  • Richmond too tall for Burlington Central Dec 16, 2014 10:42 PM
Burlington Central’s student section was dead silent, besides a few squeaks and gasps, for the first 6 minutes of Tuesday night’s boys basketball game against Richmond-Burton. That’s how long it took the Rockets to score 10 points and the crowd to erupt in a tradition known as Silent Night. Their jubilation was short-lived, however, as Richmond-Burton went up by 9 at the half and Burlington Central could not hit its shots in a 61-48 Big Northern East loss at Rocket Hill.

Central, which won its 26th straight BN-East game, held the Royal Lions to 7 second-half points and forced 32 turnovers for the game.

  • Burlington C. rolls to 25th straight BN-East win Dec 9, 2014 10:30 PM
Opponents would likely view Burlington Central as a different team with Sam Pryor back on the court. The state’s second-ranked girls basketball team in Class 3A sees Pryor’s return from a knee injury differently. Pryor had a game-high double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds in her second game of the season Tuesday night. But juniors Shelby Holt and Kayla Ross also scored in double figures as visiting Burlington (7-0) opened defense of its Big Northern East title with a 65-22 victory over Richmond-Burton at Lou Ramirez Gymnasium.

And even though the Rockets posted a 16-point win, this one took a little more work than the previous four. Junior Shelby Holt hit for five more 3-pointers in scoring 17 points as Burlington Central played through some adversity for the first time this season in beating Machesney Park Harlem 50-34 to win its second straight tournament championship.
