  • Batavia’s bats go cold May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
As everyone knows, regardless of the sport, you can't win if you don't score. Batavia's softball team was reminded of that the hard way Wednesday afternoon. Playing against a pesky Plainfield East squad in the Class 4A Romeoville sectional, the Bulldogs started and ended the game by squandering scoring opportunities and watched their season come to a close with a 3-0 loss.

Kaneland aims to maintain focus and recapture the magic May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Here we go again. Believe it or not, it has been nearly a year since Kaneland captured the Class 3A state baseball championship with an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest. "Looking back at it, it was a blur," said Knights coach Brian Aversa. "You have to enjoy it while it lasts. Before I knew it, we were playing on a Saturday for the state championship. "It was great." Despite graduating a ton of talent from last year's team, Kaneland finds itself in a similar position heading into this week's postseason tournament — as the top seed in the regional.

  • Marmion tops tough field May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Marmion's boys tennis team came into Saturday's sectional finals at West Aurora poised to cap a stellar season. The deck appeared to be stacked, however, as the Cadets found themselves surrounded by conference champions and players who had already punched a return ticket to the state tournament. But those descriptions fit this year's Cadet squad just as well they do Naperville Central, Batavia, and Waubonsie Valley, the other top teams at the sectional.

  • Batavia boys tennis coach Bob Kummer, here announcing matchups at the start of the action Saturday, saw his team win the UEC River title in Monday’s completion of the tournament. Kummer is retiring after this season, his 33rd as Bulldogs head coach.

    A feel-good finish for Kummer, Batavia May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Every once in a while, though not very often, a real life sports competition concludes with a Hollywood movie-style ending. You know, the sort where everything happens in the most dramatic way possible at the very end despite the odds being against it. That was the case Monday afternoon at the Upstate Eight Conferences River Division tennis tournament in Batavia, as the Bulldogs rallied to pull off a surprise in the team standings, giving retiring coach Bob Kummer a going-away present he wont ever forget. Ive always coached to win, and I can tell you that championships are the greatest memories you can have as a player or coach, Kummer said. I am ecstatic, and every one of my players shares in this.

Growing Batavia program looks like a winner May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Batavia is finding an identity as a boys lacrosse program. Last year, the team was recognized as Aurora Christian/Batavia. This year, dominated by a roster of Batavia students, the team is known as the Batavia Bulldogs. Were still trying to build a program, honestly, Batavia coach Scott Salvati said. We have kids on our team, at least a third of them, who should be playing JV and were trying to play a varsity schedule. Next year well probably have a varsity and JV team, but still I like where were going heading into the playoffs.

A persistent rain washed out the final rounds of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament Saturday, forcing the four area teams that are in the hunt for the title to wait until Monday afternoon. St. Charles North entered the tournament at the top with a slim lead over Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles East. Little changed after Fridays rounds.

St. Charles E. wins sectional May 11, 2012 12:00 AM
Conventional wisdom suggests the team title of a girls track and field sectional is largely symbolic. Try telling that to Britney Williams and her St. Charles East partners on the Saints 1,600-meter relay. With a staggering lead after three legs Williams drive to the title in both the final event of the Class 3A Bartlett sectional, staged at Streamwood High School on Friday night, and the team championship only intensified.
