    Tara Zufan didn’t hesitate in stating how she would celebrate the first home run of her life. “I’m going to DQ,” the Batavia junior said. “It’s a little hot.” Zufan picked a perfect time for that first homer, socking a grand slam high over the left-field fence to cap Batavia’s 7-run fifth inning and lead the Bulldogs to a 10-4 win over Metea Valley Monday in Batavia.

  • Doubles play nets St. Charles North sectional title May 24, 2014 9:19 PM
    St. Charles North’s Aaron Amburgey and Grant Spellman approached Saturday’s sectional doubles championship match against Lake Park’s Jack Millikan and Luke Szulczynski unaware of its overall significance. Perhaps that was a good thing. Amburgey and Spellman rallied from a 3-2 second-set deficit to earn a 6-2, 6-3 victory that ultimately propelled the North Stars to their first sectional team tennis title since 2011 at St. Charles East. St. Charles North finished with 22 points while the host Saints had 20.

    lNaperville Central dominated the Waubonsie Valley sectional, earning its first sectional plaque since 2011. Naperville Central finished with 29 points, followed by Marmion with 16 and Metea Valley with 13.

    Admittedly, St. Charles North girls soccer coach Ruth Vostal doesn’t keep track of how many consecutive regional championships her teams have captured. “I swear I keep saying it’s 10 in a row and someone said, ‘no, it’s 12,’” Vostal said after the North Stars’ 2-0 victory over Batavia (12-9-1) during Friday’s Class 3A Addison Trail regional finals. “Somebody must have figured out what it is.”

     
  • Schaumburg pushes to sectional crown May 24, 2014 12:32 AM
    Schaumburg won its first boys track and field sectional title since 1983 by prevailing when pushed. Take the 800-meter relay, for instance. The Saxons entered Friday’s Class 3A Bartlett sectional held at Memorial Field in Elgin as the clear favorite with the best seed time, but a bad handoff tested their composure and their coach’s nerves.

    Karina Liz and Nicole Sreenan performed like seasoned veterans on the opening day of the girls state track and field meet. Liz, the Aurora Central Catholic reigning state runner-up at 800 meters, and Sreenan, a freshman 400 wunderkind for Kaneland, authored the top times in Class 2A preliminaries at their respective distances Friday at Eastern Illinois University.

     
  • Rosales’ goal helps Batavia past Fremd May 22, 2014 10:33 PM
    Karina Rosales’ magnificent late goal stunned No. 9 seed Fremd and sent No. 8 Batavia into the Addison Trail regional final Friday against top-seed St. Charles North. The junior’s stunning 22-yard blast helped her club earn a hard fought 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon to end the hopes of the Vikings (7-11-1).

    There are a grand total of five Class 3A schools in the Tri-Cities when it comes to girls track and field. But St. Charles East, West Aurora and Geneva produced three of the top-five times in the state in the 1,600-meter relay last week at the Metea Valley sectional.

    The fifth inning started innocently enough for the Batavia softball team when St. Charles East starting pitcher Haley Beno grounded out to third. But it would be the final batter the Bulldogs would retire. Ten consecutive batters reached base for the Saints, and pinch-runner MacKenzie Meadows terminated the schools’ Upstate Eight Conference River matchup by scoring the ninth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

    With each passing game, Batavia’s baseball team is inching closer toward capturing the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship. The Bulldogs (23-3-1, 18-2-1) took another major step on their title pursuit with Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Charles North (17-10, 12-9).

     
  • Wins, PRs come for Neuqua Valley May 16, 2014 12:42 AM
    Neuqua Valley boys track coach Mike Kennedy provided his athletes a simple message for Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Elgin’s Memorial Stadium. “He told us, every race you go into, either you win or you PR, because you win either way,” said Wildcats junior Zac Espinosa. He achieved both in the 400-meter run, edging teammate Nick Rafacz while setting a personal record at 49.33 seconds. Neuqua Valley did win either way, both in the Valley Division and among all 14 UEC teams. In the first year of a post-Lake Park UEC, the Wildcats earned a total of 131 points, a fair cushion over Waubonsie Valley’s 109 and River Division winner Batavia’s 103.
