Lisle, VFW working to preserve meaning of Memorial Day May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Lisle residents and members of Ross Bishop VFW Post 5696 are joining forces to ensure the true meaning of Memorial Day isn't lost during the approaching holiday weekend. "Memorial Day, to me, is remembering all those who have sacrificed," said retired Army Reserve Col. Brett Nila, commander of the VFW Lisle post. Nila will speak at a Memorial Day ceremony.

The best cities often feature sprawling parks. There's Central Park amid the skyscrapers of New York City. And in Chicago, of course, there's Lincoln Park with its zoo and acres of green space. So our Joan Broz says it's not a surprise that a town like Lisle would use the same concept, scaled to the size of the community. PrairieWalk Pond and Dragonfly Landing are the village's oasis on the west side of downtown.

When you treasure trees the way the Morton Arboretum does, it seems natural to add a half-dozen tree houses for a touch of whimsy. "Tree House Tales" will open in June. "We want to give our visitors another reason to celebrate the amazing stories that trees have to tell," said Sue Wagner, arboretum vice-president of education and information.

‘The Paris Wife' introduces Big Read fans to a young Hemingway Mar 13, 2012 12:00 AM

The two-day free event is part of a package of activities that begin with the Lisle Christmas Parade at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.
