  • St. Charles squads trying to clear Larkin hurdleMar 1, 2014 12:00 AM
It is go time. As in win or go home time for our local high school basketball teams that begin Illinois High School Association Class 4A and 3A regional tournament action this week.

  • Geneva holds up the sectional plaque as it celebrates a 48-24 win over Batavia in the Class 4A Addison Trail sectional title game in Addison on Thursday.

    Geneva's patience pays offFeb 27, 2014 12:00 AM
Sometimes a coach's greatest attribute is patience. Due to an assortment of injuries and other variables, Geneva girls basketball coach Sarah Meadows has seemingly waited all year to put a complete roster full of players on the floor. Judging from the Vikings' 48-24 Class 4A sectional championship victory over Batavia Thursday night at Addison Trail, that patience definitely has paid off.

  • Wells shoots South Elgin past BataviaFeb 27, 2014 12:00 AM
A nasty bout of the flu forced Darius Wells to miss South Elgin’s boys basketball practice on Monday and a half-day of school on Tuesday. Perhaps that’s why the senior guard turned in a Michael Jordan-esque performance Tuesday night at Batavia. In a game reminiscent of the former Chicago Bulls star’s 38-point effort while battling the flu to beat the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Finals, Wells fought through his 48-hour illness to pour in 32 points, including a career-best eight 3-pointers, and propel the Storm to a 71-59 victory over the Bulldogs in the Upstate Eight Conference sixth-place crossover game.

  • Loebel’s return making major impact for GenevaFeb 27, 2014 12:00 AM
Michaela Loebel might have had the worst seat in the house when Geneva played Batavia last month, having to sit in street clothes on the Vikings’ bench while Liza Fruendt scored 51 points in the Bulldogs’ second straight win over Geneva. What a difference it makes for Geneva to have Loebel back on the court. She got her first start since returning from a knee injury Thursday night in the Class 4A Addison Trail sectional championship game, and the senior played a large role in holding Fruendt to 10 points — 15 below her average — in the Vikings’ 48-24 victory.

Rivals Batavia, Geneva meet for sectional titleFeb 26, 2014 12:00 AM
Batavia coach Kevin Jensen had some good-natured advice for his counterpart Sarah Meadows at Geneva before a memorable night of action tipped off Tuesday at the Class 4A Addison Trail girls basketball sectional. “I told her not to lose her voice tonight because I didn’t want her quiet on Thursday,” Jensen said. Suffice it to say, Meadows won’t be quiet Thursday night — nor will the hundreds of fans from Batavia and Geneva who will be packing the Addison Trail gym for one of the biggest games ever played in any sport between the neighbors and longtime rivals.

Nobody said making history would be easy, not even with a 13-point lead and five minutes left on the verge of the first sectional win in program history. That's where No. 3 seed Batavia found itself Tuesday night in the Class 4A Addison Trail sectional semifinals, leading No. 2 Downers Grove North 52-39 after Liza Fruendt swished her seventh 3-pointer of the game.

  • Marmion earns another downstate voyage Feb 25, 2014 12:00 AM
Mt. Carmel wrestling coach John Kading knew the odds were not in favor of the Caravan in its Class 3A sectional dual against Marmion on Tuesday night at Marist. “We were hoping to win the coin toss, which we did,” Kading said. Not much else went right for Mt. Carmel the rest of the night in Chicago. Marmion won 10 of the 12 contested matches and cruised into the Elite Eight for the third time in the last five years with a 44-18 victory. The Cadets (13-3), the defending state runners-up, will face Plainfield Central, which turned back Moline at LaSalle-Peru, Saturday morning in Bloomington.

  • Batavia, Geneva aiming for sectional surprisesFeb 24, 2014 12:00 AM
Back on a cold November night in 2006, Batavia and Geneva met in the Class 6A football semifinals with a berth in the state championship game on the line. It certainly was a memorable night — not just for the Bulldogs’ win and first trip to state but the size of the crowd and electric atmosphere at Burgess Field — and now the school’s two girls basketball programs are each a win away from perhaps the biggest game in the rivalry since.

  • St. Charles East wins at Batavia’s paceFeb 15, 2014 12:00 AM
If the outcome of a boys basketball game were determined by which team controls tempo most often, Batavia beats St. Charles East on Saturday night. But that’s not how it works, and St. Charles East had just enough track-meet moments to escape with a 59-52 road win in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.
