  • Suburban cheerleaders advance to state Jan 31, 2015 10:18 PM
The cheerleading sectionals in DeKalb and Rolling Meadows were drama-filled competitions on Saturday. Despite some technical difficulties with its soundtrack, South Elgin squeaked into next month's state finals after IHSA judges allowed it to perform a second routine — this time with music. “The trophy goes home with us, not them!” the squad chanted during its routine.

  • Benet takes victory to the bank against St. Viator Jan 23, 2015 10:21 PM
Taking a big halftime lead in a basketball game can be akin to contributing to a savings account. Both can be viewed as safety blankets in case of emergency.

  • Benet, St. Viator swim to dual-meet tie Jan 22, 2015 8:09 PM
For Thursday’s boys swimming meet between St. Viator and visiting Benet Academy, the Lions were approaching it family style. One of St. Viator’s key competitors, Keegan Finn, was out of the meet in an effort to recover from pneumonia, so Lions coach Jamie Klotz had rearranged his lineup, and lowered his expectations. After the meet, a pleased Klotz was thinking he might have underestimated the resolve and unity of his team. “So, yes, we were without Keegan, but everybody else and their brother stepped up pretty huge for us,” he said. The result was a 47-47 tie in a meet both teams were using as an opportunity to refocus for the season’s stretch run.

  • Benet has fun in win over Fremd Jan 19, 2015 11:30 PM
Their matchup was every bit as good as it was expected to be, but Monday night’s girls basketball game at the 25th annual McDonald’s Shootout was a little bit better for Benet than for Fremd.

  • Extra-tired Benet prevails in extra period Jan 19, 2015 11:35 PM
From somewhere, Benet’s boys basketball team found the energy. Even when the Redwings’ fourth game in three days went to overtime against Wheaton Warrenville South, they dug that much deeper. Benet didn’t make a field goal in the extra period, but 13-of-14 free-throw shooting allowed the Redwings to survive a 71-62 slugfest in the third-place game of the WW South Martin Luther King tournament.

  • Shots don’t fall for Benet Jan 16, 2015 12:10 AM
It wasn’t going to take much — maybe just two straight baskets — for someone to take control between Notre Dame and Benet. But that meant someone had to score two straight baskets, something that proved immensely difficult in Thursday’s East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup in Niles. Notre Dame finally managed to do it in the final four minutes, scoring 7 straight points to pull out a rugged 46-43 victory over the visiting Redwings.

  • Benet can’t match Simeon in Pontiac finale Dec 31, 2014 11:31 PM
The members of the Benet boys basketball team almost seemed in awe after their championship game against Simeon on Wednesday night. One of only two teams to win four consecutive state championships in history, Simeon and its star-studded lineup limited the Redwings to a pair of field goals in the opening two quarters of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. The Wolverines seized control midway through the first quarter, holding Benet scoreless for almost the equivalent of an entire quarter in winning its unprecedented 12th Pontiac title with a 46-26 victory.

  • Benet edges St. Charles North Dec 31, 2014 6:10 PM
Colin Bonnett did not hesitate to seize his opportunity. The Benet senior guard converted a 3-point play with 42.4 seconds remaining to give the Redwings a most precarious lead in the first semifinal of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. St. Charles North guard Jake Ludwig had a one-handed runner in the lane with seconds remaining fall tantalizingly short of the basket. As a result, Benet advanced to the championship with a thrilling 41-40 victory over the North Stars at the prestigious boys basketball tournament.

Benet scored 11 of the first 12 points in its Pontiac Holiday Tournament quarterfinal against traditional Public League power Curie and went on to thoroughly dismantle the Condors 67-46 Tuesday afternoon at the famed boys basketball event. Making their first appearance here since 2001, the Redwings not only won their sixth straight game but also earned a date with St. Charles North in the first semifinal on Wednesday.

  • Collectively, Benet takes Montini title Dec 30, 2014 11:34 PM
By now everyone knows about Benet Academy’s trio of stars, but after an impressive run to the Montini Christmas Tournament title, it’s pretty clear that the Redwings are a deep, talented team. In Tuesday night’s 60-42 championship game defeat of previously unbeaten Trinity, the 17-0 Redwings took over the game in the second half with huge contributions from its bench. Sure, point guard Kathleen Doyle had another big game and was named the tourney MVP, but Benet would not have won on Tuesday without its bench and without big production also coming from starters other than the big three of Doyle, Emily Eshoo and Emily Schramek. The Blazers (12-1), who reached the finals at Montini with impressive wins over Neuqua Valley and Marian Catholic, led 27-24 at the half before the Redwings blitzed them with a 16-5 third-quarter followed by a 20-point fourth quarter.

  • Benet grinds out a Pontiac win against Bloom Dec 29, 2014 6:48 PM
It appeared it was still football season when Benet took a 16-13 lead into halftime against Bloom. “It was really a struggle for both teams to score,” Benet boys basketball coach Gene Heidkamp said after the Redwings returned to the historic Pontiac Holiday Tournament for the first time since 2001. But the Redwings played well enough to dispatch the Trojans 43-33 on Monday afternoon to earn a quarterfinal date with defending champion Curie, which eased past Danville 74-45.

  • Benet comes up big against Montini Dec 29, 2014 10:13 PM
Knowing just how good the opposition was, Benet Academy coach Joe Kilbride said Monday night’s showdown with Montini Catholic felt like it went down to the wire. But in reality, the unbeaten Redwings played one of their best games in a long time while knocking off the 16-2 Broncos 58-42 in the semifinals of the Montini Christmas Tournament in Lombard. The Redwings led 41-31 after three quarters even while Emily Eshoo was limited to just 2 points through 24 minutes due to foul trouble. A strong team effort, however, proved to be more than enough to advance the Redwings (16-0) into Tuesday’s championship game against either Marian Catholic or Trinity.
