    It seems to be the season of the 5-2 girls tennis dual meet scores in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. After both Batavia and St. Charles North dropped recent 5-2 decisions to conference leader Geneva, the teams hooked up in a head-to-head battle of their own Thursday afternoon with the hopes of staying within striking distance of the Vikings.

    Several runners commented after Kaneland’s 45th annual Larry Eddington Invitational last Saturday that they preferred the new course at the high school instead of the traditional site at Elburn Woods. One big reason is Elburn Woods is known to be one of the more challenging courses especially because of a hill that tests even the most fit runners. There wasn’t any such elevation to conquer at Kaneland’s new course.

    Trailing only 12-7 at the half against a powerful Batavia team, the St. Charles East football team looked like it wanted to add its own spin to the Saints’ homecoming theme of “Enchanted East.” But Batavia had all of the magic in the second half of the Upstate Eight River clash Friday night, piling up 21 third-quarter points on the way to a 40-7 victory, the Bulldogs’ 21st straight in conference action.

The Bulldogs (7-1-1, 3-0) departed Norris Stadium with additional faith and belief after they knocked the Saints (8-1, 2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with their 1-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory.

Scoring on 6 of their 7 first-half offensive possessions while also adding a defensive touchdown, the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0) put their potent attack on display during a 49-6 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory over visiting Larkin (0-3, 0-1) Friday night in Batavia.
