Hinsdale South is a No. 2 seed but hasn't had a lengthy postseason since it made the super sectionals in 2004. In Class 3A Glenbard South is trying to turn a strong end to the regular season into a sectional title at home.

    Saturday's singles finals match at the Naperville North sectional was a contest between two seniors, four-time state qualifiers, who are viewed by their coaches as the ideal high school athletes and team members. Gordon Zhang of Naperville North defeated Matt Hirsh of Glenbard West 6-4, 6-0 in the finals to win the sectional singles championship.

    Stephanie Abello goes by the nickname "Slap" and Maeve McGuire is a leadoff hitter by trade. Don't be fooled by those descriptions. McGuire homered in both ends of Benet's Saturday doubleheader with Marian Catholic, Abello went deep three times in the second game and the No. 3 Redwings swept the Spartans 6-3 and 9-1 in Lisle.

    Fremd returns to its winning ways May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
    The Wheaton United girls lacrosse team made a little history recently.Wheaton went 5-0 in DuPage-Upstate Eight Conference play to win the programs first league title in its seven-year existence. Wheaton scored a 10-9 conference win in overtime against St. Charles and edged Neuqua Valley (10-8) in another league tilt. Those were big victories for us, said Wheaton United coach Charles Solomon. There have always been tough teams in our conference and to be able to beat Neuqua, which is always a very solid team, for the first time in our programs history was a huge step for United lacrosse.

    Benet coach Jerry Schilf worried how ready his team was for a doubleheader last Saturday, with good reason. Prom lasted late the night before. A rain-soaked field delayed first pitch an hour. Maeve McGuire put those anxieties to bed. McGuire homered leading off both ends of the doubleheader, and Benet swept Joliet Catholic to maintain its 1-game lead over Marian Catholic in the East Suburban Catholic Conference race. McGuire ran the count full leading off Game 1, then unloaded on a mammoth shot into the wind over the fence in right. Next game, same thing, this time to straight center for McGuires area-leading 14th homer. "It just set the tone, Schilf said.

    Marian Catholic (138 points) hustled to the team title in the East Suburban Catholic Conference boys track meet Thursday behind its meet-record 43.12 in the 400 relay and six other event championships. Benet Academy (117) finished runner-up and Carmel took third (97) on a gorgeous, mild day in Mundelein.

    Wheaton Warrenville Souths Andy Page knew he was going to have a tough match against fellow freshman Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central at the Naper Valley Tennis Invite at Waubonsie Valley on Saturday. After impressing observers by winning his three matches leading to the finals, Page finished second to Joyce for only his second loss of the season, a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the second-singles championship match.

    Benet roared back from a 2-0 deficit to sweep all three flights of doubles and defeat visiting Carmel in boys tennis Thursday afternoon in Lisle. After the freshman duo of Brandon Dechter and Kevin Hunt began the East Suburban Catholic Conference dual with straight-set victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, the Redwings top two doubles teams won three-set matches. That set up some heroics from Alex Romano-Stephen Konrad, who needed little time to settle the outcome in cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. The 3-2 victory gives the Redwings a perfect 8-0 record in ESCC play, while the Corsairs drop to 5-2 with one league match left in the regular season, Marist next Monday at home.
