Batavia, Geneva split doubleheaderMay 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva didn’t look at Saturday’s doubleheader at Batavia as a chance to play spoiler, but the Vikings did deliver a blow to the Bulldogs’ bid for an Upstate Eight Conference River title. Tony Landi tossed a complete game in the second game, using pinpoint command in a 0-walk outing to give the Vikings a 6-3 victory after the Bulldogs had won the opener by the same 6-3 score. Batavia (19-5, 13-5) fell a game behind St. Charles East (16-7, 14-4) in the River race while Geneva (14-11, 11-9) gave itself a chance to win the series from Batavia when the teams meet for the rubber match Tuesday in Geneva.

Kaneland repeats as County champs May 3, 2013 12:00 AM
From Friday's initial field events to the final relay, Kaneland kept the pressure on the other squads at the annual Kane County boys track and field meet at Burlington Central to win its second straight title and third in school history. The Knights scored 117 points to outdistance second-place St. Charles North (101) on a chilly, windy night on Rocket Hill, buoyed by two victorious relay teams and strong performances from hurdler Dylan Nauert, thrower Nate Dyer and sprinter Brandon Cottier, among others. West Aurora placed third (82), followed by Geneva (61), Batavia (52.5), Burlington Central (50), Marmion (25.5) and South Elgin (19).

Upstate Eight girls meet postponed until Friday May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Due to inclement weather and safety concerns, the Upstate Eight Conference girls track and field meet was postponed Thursday night and will resume Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Field in Elgin. Elgin Athletic Director Paul Pennington and the UEC track coaches met five times in a span of an hour after the first lightning strike occurred around 5:45 p. m. and agreed that it was in the best interest of the student-athletes to keep them safe and postpone the meet.

FieldTurf making East Side Complex a popular place Apr 30, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a number of advantages in being a resident of St. Charles. Both of the city's high schools — St. Charles North (21st) and St. Charles East (39th) — were recently named to the "Top 50" annual list published by U.S. News & World Report that ranks each state's high schools. They were the only 2 Kane County high schools to make the list. Both high schools were also recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Searcy blast seals Geneva’s win Apr 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Kristen Searcy has not seen too many inside pitches lately. "I get a lot of outside pitches," the Geneva senior said. But the Vikings' third-baseman produced the coup de grace Monday afternoon in Batavia, blasting a 3-run home run to right-center field with two outs in the sixth-inning to double the Vikings' lead over the host Bulldogs. Haley Orwig recorded the final five outs for Geneva in relief of Emily Plocinski as Geneva captured the Upstate Eight Conference River Division softball game 9-4.

St. Charles North shuts out Batavia Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
The only thing that kept St. Charles North sophomore Abby Howlett in the park Friday was the park itself. Howlett's blast in the first inning one-hopped the 230-foot sign in center field at Batavia. If she was playing on her home field or almost any other in the area, Howlett's ball would have sailed way over the fence. As it was, Howlett settled for a 2-run double, then later added a 2-run single in the seventh inning, the bookends of a 6-0 St. Charles North victory in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division matchup.

West Aurora wins 4th straight Kane County title Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Emma Spagnola was back in her normal routine. The West Aurora returning all-state performer in three events captured her specialty disciplines in one-sided fashions to lead the Blackhawks to their fourth consecutive Kane County Girls Track and Field Invitational Friday night in Geneva. West Aurora, which also received wins from sprinter Anita Saffa, thrower Maya Marion and its 400-meter relay team, scored 131 points to outdistance St. Charles East (100.5). Kaneland was third, followed by Hampshire, Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles North, Rosary, Burlington Central, Aurora Central Catholic, Dundee-Crown, Streamwood, South Elgin, Elgin, Larkin and East Aurora.

Batavia rallies, avoids St. Charles East sweep Apr 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Having been held scoreless by St. Charles East pitching for 16 consecutive innings, things didn't look too promising for Batavia's baseball team after falling behind 4-0 early Wednesday afternoon. But the Bulldogs (14-3, 8-3) showed their resilient side, staging a 3-run, 2-out rally in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4 before scratching across the go-ahead run without the benefit of a base hit in the sixth on the way to a 5-4 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory in Batavia.

St. Charles East blasts Batavia for 10th straight win Apr 24, 2013 12:00 AM
They've been playing like a perfect 10 for weeks now, but after a 10-0 win over Batavia Wednesday in St. Charles, the St. Charles East girls softball team is indeed a perfect 10. The Saints (13-3, 7-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference) won their 10th in a row, doing it in similar fashion to their excellent play all season. They got a great pitching performance from Haley Beno, who tossed a 2-hitter and struck out 10, their defense played error-free, and they bashed the ball up and down their lineup.

Batavia, Geneva battle to draw Apr 23, 2013 12:00 AM
On another wintry late April evening, Geneva and Batavia contended with the elements as much as they did with each other's girls soccer teams — and this is a rivalry where the teams always meet each other like Sumo wrestlers. The host Vikings and visiting Bulldogs battled each other through 80 cold, drizzly minutes at Burgess Field and when the teams headed to the warmth of their homes, each team had one goal to think on in a 1-1 Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

St. Charles East’s Starai shuts out Batavia again Apr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Pitching against Batavia for the second time in 7 days, Matt Starai didn't want to alter his game plan. That was for good reason. The St. Charles East (10-5, 8-2) senior tossed his second consecutive 2-hit shutout against the Bulldogs (13-3, 7-3) during the Saints' 1-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory Monday afternoon in St. Charles.

Batavia sweeps Larkin Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Luke Horton isn’t afraid to throw his breaking ball on any count in any situation. Batavia’s senior right-hander went the distance, allowing just 5 hits with 1 walk and a pair of strikeouts, as the Bulldogs (13-2, 7-2) edged Larkin (3-8, 0-7) 4-2 to complete an Upstate Eight Conference River Division doubleheader sweep Saturday in Batavia. The Bulldogs used an 8-run fifth to take the opening game, 10-5.

Big 2nd half lifts Batavia over West Chicago Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Down a goal and not playing particularly well, Batavia needed to find some spark to its play as the second half began in Saturday’s nonconference girls soccer match at West Chicago. Instead, the Bulldogs lit an offensive bonfire in the first 25 minutes of the half – scored three times and left town with comprehensive 3-1 victory.

Starai, St. Charles East blank Batavia Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Matt Starai simply pitched to his strengths on Tuesday afternoon. The St. Charles East senior right-hander demonstrated effectiveness with four different pitches, completely shutting down Batavia in the process. Starai completed his second shutout of the baseball season with a called third strike, but it was the Saints' defense behind him that told the tale in its 4-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory in St. Charles.

Expected to be good, Batavia baseball, Saints softball better than advertised Apr 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Prior to the start of the high school — I can't wait until it actually starts feeling like — spring season, two local teams were included among the annual preview stories. Nothing fancy, nothing new. Overlooked by some, Batavia's baseball team began its season last month with a game that wasn't even listed on its original schedule.

Green, Eustace lead Batavia past South Elgin Apr 12, 2013 12:00 AM
A mud-caked uniform was the small price Batavia left fielder Laren Eustace paid for making a catch that thwarted South Elgin's best threat in a 2-0 Upstate Eight baseball crossover win Friday. Protecting a 1-0 lead with the bases loaded in the third, Eustace charged a high flyball to shallow left off the bat of Storm cleanup hitter Joe Crivolio. He closed on the ball quickly, made a diving catch toward the infield and popped right up with chunks of cold, wet outfield grass and dirt spackled to his uniform.
