With the chance to avenge an early exit from last year's playoffs in an upset loss to Buffalo Grove, Glenbrook South seized the opportunity. The Titans (20-4-4) struck back with two first-half goals after the Bison had stunned the favored veteran Central Suburban League club with a 13th-minute goal from Colleen Zickert. Fifth-seeded Glenbrook South then held off the No. 2 seed the rest of the way to earn a 2-1 victory Friday night in Class 3A sectional championship play at Palatine. • Buffalo Grove earns another shot at Barrington May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
A week ago, Buffalo Grove outside hitter Scott Swedberg could only sit and watch as the Bison played Barrington in the Mid-Suburban League boys volleyball championship match. The senior was aching to play, but with his arm in a sling due to a rotator cuff injury, Swedberg had to suffer on the bench as BG fell in straight sets. "I was disappointed," said the senior. "It was tough not to be on the court with my teammates." At 6:30 p.m. Friday, Swedberg will finally get his chance to go up against the Broncos. BG's 25-20, 25-15 regional championship victory over Fremd in Palatine means the Bison are moving on to a sectional semifinal match against the Broncos, who won the Waukegan regional Wednesday to advance to sectional play on their home court.

  • Okamoto, Buffalo Grove stop Stevenson May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Second-seeded Buffalo Grove continued its hair-raising ride in the playoffs on Tuesday night when two first-half goals and a sensational spot kick save from senior keeper Katie Okamoto held off fifth-seeded Stevenson in a 2-1 victory at Chic Anderson Stadium in Palatine. • That was one Reilly fast sectional at Fremd May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The bragging rights in the Reilly household will likely switch to current Libertyville senior Shane Reilly. Going back the 1980's, Reilly's father Mike was a distance runner at Libertyville and had put up a best effort of 4:24 in the 1,600-meter run. Friday night at the Class 3A Fremd sectional, Reilly bested his dad with a sensational effort in the 1,600-meter run. Reilly ran fifth in a loaded mile field, but his 4:19.66 time was good enough for a trip to the state finals next weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Reilly now is the best of the Reillys. "I finally beat my dad's time," Reilly said. "I felt really good coming into the final lap and knew I had a good time in me tonight." Reilly's six-second PR was just one of many great efforts at the Fremd sectional. The host Vikings won the meet with 71 points to 68 for runner-up Stevenson.
