    Hampshire boys basketball coach Bob Barnett announced his retirement from coaching Monday afternoon, effective at the end of the season. Barnett, 54, said his decision is not directly related to his health, though he suffered two heart attacks on Nov. 20, 2012. He missed a game last week due to illness.

    Michael Cullen and Eric Barone will both be competing for a state wrestling title Saturday night. The dynamic duo from the Fox Valley Conference each produced yet another masterful performance on Friday. Cullen made it through to his first championship match after three previous trips here yielded three state medals while Barone’s victory over Phyllip DeLoach (39-1) sets up a potentially thrilling 145-pound final with No. 1 Larry Early III (Oak Park-River Forest), who defeated Barone a few weeks ago 3-2.

    Sycamore coach Brett Goff knew his team would have to play a strong defensive game if the Spartans were to upset No. 2 Burlington Central Friday night. Goff’s girls basketball team gave him more than his wildest dreams. Sycamore clamped down on the Rockets like no team has in the past three years and the Spartans pulled off the upset, 37-21, in the championship game of the Class 3A Sycamore regional.

    While tournament favorites Michael Cullen, Eric Barone and Christian Brunner dominated their first-day tournament opponents, the story at the IHSA Class 3A individual state wrestling tournament Thursday still has to be of Gomez, the Cary-Grove senior. The Trojans’ heavyweight did some wrecking business of his own at State Farm Arena, and in doing so has now set up a date with Brian Ditchman (40-3) of Lincoln-Way Central) in one of several key quarterfinal bouts to take place Friday at 11 a.m.

    It may not be March just yet but it sure was madness. For the better part of 30 minutes Wednesday night, Kaneland’s girls basketball team worked the Sycamore gymnasium into a frenzy and had social media abuzz as the Knights looked like they were going to pull off the upset of the season. But high school basketball games are 32 minutes and down the stretch top-seeded and No. 2 ranked Burlington Central used its postseason experience, as well as a sense of urgency the Rockets haven’t had to show in a long time, to survive. Central scored the final 10 points of the game and overcame as much as a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter to slip past the Knights 44-38 and advance to play the host school at 7 p.m. Friday in the championship game of the Class 3A Sycamore regional.

    A funny thing happened as Burlington Central was about to blow Johnsburg out of the gym: the Skyhawks decided to stick around and make things interesting. After trailing by 20 points in the fourth quarter, Johnsburg got within 7 with 21 seconds to play, forcing Central coach Brett Porto to bring his starters back in. The Rockets quickly righted the ship and held on for a 57-48 victory in Big Northern East boys basketball action at Burlington Friday night.

    Burlington Central seniors Alison Colby and Aly DeTamble saved their best for last — well, last on Rocket Hill anyway. Colby scored a career-high 28 points and DeTamble added a career-high 17 on senior night as the Rockets rolled to an 83-40 win over Marengo, wrapping up their third straight undefeated Big Northern East title with their 38th straight division win.

    Burlington Central junior Samantha Pryor had to endure 13 minutes of anxiety Monday night but the milestone finally came. Pryor hit a jumper in the lane with 2:19 to play in the third quarter, which put her over the 1,000-point mark for her career, and helped the Rockets to an eventual 50-31 win over Richmond-Burton on Rocket Hill.

    The Hampshire wrestling team couldn’t overtake Crystal Lake Central for the Whip-Purs’ Class 2A regional title on Saturday but Hampshire did send several wrestlers on to next weekend’s Antioch sectional.
