  • Scouting the Benet Redwings Aug 21, 2014 10:47 PM
Disappointment morphed into motivation for Benet’s football team. Coming off a state semifinal appearance in 2012, the Redwings looked like worldbeaters while racing to a 6-0 record last season. The final four games of the season? Not so memorable.

  • Running with bulls annual reminder of suburban tragedy Jul 9, 2014 4:26 PM
Every time I see news coverage of the bulls running through the streets of Pamplona, or see the annual spectacle mined for entertainment or comedy in a TV commercial, I think of Matthew Tassio. The Glen Ellyn native remains the only American to be killed during the running with the bulls.

  • QB Beneventi transferring to Fenwick from Benet Jun 7, 2014 3:45 PM
A familiar face will be missing from Benet’s football team this fall. Redwings football coach Pat New confirmed on Saturday that quarterback Jack Beneventi is transferring to Fenwick. Beneventi, committed to the University of Iowa, was a two-year starter for Benet who is finishing his junior year at the Lisle school. As a sophomore he helped lead the Redwings to the Class 7A state semifinals, and again quarterbacked Benet to the 7A playoffs last fall.

  • Patience pays off for Glenbard South’s Singleton May 31, 2014 11:58 PM
Even behind the black shades, Joe Singleton looked almost uncomfortable. The finals of the Class 2A 3,200-meter run went out slowly, and the slim Illinois State-bound senior seemed itching to cut loose from the lead pack. He remembered his coaching.

  • Youngsters get taste of state May 29, 2014 10:11 PM
For most of the DuPage County boys tennis players who advanced to this year’s state tournament, it was all about gaining experience for the future. An underclassmen-heavy group learned Thursday at various sites around the Northwest Suburbs it can succeed at the state tournament, but success is far from guaranteed.

  • Benet storms past Batavia May 27, 2014 9:07 PM
Technically, Benet did come from behind in Tuesday’s regional semifinal with Batavia, but it took just one inning for the top-seeded Redwings to take command.

  • Lake Park endures some pain for gain May 24, 2014 12:24 AM
Marcus Jegede, a key to Lake Park’s shot at an unprecedented fifth straight boys state track championship, got maximum results from minimum effort. He had little choice. At Friday’s Class 3A Lake Park boys sectional in Roselle, Jegede was on a crash diet of one jump per event to save a testy hamstring that had allowed him to long jump at only two meets this spring, and no triple jumps.

  • Waubonsie gets edge for postseason May 22, 2014 10:27 PM
The hope was that Thursday’s regular-season finale between Waubonsie Valley and Benet would prove a nice launching pad into next week’s volleyball playoffs. For the most part it did, even though only one team could prevail. On this night it was the visiting Warriors who pulled out a tight 25-21, 25-23 nonconference win to send 26-9 Waubonsie Valley into the postseason with nine straight victories. The win in Lisle also avenged a three-game loss suffered earlier this season to the Redwings.

  • Benet scores 15 in first to clinch ESCC May 21, 2014 9:35 PM
By the end of the first inning, Benet’s baseball team left little doubt about its motivation level to remain East Suburban Catholic Conference champions. A 15-run bottom of the first — yes, 15 runs — powered the Redwings to Wednesday’s 17-7 five-inning victory over visiting Nazareth to clinch back-to-back ESCC titles for the first time in program history.

  • Benet survives close call with Carmel May 14, 2014 10:08 PM
Going into Wednesday’s rematch at Benet, the Carmel softball team was determined not to have a repeat of Monday’s 13-0 pasting at the hands of the Redwings. And the Corsairs got their wish. Carmel battled Benet from the opening pitch and the Redwings didn’t secure the 8-7 victory until Emily York connected on a double to right that scored Julianne Rurka with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
