    By 1945, at the end of WWII, less than three percent of American military personnel were women. Barbara “Bobbie” Merritt was one of them. A resident of Sedgebrook, a senior living community in Lincolnshire, Bobbie achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer inthe Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving in Arlington, Virginia.

    George Bailey and the magical town of Bedford Falls return for “It’s Wonderful Life.” The holiday classic will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, and Sunday, Dec. 14. Admission is $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Sharing Connection Furniture Bank. Come early and enjoy the preshow music on the Tivoli’s Wurlitzer pipe organ.

    College of DuPage is offering a new honors seminar titled “The Physics of Politics” for the first time in spring 2015. “This class is geared toward students pursuing a broad range of majors, including everything from philosophy to mechanical engineering,” said physics professor Tom Carter. “This combination of significant writing, group projects and basic quantitative analysis will provide opportunities and challenges for everyone.”

    College of DuPage has begun construction of the new Homeland Security Training Center, a 39,714-square-foot facility that includes a state-of-the-art indoor firing range and a call center training lab. This facility is Phase II in the completion of the College’s Homeland Security Training Institute.

    The Humanitarian Service Project of DuPage County is calling for donations of new toys and nonperishable food to support underprivileged children and families through its annual Christmas Offering. It has been putting gifts under the tree for local children in need since 1979. This year, it is projected to serve 350 families with nutritious groceries as well as provide 1600 children and 125 seniors with Christmas gifts.

     
  • 18 years for Chicago man who pointed gun at Bensenville police Nov 17, 2014 4:42 PM
    A Chicago man accused of pointing a gun at a Bensenville police officer and pulling the trigger multiple times, before being shot himself, was sentenced Monday to 18 years in prison. Namar Davis, 25, of the 900 block of North LeClaire Street, pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of armed violence. In turn, prosecutors dropped other charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint charges.

Thirty five youth participated in a Parliamentary Procedure Jeopardy game created by Avni Patel, learned the importance of being a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer taught by Maddie Currie, Abby Daniels, Charlotte Roberts and parent volunteer Robbie Roberts.

     
  • New legislation could help with O'Hare plane noise Nov 13, 2014 5:32 AM
    A group of DuPage County Board members learned the county could help residents suffering from O'Hare plane noise by supporting a proposed state law change and lobbying Chicago to update O'Hare's noise compatibility plan. “Any advocacy the county can provide would be greatly appreciated,” Bensenville Village Manager Mike Cassady said.

    The Suburban Chicago Club of Soroptimist International is seeking applicants for educational grants.The Virginia Wagner Educational Grant is specific to these states in the Midwestern Region: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Women residing in these states who are attending college/university in pursuit of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree are eligible to apply. Judging is based on effort toward education, scholarship, extracurricular activities and financial need.

    With residents in northeast DuPage sending a loud and clear message they want something done to reduce airplane noise from O’Hare International Airport, county board members are getting involved. The board’s work will begin Wednesday evening with the first meeting of its ad hoc committee on airport noise mitigation.

  • Food packager could bring hundreds of jobs to Bartlett Nov 4, 2014 5:12 PM
    Creative Werks, a food packaging company for Nestlé, Hershey and other candy giants, is signing a $32 million lease to move into a Bartlett industrial park, village officials have announced. The company nearly passed on expanding to the Bartlett site in favor of properties in Aurora and northwest Indiana.
