Marmion sends 7 to state Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Metea Valley wrestling coach Claudio Torres spoke for many of his brethren when sizing up the field of the Class 3A Shepard sectional Saturday evening in Palos Heights. "It’s like a mini-state tournament,” Torres said. “I have seen so many state qualifiers (from past years) get eliminated already. There are ranked wrestlers not getting out (to the individual state tournament this week in Champaign).” Defending team state champion Sandburg was the true measuring stick with 10 qualifiers, and the field included some of the top Catholic schools in the state. Marmion went toe-to-toe with the likes of Marist, St. Rita — its team-sectional dual-meet foe a week from Tuesday at Hinsdale South — and Mt. Carmel to lead the area programs with seven state qualifiers.

St. Charles East blows out Batavia Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East junior guard Dom Adduci started Saturday’s game against Batavia swishing long 3-pointers, making off-balance leaners and causing trouble for the Bulldogs’ ballhandlers. In other words, like most any Dom Adduci game. Except this night was a little extra special at St. Charles East, not just for Adduci but players on both sides of the Tri-Cities rivalry. St. Charles East hosted its first Hoops for Hope, an event to raise money for the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. Every player on both teams was introduced before the game with the player listing who he would be playing the game in memory and in honor of. Adduci named his mother Jill, diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. Jill Adduci was the chairwoman for the night which included numerous raffle items, a Jimmy V video presentation, the coaching staffs wearing sneakers, and at the end of the game players, cheerleaders and fans holding up a shoe in honor of cancer survivors. Dom Adduci got the Saints going early with 10 points in the first quarter. St. Charles East led 16-7 after the quarter and used a 14-0 run in the third quarter to turn the game into a blowout, winning 57-28 at a nearly packed St. Charles East gym.

Batavia catches up to Elgin Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Elgin boys basketball team hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter Friday night. The Maroons then didn’t hit another field goal of any kind for a quarter and half as Batavia didn’t allow the Maroons any open looks. The Bulldogs turned a 4-point deficit into a 14-point lead during the stretch and cruised to a 62-50 Upstate Eight River Division victory at Chesbrough Field House in Elgin.

Wentling’s 3s lift South Elgin past Batavia Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Through 3 quarters, South Elgin’s girls basketball team struggled to do much of anything offensively and trailed Batavia, 40-29. Then the Storm (16-10) finally found a hot hand in Nell Wentling. The 5-7 senior guard hit 3 fourth-quarter 3-point baskets to help force overtime and added her career-best eighth 3-pointer of the game — and 50th of the season — during the extra session as South Elgin rallied to defeat Batavia 61-56 in Thursday night’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover fourth-place game in South Elgin.

Batavia denies Streamwood piece of title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
For all the good things his team did on offense Saturday afternoon, Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen was most pleased with the Bulldogs’ defense. As he should have been. Batavia held Streamwood to its third lowest scoring game of the season and junior Liza Fruendt sparked the separation needed in the third quarter as the Bulldogs blew Streamwood out if its own gym, 65-40, in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action.

DeLaSalle prevails on special night for Batavia, Roberts Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Night of Hoops has a new name — an incredibly fitting, appropriate and well-deserved one at that — but the same daunting assignment that the home team has faced for the past 20 years. From Simeon to King to Proviso East to any of the state’s premier programs you can name, Batavia is going to take its shot at the best. DeLaSalle presented the matchup problem in the 2013 version, the Islanders’ tremendous mix of quickness, height and shooting proving too much for Batavia in their 59-47 loss at the 20th annual Jim and Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops.

Whether it's a Saints home girls volleyball match or boys/girls basketball game, Jones likely can be found sitting in his customary spot along the wall just to the right of the main entrance to the gymnasium.
