  • Geneva, St. Charles North set for early showdown Dec 3, 2014 3:56 PM
Here we go. The Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball race came down to the final day of the season a year ago, Batavia and Geneva winning their games to share the championship. Batavia’s co-title was the most the Vikings have been pushed since Geneva joined the Upstate Eight. They have owned the area’s bragging rights lately, but to stay on top this year they are going to have to fend off several squads hoping to take their place. That starts with their first conference game of the year Thursday night and a trip to St. Charles North.

  • Plenty of pleasant surprises in opening week Dec 1, 2014 10:35 PM
We are off and running...The high school boys basketball season kicked off last week and provided plenty of entertainment for local fans. An exciting opening should equal an interesting season ahead. Here are some random thoughts:

  • Batavia wins Windmill Classic for 1st time since 2009 Nov 29, 2014 11:05 PM
Kamontez Thomas wasn’t sure what to expect in his first year of varsity basketball. So far, so good for Batavia’s junior point guard. Thomas made his first start Saturday night in Batavia’s final game of its 39th annual Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic. Against the pressure defense of Chicago Marine Leadership Academy, Thomas didn’t commit a turnover while chipping in 8 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds in Batavia’s 61-46 victory.

  • Peez lifts Batavia with pressure free throws Nov 28, 2014 11:51 PM
Sitting on the bench following a St. Francis timeout, Batavia’s Chasen Peez had one thing on his mind — well, actually two. “Make these free throws, make these free throws, make these free throws,” said Peez. The 6-foot-7 senior center did just that, sinking both foul shots with 14.5 seconds remaining to give his team a 56-55 lead. When the Spartans’ Jason Sullivan misfired on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Bulldogs (3-0) erupted in celebration after their 1-point victory in Friday’s fourth day of the 39th annual Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic in Batavia.

  • Batavia blows out Kaneland Nov 26, 2014 10:52 PM
It appeared as though Kaneland had righted the ship after a disastrous opening against its former longtime conference rival. But Batavia was even stingier after the intermission. Wednesday evening at the Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic, the Bulldogs’ boys basketball team rendered Kaneland completely ineffective on the offensive end.

  • Bench sparks Batavia past WW South Nov 24, 2014 11:24 PM
Sure it’s only one win, but you can understand why a Batavia team coming off an 8-17 season felt so good after beating Wheaton Warrenville South 68-59 Monday night in the first game of their 39th annual Ken Peddy Classic.

  • Slow start costs Batavia at Trinity Nov 21, 2014 10:59 PM
The toughest part about Batavia’s trek to River Forest to face Trinity Friday night might not solely have been the fact that the host Blazers are a top-10 state ranked girls basketball team.

  • Batavia drops season opener Nov 17, 2014 10:51 PM
The sounds of basketball season being ushered in Monday night in River Forest were as unmistakable as the Proviso East defense was opportunistic. The Pirates more than lived up to their school nickname by swiping 17 Batavia passes, turning many into easy scores. Batavia opened its girls basketball season by producing ties on back-to-back possessions.

  • Aurora Christian’s Chada runs like a vet Nov 8, 2014 9:38 PM
PEORIA – All eyes in Saturday’s boys Class 1A cross country championship race were on Fithian Oakwood’s Jon Davis, and for good reason. He lapped at least a few competitors in the field in his repeat run to a state title at Detweiller Park. But behind him and runner-up Eric Ponder of Tuscola, who was 42 seconds in arrears, was the fresh face in the competition, Aurora Christian’s Tanner Chada. He raced to a third-place finish in 15:01.92 seconds, and then said he left something on the course on a windblown, cold day.

  • Geneva’s Altmayer takes 11th at state Nov 8, 2014 9:35 PM
PEORIA — Maybe it’s the running, and the way the body responds. Cross country runners often appear to have taken their last breath in the moments after crossing the finish line, but a half-hour later, they’re ready to do it again. Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer is an example of that ability to rebound. She finished 11th — eighth in team scoring to help Geneva to a 12th-place finish in Saturday’s Class 3A championship race — was typically exhausted, and then all smiles not long after.
