There is certainly not a dearth of potential all-state wrestlers in the Upstate Eight Conference this season. Friday night at Geneva, St. Charles East, the defending tournament champion, and Metea Valley, on the cusp of its first Valley Division title in program history, advanced seven competitors to the semifinals on Saturday.

  • Geneva rallies to sweep Batavia Jan 22, 2015 10:54 PM
Nate Navigato was once again the scoring leader for the Geneva boys basketball team Thursday night, but the squad could not have swept its season series against Batavia without Michael Landi. Navigato, the Vikings’ Buffalo-bound standout, led both teams in the Upstate Eight River game in Geneva with 23 points. But it was Landi who hit a critical 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer and then scored 3 conventional field goals in the fourth quarter to help seal the Vikings’ 57-47 victory.

  • Geneva’s inside-outside game sinks Batavia Jan 22, 2015 9:32 PM
From the time Janie McCloughan went down with a concussion late in Geneva’s fifth game of the season, it’s been a familiar struggle for the Vikings to get their entire lineup on the court. From McCloughan to Grace Loberg to Abby Novak it never seems Geneva can put all its pieces on the court at the same time — something the program knows all too well. The Vikings still aren’t quite there, they are missing Kate Rogers with an ankle injury, but they were as healthy as they have been in awhile and put on a show Thursday night in a lopsided 66-36 win over Batavia.

Playing a mid-morning basketball game on a day off from school can pose its share of problems for any high school student-athlete. However, Monday’s 7 a.m. bus ride and 9:30 a.m. tip-off time failed to deflate the energy from Batavia’s girls basketball team.

  • Batavia romps to UEC River crown Jan 15, 2015 11:01 PM
The pageantry was elevated to a new level when the Doranski brothers took the mat at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre Thursday night. The Batavia wrestlers needed all of 51 combined seconds to secure back-to-back falls. The Bulldogs’ showdown with archrival Geneva never came to fruition as the siblings’ consecutive pins at 113 and 120 pounds nearly equaled the entire Viking output.

  • St. Charles North slows down Batavia Jan 9, 2015 11:47 PM
Batavia coach Kevin Jensen called timeout in the second quarter against St. Charles North and implored his team to “stop shooting 3s!” The Bulldogs had missed all 10 attempts at that point. Problem for Batavia is the North Stars didn’t make things any easier when the Bulldogs went inside. St. Charles North held Batavia to 29 percent shooting — including 4 of 26 in the first half — to win the Upstate Eight River battle 47-34.
