Piechota, a senior left-hander, faced one of his bigger challenges of the day when West Chicago loaded the bases and put the tying run on first with 2 out while trailing Batavia 4-1 in the top of the seventh of Wednesday’s Class 4A sectional semifinals in Schaumburg.

     
  • Green, Batavia shut down Willowbrook May 31, 2014 5:43 PM
    Pitching with a heavy heart due to his grandfather’s death earlier this week, Colby Green didn’t let his emotions get the best of him Saturday afternoon. The senior right-hander tossed a 1-hit complete game to help lift top-seeded Batavia (31-3-1) to an 8-1 victory over ninth-seeded Willowbrook (21-12) in the York Class 4A regional championship in Elmhurst.

    Jasper Koenen’s route into championship bracket of the boys tennis state tournament was blocked by Eddie Grabill. The Hinsdale Central junior ended the title hopes for Koenen (29-1) on Friday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.

    Pumped up after winning his heat of the 300 hurdles, his fourth qualifying event of the day, Kaneland’s Dylan Nauert summarized his physical status. “I feel better than I ever have on the track,” said the mustachioed senior, who overcame midseason hamstring and groin injuries to feel “100 percent.”

    Jasper Koenen got off to a flying state tennis tournament start Thursday as he dominated three opponents in the heat and sun to easily advance into Friday’s round of 16 where he meets Brendon Harris of Edwardsville at tourney host Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.

    Nobody said it would be easy. Batavia, which earned the top seed in the Schaumburg Class 4A baseball sectional, faced the brink of elimination after 15th-seeded Bartlett (14-17) grabbed a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning during Wednesday’s regional semifinal clash in Elmhurst.

    Tara Zufan didn’t hesitate in stating how she would celebrate the first home run of her life. “I’m going to DQ,” the Batavia junior said. “It’s a little hot.” Zufan picked a perfect time for that first homer, socking a grand slam high over the left-field fence to cap Batavia’s 7-run fifth inning and lead the Bulldogs to a 10-4 win over Metea Valley Monday in Batavia.

One year after finishing third in the girls Class 1A state finals, the Eagles’ five athletes to make the final day made the most of their skills.

  • Doubles play nets St. Charles North sectional title May 24, 2014 9:19 PM
    St. Charles North’s Aaron Amburgey and Grant Spellman approached Saturday’s sectional doubles championship match against Lake Park’s Jack Millikan and Luke Szulczynski unaware of its overall significance. Perhaps that was a good thing. Amburgey and Spellman rallied from a 3-2 second-set deficit to earn a 6-2, 6-3 victory that ultimately propelled the North Stars to their first sectional team tennis title since 2011 at St. Charles East. St. Charles North finished with 22 points while the host Saints had 20.

    lNaperville Central dominated the Waubonsie Valley sectional, earning its first sectional plaque since 2011. Naperville Central finished with 29 points, followed by Marmion with 16 and Metea Valley with 13.

    Admittedly, St. Charles North girls soccer coach Ruth Vostal doesn’t keep track of how many consecutive regional championships her teams have captured. “I swear I keep saying it’s 10 in a row and someone said, ‘no, it’s 12,’” Vostal said after the North Stars’ 2-0 victory over Batavia (12-9-1) during Friday’s Class 3A Addison Trail regional finals. “Somebody must have figured out what it is.”
