    By Dave Oberhelman

St. Charles North’s Audrey Ernst crossed the finish line at the Upstate Eight Conference cross country meet, then turned to congratulate her competitors running through the chute. There were plenty to congratulate because the slightly built, blonde-haired freshman won the meet on Saturday. Ernst outdueled familiar foe Gabby Juarez of Streamwood by .6 seconds, winning in 17 minutes, 31.1 seconds on the undulating three-mile course at Lords Park in Elgin.

  • Batavia picks off Geneva Oct 18, 2014 5:17 AM
Nick Bernabei and the rest of his senior class have been dreaming of Geneva since they were kids, a staple for every little Batavia boy who grows up a Bulldog. Even the wildest and happiest of those dreams couldn’t have matched the script that unfolded in front of another standing-room only crowd packed into Batavia Friday night to watch the series’ 95th meeting. Bernabei opened the scoring by intercepting Geneva’s Northern Illinois-bound Daniel Santacaterina on the third play of the game and returning it for a touchdown. That turned out to be the first of five interceptions for the Bulldogs’ ball-hawking defense, and Josh Leonard added another pick-6 in the fourth quarter as the Batavia defense made the difference in a 26-20 victory.

  • UEC bragging rights on line Saturday Oct 15, 2014 1:53 PM
It’s getting to be the fun time of the cross country season — something the Batavia Bulldogs remember quite well. The Bulldogs certainly had fun late last year, qualifying for state for the first time and giving retiring coach Mike DiDomenico quite a send off. We’re still a couple weeks away from the key sectional races, but the postseason does get going this weekend with area teams hungry for bragging rights at their respective conference meets.

  • Tri-Cities volleyball teams prepare for stacked sectional Oct 15, 2014 10:11 AM
Perhaps the Illinois High School Association knew exactly what it was doing when the decision came to shuffle a few girls volleyball sectional tournament alignments this season. Maybe the decision was just by chance — call it the luck of the draw. Whatever the case, the upcoming Class 4A Bartlett sectional field promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. I say it borders on almost being unfair.

  • Ross sparks Neuqua Valley past Batavia Oct 15, 2014 10:27 PM
Batavia hasn’t given up a lot of goals this season. Neuqua Valley’s Ryan Ross hadn’t scored much lately. The likelihood of the Wildcats senior having a huge offensive performance didn’t seem likely during Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover title game, but then again sometimes the unlikely becomes reality. Ross netted a hat trick and the Wildcats cruised to a 3-1 victory.

  • Geneva learns lesson, beats Batavia Oct 14, 2014 9:37 PM
Building a 24-18 lead in the opening game against Batavia, Geneva’s volleyball team found itself in a familiar situation Tuesday night. “At the Mizuno Cup this past weekend, we had a 24-17 lead (over Neuqua Valley) and they came back and beat us that game,” said Geneva sophomore outside hitter Grace Loberg. “We were not going to let that happen.”

  • Geneva race to help support disabled children, adults Oct 13, 2014 5:50 PM

  • Lillie leads St. Charles North to runner-up sectioanl finish Oct 13, 2014 11:29 PM
It was a scramble from start to the finish at the Conant girls sectional golf meet at Fox Run in Elk Grove. Maine South won the team title with a 328, while St. Charles North was second with a 331. The scramble began at third place, where both Wheaton Warrenville South and Oak Park tied with a 337. Wheaton Warrenville South was awarded the final team spot at this weekend’s Class AA state finals based on the fifth score, as Emma Field’s score was lower than the 101 from Oak Park’s Sophie Mouros. Tying for the 10th and final individual qualifying berth were Glenbard West’s Samantha Moody, Elk Grove’s Erin Walz, Lake Park’s Nicole Hansen and Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky. Each shot an 84 - they will try to settle the issue with a playoff beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

  • Singles sweep powers Geneva to UEC River crown Oct 11, 2014 9:31 PM
The Upstate Eight Conference River girls tennis championship had a rousing series of doubles title matches Saturday morning at Bartlett. But Geneva had already taken care of business in the singles finals at Larkin.

  • WW South’s Cepeda takes Stampede title Oct 11, 2014 3:17 PM
Batavia coaches had a plan for Patrick Redmond Saturday at the West Aurora Stampede, but the senior had his own ideas. Redmond went out at lightning quick pace and was able to keep it up, running a career-best time of 15:28 to take third while leading the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in the 13-team field despite missing No. 1 runner Ryan Wieties.

  • St. Charles North takes 2nd at own invite Oct 11, 2014 9:12 PM
For the past two weeks, St. Charles North’s girls swim team has done some serious training without any competitive interruptions. The North Stars went a midseason fortnight without dual meets or invitationals. That training-only period ended Saturday when the North Stars hosted the 15th annual St. Charles North Invitational, and they showed the hard work is paying off with a second-place finish to Neuqua Valley.

  • Neuqua Valley races to Stampede crown Oct 11, 2014 3:24 PM
For much of the West Aurora Stampede Saturday at Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora, Streamwood senior Gabby Juarez looked around and didn’t see anyone in sight. That was both a good thing — Juarez won the 14-team invite in 17:32, 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Emily Martin from Rosary — and a bit of a letdown that the competition she was hoping would push her did not race.

  • Batavia powers past Elgin Oct 11, 2014 12:26 AM
After winning a state title last year the Batavia Bulldogs football team has been dealing with the pressure that comes with the high expectations to repeat since the season began. So far they are handling it just fine. On Friday night the Bulldogs crossed off the first item on a long list of goals by clinching a playoff berth with a 48-13 Upstate Eight River Division win at Elgin. Next week the Bulldogs will look to achieve the second item on that list, a divisional title when they square off against Geneva.
