  • Can Blackhawks learn from watching playoffs? May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
There is a lot the Blackhawks can learn from watching the way Darryl Sutter took the Kings to the Finals, and the way Dave Tippett took average goalies and made them great in Phoenix.

  • Questions on Konerko, Kane and so many others May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Questions without answers from inside and outside the world of sports, including "Whose day is it to watch Patrick Kane?"

  • Hysterics over Hawks’ Kane hysterical May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
The strangest part of the Patrick Kane saga is that all who overlooked his faults on the ice — and often made excuses for him — suddenly see them now because of his flaws off the ice. Apparently, he's become a terrible hockey player in the three weeks since the season ended.

  • Rob Flick, who played 45 games with the Rockford IceHogs last season, has signed a three-year contract with the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks sign forward Flick to three-year deal May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
Forward Rob Flick, a 21-year-old from Ontario, has agreed to a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. Flick recorded 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists), along with a +2 plus/minus rating and 91 penalty minutes in 45 regular-season games with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League this past season.

  • Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane, seen here during a game in 2010, is facing some bad press after an incident in Madison. This is the third or fourth time Kane's alcohol-fueled activity has been caught on camera.

Only Kane can figure all this out May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Nothing anybody can say or do to Patrick Kane will matter until, at his current age 23 or any other age, he wants to change his dubious behavior patterns.

  • The Soapbox May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Among the topics in The Soapbox are injury-plagued teams, the new coaster in town, high-achieving schools and the Sears, er, Willis Tower.

  • Arlington Park contract dispute was just ridiculousMay 11, 2012 12:00 AM
All that hoopla over a contract agreement between Arlington Park and the horsemen? Absolute nonsense. All it did was cast a cloud over the season-opener, made both sides look foolish and petulant, and gave racing fans just what they wanted: 3-, 4-, and 5-horse fields to wager on for the first two days of the meet. And for what? An agreement that could have gotten done a week earlier — at least — had calmer heads prevailed like they ultimately did.

  • Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has put himself on the spot with the removal of assistant coach Mike Haviland, who was popular among the players.

Pressure now on Hawks' Quenneville May 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Joel Quenneville got his way when he fired Mike Haviland and kept Mike Kitchen, but the result is he's placed a target on his own back and he'll need to produce next season.

  • The Blackhawks have fired assistant coach Mike Haviland. Haviland has spent the last four seasons as an assistant, joining the staff in July 2008, a little more than two months before Joel Quenneville became head coach. Haviland also coached the team's American Hockey League affiliates in Norfolk, Va., from 2005-07 and Rockford from 2007-08.

  • Before he even began talking about the dismissal of assistant coach Mike Haviland on Tuesday, Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville wanted to clear the air about rumors that he may be headed to Montreal to join good buddy Marc Bergevin, who was just named GM of the Canadiens.

Quenneville staying put, defends dismissing HavilandMay 8, 2012 12:00 AM
Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville wanted to clear the air about rumors that he may be headed to Montreal to join good buddy Marc Bergevin, who was just named GM of the Canadiens. There was some speculation on other things that were going on here in Chicago about me being somewhere else, but first and foremost, Im excited about being here in Chicago, said Quenneville, who has two years remaining on his contract. I love the opportunity, I love the organization, I love where were heading in the future and thats something I wanted to put to bed right from the outset.

  • Norm Maciver is the new assistant general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Blackhawks promote Maciver to assistant GM May 7, 2012 12:00 AM
Norm Maciver has been promoted to assistant general manager, replacing Marc Bergevin, who left recently to become GM for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks team officials announced Monday. Norm has proven to be a valuable asset to our hockey operations over the past five years, Blackhawks vice president/general manager Stan Bowman said in a statement. He has an excellent handle on the players within our organization, from recent draft picks to veterans, and a great eye for talent evaluating.

  • Blackhawks Jonathan Toews (19) and Marian Hossa (81) pause to chat at a practice during the playoffs last month.

Blackhawks’ Hossa on the mend May 3, 2012 12:00 AM
A couple of weeks after a brutal hit by Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres in Game 3 knocked him to the ice and forced him off on a stretcher, Marian Hossa is back home in Slovakia. But the Blackhawks forward is far from home free in his recovery from a concussion he sustained on the play.

  • Marc Bergevin, the assistant general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks, is leaving Chicago to be the new general manager of the Montreal Canadiens.

Hawks’ Bergevin new GM for Canadiens May 2, 2012 12:00 AM
After finishing last in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadiens have raided the front office of the Chicago Blackhawks and hired Marc Bergevin as clubs new general manager. Bergevin has seven years of front-office experience, most recently as assistant GM for the Blackhawks under Stan Bowman. The 46-year-old Montreal native replaces Pierre Gauthier, who was fired before the Canadiens closed the year with a 31-35-16 record, finishing last in the Northeast Division and last in the Eastern Conference.

  • Phoenix Coyotes' Antoine Vermette (50) looks to pass against Chicago Blackhawks' Michael Frolik (67) during the third period of Game 4 of an NHL hockey Stanley Cup first-round playoff series in Chicago, Thursday, April 19, 2012. The Coyotes won 3-2.

Hawks to-do list: fix power play, find No. 2 centerApr 26, 2012 12:00 AM
The Blackhawks have a number of issues to address this off-season, but two stand out above all else: the power play and finally landing a legitimate second line center. Veteran hockey writer Tim Sassone says its clear that Marcus Kruger simply is not the answer as a top-three center, and Patrick Kane and is an all-star at right wing and should stay there and not play center, where he was knocked off the puck frequently in the playoffs.

  • Hawks had multitude of issues this season Apr 25, 2012 12:00 AM
From a rancid power play and penalty kill to some shaky goaltending at times. From lack of size especially on defense to a true No. 2 center, the list of issues was a fairly long one for the Hawks while their playoff run was a very short one. And thats why Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman was once again at the podium in April explaining why his team was one and done in the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

NHL players need to stop defending their ownApr 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville called the vicious hit by Raffi Torres on Marian Hossa in Game 3 the turning point of the series. He was right. As the final few reporters were filtering out of the Hawks locker room after the series finale Monday night, a striking image emerged: Hossa’s game jersey hanging in his stall.

  • Missing ‘net front guy’ short-circuited Hawks power play Apr 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Though it was one of the greatest mysteries and biggest headaches this season, the reason the Blackhawks power play struggled despite an all-star cast is really quite simple, according to Patrick Kane. There really wasnt a net front guy the whole year, Kane said. The power plays that have been successful in the past, you had guys like (Tomas) Kopecky, (Troy) Brouwer, (Dustin) Byfuglien guys that stand in front. Thats a huge part of the power play and there was really no net front guy this year.

  • Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said Wednesday that it wasn't more physical play that kept the Blackhawks from advancing in the playoffs. He likes the puck-possession play of his defenseman. Quenneville and general manager Stan Bowman expect to have some good discussions about the makeup of the team this summer.

Hawks’ Bowman open to adding size Apr 25, 2012 12:00 AM
As Blackhawks management and players met the media for the last time this spring Wednesday at the UC, they were certainly coy about their off-season plans. That part wasn’t astonishing, as the Hawks aren’t about to reveal their strategy for the summer. What was mildly surprising is the Hawks believe their lack of size and grit isn’t an impediment to winning in a Western Conference dominated by big teams.

  • In the end, Blackhawks had very little fight Apr 24, 2012 12:00 AM
Yes, coach, Raffi Torres' abuse of Marian Hossa was a turning point in the Blackhawks-Coyotes series. The problem was that the Hawks let it turn in Phoenix' favor instead of theirs instead of being mean enough to take advantage.
