Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

  • No. 16 Bartlett shocks top seed Geneva May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Bartlett walked into the baseball postseason very relaxed. As the No. 1 seed, Geneva had all the pressure on it. After taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Bartlett continued to apply that pressure in a semifinal game of the Class 4A Lake Park regional in Roselle Wednesday. Geneva was never able to get the bats going and Bartlett scored both of its runs during innings in which it did not record a hit. With the shocking 2-0 win, the 16th-seeded Hawks (18-19) await the winner of today's game between Glenbard West and Lake Park in Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game.

Bartlett hangs on to nip Streamwood May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
The Streamwood baseball team didn't go quietly, but host Bartlett ended the Sabres' season just the same Monday. No. 17 Streamwood rallied for 3 runs in the top of the seventh, courtesy of Illinois recruit Richie Gorski's 2-run triple and a run-scoring groundout from Valparaiso-bound Dalton Lundeen. However, with Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle on first base after a two-out single, Hawks reliever Robert Sadowski induced a groundball to shortstop Ben Grear off the bat of Alex Morrow. Grear's throw nipped the future Northern Illinois running back at first base to seal a 4-3 victory for Bartlett in Monday's play-in game of the Class 4A Lake Park regional.

  • Bartlett finally claims share of UEC Valley May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The Bartlett softball team really didn't need a lot of motivation. But Kayla Haberstich's line drive home run over the left field fence in the top of the second inning sure didn't hurt. In the throes of a 3-game losing streak and in jeopardy of not at least sharing the Upstate Eight Valley championship that many had already handed to them a week ago, the Hawks responded Friday with a convincing 9-3 win at Lake Park. Bartlett shares the division title with Waubonsie Valley, the first conference title for No. 2 Bartlett since the Hawks went 20-0 in the Upstate Eight in 2006, prior to the league being in divisions.

Bartlett might yet celebrate a conference title this week. Amanda Minahan made sure the party wasnt on her home field. Growing Batavia program looks like a winner May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Batavia is finding an identity as a boys lacrosse program. Last year, the team was recognized as Aurora Christian/Batavia. This year, dominated by a roster of Batavia students, the team is known as the Batavia Bulldogs. Were still trying to build a program, honestly, Batavia coach Scott Salvati said. We have kids on our team, at least a third of them, who should be playing JV and were trying to play a varsity schedule. Next year well probably have a varsity and JV team, but still I like where were going heading into the playoffs.

  • Waubonsie puts Bartlett’s clinching party on hold May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Waubonsie Valley freshman pitcher Shannon Hohman picked up the win against Bartlett Monday. Credit Warriors rightfielder Mel Koulos with the save. Koulos made a pair of inning-ending catches to prevent Bartlett from scoring as the Warriors 3-0 victory sent the host Hawks to their first Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division loss of the season. It also snapped No. 2 Bartletts winning streak at 12 as No. 13 Waubonsie Valley became the first Illinois team to beat Bartlett since the Hawks lost 1-0 to top-ranked Glenbard North on March 29.
