  • Evan Kurtz will be one of the players to watch next fall writes Craig Brueske. Like the rest of his St. Charles North teammates, Kurtz will be playing for a new coach.

Time of year when everyone’s excited to be 0-0 Oct 22, 2012 12:00 AM
This column is brought to you by the number five and the letter W. Five is the magic number shared by area football playoff qualifiers this season. • Jeff Otterby, a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Haines Middle School in St. Charles, was one of the NFL replacement refs. Here Otterby keeps a close eye on Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

St. Charles teacher enjoys time as NFL replacement ref Oct 15, 2012 12:00 AM
This is a story about a middle school teacher. Before you put down your newspaper or click to another on-line website, please give me a chance to explain.

  • Aurora Central Catholic coach Brian Casey

Casey’s enthusiasm helps Aurora Central turn program around Oct 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Fifteen years ago, Bill Clinton was our president, the top movie at the box office was “Titanic”, the Chicago Bulls won the NBA championship, and the price of a gallon of gas was $1.21. The year 1997 also marked the last time Aurora Central Catholic’s football team qualified for the state playoffs. That’s one of the reasons why ACC’s sixth victory of the 2012 campaign — a 55-0 blowout of Guerin last Friday night at Bob Stewart Field — carried special meaning.

  • St. Charles North senior volleyball player Alex Busch, pictured with Marklund client J.D., helped organize a team-bonding trip two years ago.

Volunteering at Marklund a win-win for area athletes Oct 1, 2012 12:00 AM
A huge sports fan myself, I'll admit there are times when I can get emotionally charged while watching one of my favorite teams play — just ask my wife.

  • Playoff outlook yields some sure things, some longshots Sep 25, 2012 12:00 AM

Heading into last Cross-town Classic, Gould reflects on 1st 12 Sep 4, 2012 12:00 AM
At first glance, I thought the Illinois High School Association's 2012 football schedule was transposed. Looking at the Upstate Eight Conference River Division schedule a few weeks ago left me shaking my head. While there are still 9 regular-season games on the docket, with the final 7 being UEC River matchups, things are a bit mixed up this time around.

  • Jorie Clawson, left, and Ruth Vostal’s St. Charles North soccer team finished second in the state a year after Vostal’s brother Tom’s North Stars softball team also took second.

Time to say goodbye to 2011-12 school year Jun 9, 2012 12:00 AM
The calendar reads June and I shake my head in disbelief. Another school year has come and gone and I'm still shaking my head in disbelief. I'm not sure where the months have vanished to but it's time to reflect upon the 2011-12 high school sports season in the Tri-Cities.

  • Kaneland coach Brian Aversa, left, and first base coach Jim Smedley embrace after an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest in last year’s Class 3A state championship game. The Knights have earned the top seed in their regional this spring.

Kaneland aims to maintain focus and recapture the magic May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Here we go again. Believe it or not, it has been nearly a year since Kaneland captured the Class 3A state baseball championship with an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest. "Looking back at it, it was a blur," said Knights coach Brian Aversa. "You have to enjoy it while it lasts. Before I knew it, we were playing on a Saturday for the state championship. "It was great." Despite graduating a ton of talent from last year's team, Kaneland finds itself in a similar position heading into this week's postseason tournament — as the top seed in the regional.

Three years ago, St. Charles North pitcher Zach Hirsch befriended a freshman student at the school, Graham Jackson, who truly needed a friend as he came to term with autism. Fast forward to this spring, and Hirsch has overcome an injury to become a standout pitcher at Nebraska, while Jackson has made huge progress of his own.

  • St. Charles North’s Kaitlyn Waslawski is one of a number of young players playing a key role for area teams this spring.

From one through nine, some early observations Apr 4, 2012 12:00 AM
In honor of the baseball/softball season, here are nine things that are on my mind:

  • Geneva’s Schiller enjoying more thrills with Falcons Mar 13, 2012 12:00 AM
From Burgess Field to Huskie Stadium, Bulldog Stadium to Camp Randall, Kaneland's Peterson Field to the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Patrick Schiller has played on a number of football fields over the course of his football career. On Monday night, Schiller experienced the thrill of a lifetime from the sidelines inside the Georgia Dome as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Schiller, a 2007 graduate of Geneva High School, admittedly has to pinch himself these days as he reflects upon the occurrences of the past month.

  • St. Charles North’s Kyle Nelson dunks over Larkin’s Brent Cooks during Thursday’s game at Larkin High School in Elgin.

  • Coaches believe elusive state title will come Feb 6, 2012 12:00 AM
