more Jun 14, 2014 4:58 PM
It takes a lot to satisfy Burlington Central state champion hurdler Lucas Ege. At the boys state track and field meet in Charleston on May 31, The 17-year-old won the title in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in Class 2A record-setting time (37.34). He also finished third in the 110 high hurdles and ran the opening legs for both Burlington Central’s third-place, school record-setting 1,600-meter relay and its fourth-place 400-meter relay.

  • Maisto steps down at Burlington Central Jun 3, 2014 10:15 PM
Wade Maisto might coach softball again, but it won’t be as Burlington Central’s head varsity coach. Just hours before the Rockets lost 8-7 in eight innings to Sterling Tuesday in the Class 3A Marengo sectional semifinals, Maisto submitted his letter of resignation as the program’s head coach.

  • Sterling beats Burlington Central in 8 innings Jun 3, 2014 9:45 PM
Sterling’s softball team sure does know how to come from behind when it plays on Marengo’s field. The last time the Golden Warriors played at Marengo before Tuesday’s Class 3A sectional semifinal against Burlington Central was the 2013 sectional championship game, which they won over host Marengo in walk off fashion. Well, Sterling did it again on Tuesday. Sophomore Abri Hale’s double to the base of the fence with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Nadia Trujillo with the game-winning run as the Warriors defeated Central 8-7 to move on to Saturday’s sectional title game against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Marengo and Belvidere.

  • Sycamore beats Burlington Central in 10th May 31, 2014 5:19 PM
Burlington Central’s Jacob Schutta tied the game with a disputed home run in the top of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon. There was no doubt about Nathaniel Haacker’s game-winning blast for Sycamore. • Burlington Central 3rd in Class 2A May 31, 2014 10:04 PM
During the more than three-hour bus ride to Eastern Illinois University, the members of the Burlington Central track team knew that winning at a trophy at the Class 2A state track and field championships this weekend at O’Brien Field was more than possible. That is, if the Rockets did what they were capable of. The formula was simple. Watch junior Lucas Ege run real fast in his hurdles races and in the two relays and let the chips fall where they may. Of course, Ege had plenty of help too. SIU-Edwardsville-bound senior Matt O’Connor would place second in the 800-meter run to add 8 very valuable points. But even with all of that, it would take a fantastic performance from Ege, O’Connor, Casey Matthews and Kyle Neubauer in the 1,600-meter relay to end the meet to give the Rockets the final push in points they would need.

  • Burlington Central tops Kaneland in 7th May 31, 2014 6:23 PM
In a game riddled by defensive miscues, it was fitting that the winning run scored on an error. Junior Courtni Neubauer was awarded home plate with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when an errant throw went into the dugout Saturday as Burlington Central’s softball team defeated Kaneland 6-5 in the championship game of the Class 3A Burlington Central regional. The regional title is the 17th in program history and puts the Rockets (23-9) opposite Sterling in a 4:30 p.m. Marengo sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

The Rockets (22-9) rapped out 13 hits and sophomore Emily Kisch tossed a 4-hitter in the 12-0 win as top-seeded Central advanced to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship game against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 2 Kaneland and No. 3 Genoa-Kingston.
