The Saints put themselves in position for the early-season showdown, first by coming from behind to upend St. Charles North last Saturday, and then by taking care of business against feisty Batavia Friday night.

Batavia sophomore Joe Posledni made it official four matches later when the 138-pounder outlasted the Saints’ Quinn Doherty in a 15-12 free-for-all.

Three players in double figure scoring, 11 scoring at least 2 points. It all added up to a 76-57 victory, one that looked as good to the fans in the stands as the numbers would indicate.

    Three area football players were named $5,000 college tuition scholarship recipients by the National Football Foundation on Tuesday. Seniors Chris Kelly of St. Edward Central Catholic in Elgin, Noah Frazier of Batavia and Matt Rahn of Aurora Central Catholic will be honored at the NFF Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall in Lake Forest on Feb. 16.

    As if trying to stop Hannah Frazier in the post wasn’t enough for the rest of Upstate Eight, the Batavia junior showed a new dimension to her game during the Bulldogs’ 54-32 win over visiting Streamwood Tuesday night. Frazier swished her only 3-point attempt, part of her game-high 22 points. With Harvard in the house showing their interest, Frazier hit what she said is the first 3-point basket she can remember in her three years of varsity basketball.

    I like to call it “March Madness” in December. Last weekend was rivalry weekend for 4 local boys and girls basketball teams, as Batavia played host to neighboring Geneva while St. Charles North visited cross-town foe St. Charles East on Saturday.

    Last season, West Chicago’s basketball team won 17 games and finished fourth place with a 6-6 record in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division. On Friday night, the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0) began life as a member of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division in a positive manner by hanging on for a 58-56 victory over host Batavia (4-1, 0-1).
