  • Burlington Central claims tournament crown again Nov 25, 2014 10:35 PM
After winning the first four games of its own Thanksgiving tournament by an average of 38 points, the Burlington Central girls basketball team relished the opportunity to be pushed a little Tuesday night. And even though the Rockets posted a 16-point win, this one took a little more work than the previous four. Junior Shelby Holt hit for five more 3-pointers in scoring 17 points as Burlington Central played through some adversity for the first time this season in beating Machesney Park Harlem 50-34 to win its second straight tournament championship.

  • Burlington Central rolls to 2 more wins Nov 22, 2014 8:08 PM
Eight continued to be great — and enough — for Burlington Central’s girls basketball team Saturday. Continuing to play without starters Sam Pryor and Sam Cruz, the Rockets showed the depth they still have with a roster of eight instead of 10, rolling to two more wins in their own Thanksgiving tournament. Junior Becca Gerke scored 20 points in a 61-26 win over Woodstock, then junior Shelby Holt hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points in a 68-28 drubbing of Belvidere North.

  • Burlington Central rolls to another win Nov 19, 2014 11:34 PM
While Burlington Central may still be working out a few kinks on offense with its leading scorer Samantha Pryor sidelined to start the season, the Rockets’ defense hasn’t missed a beat. For the second night in a row on Wednesday Central held its opponent scoreless in the first quarter. The Rockets went on to score the first 14 points of the game and cruised to a second straight win, 54-26 over Oak Forest in second round action of the Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Girls volleball: Dixon stuns Burlington Central Nov 4, 2014 10:41 PM
The records were certainly deceiving Tuesday night in Rochelle for the second semifinal of the Class 3A girls volleyball sectional. “Volleyball is a strange game,” Burlington Central coach Marv Leavitt said after Dixon, which entered the match with four more losses than wins, stunned the Rockets — winners of 30-plus matches — in three sets.

Tuesday night, though, will be the first time they have matched wits in the postseason. • Sterling knocks off Burlington Central Nov 1, 2014 8:12 PM
Having possession of the lead or the football did not necessarily equate to having control of a Class 5A first-round playoff game where Burlington Central and visiting Sterling combined for 7 turnovers and four lead changes Saturday afternoon at Rocket Hill. When Trevor Davison wove 11 yards, dived and broke the plane of the goal line with 6:38 to play he put the seventh-seeded Rockets into a 3-point lead and in position for their first postseason victory in eight years. But the 10th-seeded Golden Warriors responded with touchdowns on their final two possessions and advanced with a 31-20 victory.

  • Vernon Hills, Grayslake Central headed to state Nov 1, 2014 7:30 PM
Perhaps it was the cold, the wind, or the flat course that led to the fast first mile pace at the Kaneland sectional. Or maybe it was just the strategy of the two senior brothers from Yorkville. Either way, the fast start led to new personal records for some of the runners, or a learning experience for those who couldn’t adjust to the pace.

  • Kane County launches, plans to expand peer jury program Oct 29, 2014 11:41 PM
Kane County has launched a Peer Jury Program, through which students who commit first-time non-violent offenses are assigned a punishment by other students instead of going before a juvenile court judge.
