  • St. Charles North slows down Batavia Jan 9, 2015 11:47 PM
Batavia coach Kevin Jensen called timeout in the second quarter against St. Charles North and implored his team to “stop shooting 3s!” The Bulldogs had missed all 10 attempts at that point. Problem for Batavia is the North Stars didn’t make things any easier when the Bulldogs went inside. St. Charles North held Batavia to 29 percent shooting — including 4 of 26 in the first half — to win the Upstate Eight River battle 47-34.

  • Bonus victory for Conant against Batavia Dec 31, 2014 6:15 PM
Playing a bonus fifth game required some bonus time Wednesday afternoon in Elmhurst. Staging its third fourth-quarter comeback in as many days, Conant (7-6) rallied from an 8-point deficit in the final two minutes to force overtime against Batavia on Brandon Vinson’s driving layup with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Trailing 55-53 late in overtime, the Cougars extended the game into a second extra session on Danny Sotos’ inside basket with 8 seconds left. Conant grabbed the lead for good on a cold-blooded 3-pointer from freshman Ben Schols — his only shot attempt of the game — and escaped with a thrilling 61-58 double-overtime victory over Batavia (9-6) to claim the consolation championship in the 41st annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School.

Playing a game on New Year’s Eve was one of the goals that Batavia’s basketball team had coming into the 41st annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School. The Bulldogs (9-5) will get their wish after Tuesday night’s 58-45 victory over Sandburg (5-7) in the consolation semifinals.

  • Andrews scores 28, lifts Huntley over Batavia Dec 26, 2014 9:42 PM
In a 16-team holiday tournament, the first-round clash between the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds promises to be competitive. On the down side, the winner has to face the top seed in the quarterfinals. Friday morning at the Montini Christmas Tournament, Huntley junior Ali Andrews, who has orally committed to Illinois, pumped in 22 of her game-high 28 points in the opening half to propel the Raiders past Batavia 43-37 in Lombard. Huntley (8-3) will meet host Montini Saturday afternoon.

  • Oswego loss leaves Batavia looking for answers Dec 26, 2014 10:42 PM
There are many reasons why teams don’t play their best. Some are easy to explain. Others are head scratchers. Batavia’s 64-47 loss to Oswego in Friday’s opening round of the 41st annual York Jack Tosh Holiday Classic fell into the latter category for Bulldogs head coach Jim Nazos.

Hannah Frazier walked out of Batavia’s locker room Saturday at Oswego’s Hoops for the Troops with a bucket filled with 1,000 gum balls. It might take awhile for Frazier to chew all that gum— perhaps even longer than it took her to put her name in the Batavia record books.

  • Geneva edges Wheaton co-op at Illinois Best Dec 20, 2014 10:09 PM
It’s taken longer than expected, but the defending state all-around champion finally competed again as an all-arounder. Geneva sophomore Claire Ginsberg won the IHSA title in February earlier this year, but a knee injury and illness limited her to a two-event specialist in the team’s five previous meets. Ginsberg certainly didn’t look like someone who has been out of commission for very long as she was the best during Saturday’s Illinois Best Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville, winning the all-around title with a 37.225 and helping Geneva edge Wheaton co-op, 72.25 to 71.725 for the team championship.
