  • The stage is set for Stevenson, Geneva in Peoria Mar 19, 2015 3:13 PM
A lot has changed since the IHSA decided 20 years ago to move the boys basketball state tournaments from Champaign to Peoria. First, the IHSA eventually decided to double the number of champions from two to four. Unfortunately, this also cut the number of people attending the tournament each year. And now, one of the big issues people are keeping an eye on this weekend is not just what happens on the court in the Peoria Civic Center’s Carver Arena on Saturday. That’s when the IHSA will decide if the tournaments stay in Peoria for another five years or if they find a new home. Champaign also wants them back in the renovated Assembly Hall, oops, State Farm Center. And the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates believes it can rekindle the big-school interest by holding the Class 3A and 4A finals in an area closer to most of the bigger schools. So, all of that is swirling around as we get set to provide you with our 4A and 3A state tourney picks for the eighth time.

  • Bolingbrook denies West Aurora at Hinsdale Central Mar 18, 2015 1:00 AM
In perhaps a more forgiving world Reggie Jordan’s 30-foot running 3-point try would have banked in. It was the perfect setup. DaQuan Cross rebounded a missed free throw with 3.9 seconds left — West Aurora trailing Bolingbrook by a point — and passed the basketball to Jordan headed downcourt. Instead the long one-hander bounced off the backboard, deflected off the rim and away, and Bolingbrook claimed a 50-49 victory at Tuesday’s Class 4A Hinsdale Central supersectional, earning its first state semifinal berth, on Friday against Stevenson.

  • No questioning West Aurora’s effort Mar 17, 2015 11:50 PM
It was not the scenario West Aurora coach Gordie Kerkman had in mind when the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs began. The fifth-winningest coach in state history certainly hoped to be in Hinsdale on Tuesday night for the third time in the last four seasons in search of a sixth career Final Four berth. But after losing starting point guard Matt Dunn to an athletic code violation after the regional championship, the Blackhawks were dealt a double blow this week when star forward Roland Griffin was suspended for a school disciplinary matter. Sixth-man Drake Spears was lost on Monday with an ankle injury. But against all expectations, West Aurora had a chance for the ultimate steal against Bolinbrook. But neither senior forward Tommy Koth nor guard Reggie Jordan could find the range in the last eight seconds as Bolingbrook persevered for a 50-49 victory.

  • Benet too fast for Bolingbrook Feb 23, 2015 9:53 PM
Bolingbrook likes to play fast, but so does Benet. In Monday’s Oswego East sectional semifinal the Redwings used a fast start to jump ahead and then ran with the Raiders the rest of the way in an 85-66 win to notch the school’s record-setting 30th win and advance to Thursday’s sectional final.
