Metea Valley's Wieland shows he belongsMay 21, 2013 12:00 AM
The libero never seems to belong. They play defense. They even wear different jerseys. But Metea Valley defensive specialist Tom Wieland was a key component for the Mustangs during their 25-21, 25-14 sweep of Glenbard East in a regional semifinal match played Tuesday night in Lombard. Wieland had 5 digs, but his biggest came late in the first game with Metea Valley holding a 23-20 edge. Wieland popped up a powerful attack from Glenbard East’s best outside hitter Joey Farrell, which allowed the Mustangs an opportunity to attack. Martin Krasuski turned Wieland’s dig into one of his 17 kills, giving Metea Valley a 24-20 lead.

Garza stellar in return, but Cubs' pen blows itMay 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Matt Garza couldn't have asked for a better return to a major league mound after a 10-month layoff. Teele’s big hit helps Schaumburg past West Chicago May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
During tryouts back in February, Tyler Teele wasn't in the forefront for Schaumburg coach Cal Seely. Back then Seely couldn't have expected Teele, a sophomore with no varsity experience, to be the guy who would bring him his first playoff victory over West Chicago (4-27). Sporting All The Benefits May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Do you think sports are all fun and games? While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Although some may argue participating in a sport is a distraction and a time consuming activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares otherwise. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With obesity becoming such a prevalent issue, it is no fallacy that children need to increase their physical activity, and what better way to start then by participating in a sport.
