Whistle takes away Hawks goal in 1st Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Oh, what might have been. Leading 1-0 on Patrick Sharp’s goal midway through the first period and looking in full control against a Boston team clearly on its heels, the Blackhawks looked like they had just applied a mini-dagger to the Bruins.

Fatigue setting in with another OT? Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Eventually, even some of the best-conditioned athletes in the world succumb to exhaustion. Adrenaline plummets to “E.” Sweat-soaked hockey pads and gloves feel like sandbags on shoulders under a Sahara sun. After playing nearly three full overtimes in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Blackhawks and Bruins followed up by — what the heck — playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation time Saturday night at the United Center.

Hawks’ small Shaw is big on heart Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Andrew Shaw called it “luck,” attached to another emotional outburst for which he received unconditional absolution from Rocky Wirtz during a morning-after radio appearance by the Chairman of the Blackhawks. But as long as we’re on the subject, why not reach for a hat trick of rhymes and settle on “pluck”? Those who have observed his brief yet busy career will attest that Shaw, the “Pocket Pest” whose given weight of 180 pounds seems a bit lofty, has a competitive gene that leads him into areas where angels fear to tread.

Blackhawks’ Keith sees a more mature Kane Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
There are no subjects off limits during the Stanley Cup Final, not even Patrick Kane’s reputation as a guy who loves a good party. “I think he’s always been a little bit misunderstood in some ways,” said Blackhawks teammate Duncan Keith. “Every guy likes to go out and have fun, especially when you’re a young guy. “He’s no different. Sometimes it just kind of got caught on camera, pictures, things like that. Maybe one incident sticks out in people’s heads.”

Roselle, Woodridge Blackhawk fans show off their spirit Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
This Blackhawks-Bruins Stanley Cup series is a dream matchup for Lee Ann Stawczyk, pitting her favorite hockey team against her second-favorite.To be sure, Stawczyk insists “I bleed black and red,” the Hawks colors. But she has a soft spot for the Bruins; no matter who wins, she says, “I have a parade to go to.” She wears her enthusiasm on her sleeve — and her garage door.

Playing in Game 1 a big hit for Blackhawks’ Bollig Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
On the eve of playing his first postseason game since the Minnesota series, Brandon Bollig admitted that one thought kept running through his head: what is it actually going to be like out there when the puck is dropped in Game 1 against Boston at the UC? “It didn’t disappoint,” Bollig said with a grin.

Just how did Crawford keep all those pucks out of the net? Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
As he has been throughout this playoff run, Corey Crawford was the straw that stirred the drink for the Blackhawks, stopping 51 of the 54 shots he faced, many in spectacular fashion, en route to his 13th playoff win and more important, a 1-0 series lead for the Hawks.

Murray: Depth will be key to Game 2 Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Troy Murray says the Blackhawks wouldn’t have had the streak they had at the beginning of the season or the record they had in the regular season, and they wouldn’t be where they are right now if they didn’t have that real good depth and secondary scoring. They had plenty of that in Game 1 and Murray expects more of the same the rest of the series.

Chicago holds fond memories for Orr, Esposito Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Bobby Orr is on the phone, having just learned he was long ago cited as an idol of Joel Quenneville, the most interesting coach in the world. “Is that right?” Orr was saying. “I'm thrilled. He's done one heck of a job in Chicago.” Orr will be in Boston for Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Hall of Fame defenseman played his first game for the Bruins and his last for the Blackhawks, forced to retire at age 30 with a ravaged knee.

Blackhawks’ Toews just focused on one goal: Stanley Cup Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
It’s a true tribute to the Blackhawks' depth that they have made it this far in the postseason without their Jonathan Toews contributing much in the way of offense, but as teammate Dave Bolland sees it there’s no way to measure on the score sheet the heart and will the team captain plays with.

Keith’s ability to log big minutes relished Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Twenty-five minutes of ice time per game? How about nearly 50 minutes? For Hawks defenseman Duncan Keith, it doesn't matter, especially in the postseason. "I want to be out on the ice.”

Shaw brings his unique brand of excitement to Hawks Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
It was Andrew Shaw’s night Wednesday. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Blackhawks winger seemed to be everywhere, mixing it up with Boston’s 6-foot-9 defenseman Zdeno Chara in front of the net, setting up Dave Bolland’s clutch goal in the third period, then scoring himself on a double deflection off his shin pad in triple overtime for the 4-3 victory over the Bruins that ended the third-longest game in franchise history.Shaw then capped his special night by swearing on national TV in a postgame interview that already has gone viral.
