Time to award the best of a banner boys basketball seasonMar 19, 2014 12:00 AM
Area boys basketball fans had plenty to cheer about this season. Geneva (25-6), West Aurora (24-5), Kaneland (18-10), St. Charles East (18-12) and St. Charles North (16-10) combined for a 101-43 record (.701 winning percentage) and 3 regional championships. Led by Nate Navigato and Chris Parrilli, the Vikings were the epitome of true team basketball as they captured their first regional title since 1963 with a come-from-behind 66-63 victory over Bolingbrook. Here’s a recap of the 2013-14 season:

    Batavia opens with a blowoutMar 18, 2014 12:00 AM
A soggy playing field, chilly conditions and only one outdoor preseason practice could have formed an ugly trifecta for Batavia High School’s 2014 girls soccer opener Tuesday night. But you never would have suspected that the Bulldogs faced any of these challenges by the way they played. Batavia erupted for four goals in the first 21 minutes, 53 seconds of the first half en route to a 5-0 non-conference victory over Plainfield Central at Bulldog Stadium.

  • Bolingbrook knocks out BataviaMar 4, 2014 12:00 AM
It was a fateful minute for the Batavia boys basketball team. After spotting third-seeded Bolingbrook a 16-point lead in the opening quarter, the Bulldogs were revitalized by five different players connecting from beyond the arc in the second quarter. But the Raiders seized command, restoring their game-long double-digit lead in the process, by ending the first half with the final 5 points.

  • Loebel’s return making major impact for GenevaFeb 27, 2014 12:00 AM
Michaela Loebel might have had the worst seat in the house when Geneva played Batavia last month, having to sit in street clothes on the Vikings’ bench while Liza Fruendt scored 51 points in the Bulldogs’ second straight win over Geneva. What a difference it makes for Geneva to have Loebel back on the court. She got her first start since returning from a knee injury Thursday night in the Class 4A Addison Trail sectional championship game, and the senior played a large role in holding Fruendt to 10 points — 15 below her average — in the Vikings’ 48-24 victory.

  • Wells shoots South Elgin past BataviaFeb 27, 2014 12:00 AM
A nasty bout of the flu forced Darius Wells to miss South Elgin’s boys basketball practice on Monday and a half-day of school on Tuesday. Perhaps that’s why the senior guard turned in a Michael Jordan-esque performance Tuesday night at Batavia. In a game reminiscent of the former Chicago Bulls star’s 38-point effort while battling the flu to beat the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Finals, Wells fought through his 48-hour illness to pour in 32 points, including a career-best eight 3-pointers, and propel the Storm to a 71-59 victory over the Bulldogs in the Upstate Eight Conference sixth-place crossover game.
