  • Burlington Central cruises past Sycamore May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Bill Gajewski will be out looking for a new puppy. But his daughter Melanie, Burlington Central’s senior third baseman, will be choosing the breed and the color. A few years ago, Bill made the mistake — or maybe it was incentive — of telling Melanie that if she ever hit a home run in a regional game, he’d buy her a puppy, as he did for Melanie’s older sister Lizzie when she cranked one in a regional game for the Rockets at Kaneland. Now it’s time to pay up, dad. Melanie Gajewski’s home run was the final of three Burlington Central round-trippers in a 7-run third inning Tuesday, which catapulted the Rockets to an 11-1 win in six innings over host Sycamore in Class 3A regional semifinal action.

  • Huntley’s Omo Tseumah wins the high jump Saturday at the Class 3A girls state track and field finals at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Huntley’s Tseumah state high jump champ May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Omo Tseumah took a calculated gamble. But it paid off handsomely for the Huntley senior in her return engagement with Lyons Township sophomore Emma Haugen. Last year at the girls Class 3A state track and field meet, Haugen defeated Tseumah for the championship in the high jump. Tseumah made a bold move as the two dueled once again on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University. "I decided to skip 5-(feet)-5," Tseumah said. The Marquette-bound senior then made her three following heights at 5-6, 5-7 and 5-8.

    Jacobs 3,200 relay team Friday’s fastest May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
The Jacobs 3,200-meter relay team made quite a statement Friday at the Class 3A state girls track and field finals in Charleston. The quartet of Molly Barnes, Tori Tamburrino, Sam Baran and Lauren VanVlierbergen won its heat and clocked the fastest time of all 3A teams at 9:16.19. The Golden Eagles will take a shot at school history in today's finals. No Jacobs girls individual or relay team has won a track state title. LaShawna Canty came the closest taking second in the high jump in 1998 and 1999.

  • Barrington holds off Burlington Central May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
It was Senior Day for the Barrington softball team Friday and the Fillies played their final game of the season at the Fields of Dreams. Or did they? "We hope we have one more game here," said Fillies' senior third baseman Loren Krzysko. If the Fillies do, it will mean they're playing in their own Class 4A supersectional on June 3. But there's a long road ahead before that and Barrington, ranked No. 2 in the Daily Herald Top 20 as well as the Class 4A Illinois Coaches Association poll, tuned up for the postseason with a 3-2 win over Burlington Central, the No. 6 team in the Daily Herald Top 20 and No. 3 in the ICA Class 3A poll.

  • Sycamore upsets Burlington C. in regional final May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
There was no comeback this time for the Burlington Central girls soccer team. Sycamore scored with 18:33 remaining in the match Friday and the Rockets were unable to find the equalizer as the Spartans upset the top-seeded Rockets, 1-0, in the championship match of the Class 2A Sycamore regional.

  • Burlington Central downs Prairie Ridge May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Line drives are so overrated! Burlington Central didn’t hit many Thursday, but enough bouncers and rollers found holes to propel the Rockets to a 4-2 nonconference victory over Prairie Ridge on Rocket Hill. Dan Gerke went the distance on the mound, allowing just 6 hits. Leadoff man Mike Lee and No. 9 hitter Drew Wiss each had 2 hits for the Rockets (16-9).

  • Huntley’s Tim McCloyn participates in the long jump during the Fox Valley Conference meet. The Red Raiders host a Class 3A sectional Friday night.

Huntley primed for another big night May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley boys track coach Jim Rolando has said his team's success this season has boiled down to teamwork. That theory is backed up by the Red Raiders winning both the McHenry County and Fox Valley Conference titles. Huntley looks to add to its string of success Friday at its own Class 3A sectional, where berths in next weekend's state finals in Charleston will be on the line.

Burlington C. breaks loose on Senior Day May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
It took a few innings for the Burlington Central softball team to get its bats going on Senior Day Wednesday, but when the Rockets did it was another hit parade. Held to a run on 2 hits in the first three innings by Hampshire senior Jennifer Hurst. Central broke out and scored 7 runs on 11 hits in its final three at-bats for an 8-1 nonconference win. "It was just the excitement of Senior Day and everyone being all giddy," smiled BC senior second baseman Lauren King, who was recognized with classmates Melanie Gajewski, Rebecca Roscher and Mackenzie Paschke.

  • Burlington Central’s Katie Trupp competes in and wins the high jump during the Burlington Central girls track sectional. Trupp will compete at the Class 2A state finals in Charleston this weekend.

Burlington Central’s Trupp seeking more May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Burlington Central senior Katie Trupp is no stranger to the girls track and field state finals podium. As a freshman she took fifth in the state in high jump and followed that up with a pair of medals sophomore year in the pole vault (sixth) and high jump (seventh). Trupp will look to make it a 3-peat at this weekend's Class 2A state finals at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium in Charleston. Class 1A preliminaries start today, while Class 2A and 3A action gets under way Friday.
