  • Sweep of state champs just grand for Benet Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Emily York has waited all year to break into the homer column. She did so Saturday, in grand style. And she had company. Benet's sophomore hit a go-ahead grand slam in Game 2 of a doubleheader with Marist — one of 6 homers the two teams slugged in the game — and the No. 3 Redwings went on to sweep the defending state champs in Lisle by scores of 6-2 and 18-13.

  • Gagliano’s 56-game streak ends Apr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Marissa Gagliano is human after all. When Wheaton Academy's junior shortstop went 0-for-4 last Monday against Rosary, it marked the first time in her high school career she failed to reach base. Her streak had reached 56 straight games reaching base; Radford recruit Gagliano, hitting .545 on the season with a .591 on base percentage, 10 runs scored and 10 steals in six games this year, has hit safely in 48 of her 57 high school games.

  • Benet earns DH split Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
What do you get when you combine Benet’s great lineup, a very good opponent and a tight strike zone? A tough afternoon for pitchers. It was that kind of day Saturday at Providence. No. 2 Benet battled back from deficits of 5-0 and 9-6 in the second game of a doubleheader, but the host Celtics scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh for a 13-11 win.

  • Audrey Blazek of Benet and Emily Hamilton of Napervile North round the corner during the 3,200-meter run at the Gus Scott track meet at Naperville North on Friday.

No debating great Scott field Apr 12, 2013 12:00 AM
After Naperville North's annual coed Gus Scott Track and Field Invitational is all over, coaches of all the teams meet in the field house to decide on boys and girls MVPs. It could have been a lively debate on Friday. St. Charles East's Britney Williams earned the girls honor for lighting up the oval in the 400- and 800-meter runs. The Iowa State-bound senior won the A-level of the three-tier meet with a time of 2 minutes, 18.87 seconds, nearly nine seconds ahead of Naperville North's Ella Guppy. Williams' time went under the Class 3A qualifying standard by almost a second. Williams returned to win the 400 in 59.33, again dipping below the qualifying standard in an event that took her to Charleston as a junior.

  • Suddenly everyone’s going deep Apr 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Jerry Schilf must feel like the character from the movie “Back to the Future” who steps out of a time machine and doesn’t recognize his own home town. The game of softball, it’s a different world to Benet’s coach these days. Schilf can recall being a part of three 1-0 sectional playoff games decided by wild pitches. A week ago, Schilf watched his little lefty Abbie Gerth slug a home run, and his team score 76 runs in four days. “I think honestly over time the game of softball has evolved,” said Stephanie Abello, a sophomore on Schilf’s Benet team. “Girls are getting stronger.”
