    St. Charles East sophomore Keely Flanigan summed up the Saints’ winning approach to Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference girls track meet at Geneva, the last primer before next week’s all-important sectional meets. “Our goal was just to do the best we can and improve ourselves,” said Flanigan, who ran the second leg of St. Charles East’s winning 1,600-meter relay. “And if we happen to win, that’s good, too.” It went pretty good for the Saints, who happened to win it all, as it turned out. In a meet that decided an overall champion as well as River and Valley Division champions, St. Charles East was the clear-cut winner. The Saints amassed 142 team points to run away with the overall and River Division titles.

  • South Elgin sweeps away Bartlett May 5, 2014 11:02 PM
    The South Elgin baseball team completed its 3-game series sweep of rival Bartlett on Monday with the same brand of strong pitching the Storm used to win the first 2 games. Senior Tyler Brown held the Hawks to 7 hits and 3 walks and struck out 7 in an 8-2, complete-game victory in Bartlett.

    The Bartlett softball team is on a roll again. The Hawks ran roughshod over their competition this weekend in winning the Mustang Stampede at Rolling Meadows and running their win streak to 5 straight. They have now won 11 of their last 12 games as well.

     
  • Burlington Central falls twice May 3, 2014 7:16 PM
    Burlington Central loses 2: After the Rockets (7-6-2) downed Sycamore 3-2 on Friday in come-from-behind fashion, Central was unable to come up with a win at the Freeport Tournament on Saturday, losing 4-0 to the host Pretzels and 1-0 in the final minutes to Harlem. Goalkeeper Abbi Ciganek made 7 saves against the Pretzels and stopped 3 shots against Harlem.

     
  • A Saturday sweep for South Elgin May 3, 2014 6:15 PM
    The South Elgin baseball team is coming out of the weekend feeling a whole new sense of optimism. After knocking off Streamwood on Friday the Storm followed it up on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of 3-1 and 12-2 in 6 innings against visiting Bartlett in Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division action. South Elgin entered the weekend having lost 5 of its last 6, but has now surged back above the .500 mark at 9-7 overall and 6-5 in the Valley Division.

     
  • Students hold ‘hands-on’ trials in Kane County May 2, 2014 5:28 PM
    Students from six high schools held mock trials at the Kane Couty Judicial Center in St. Charles on Friday. Judges offered tips, and teachers said the annual exercise, organized by the Kane County Bar Foundation, helps students gain a greater appreciation of the judicial system. Aurora Central Catholic, Bartlett High School, Batavia High School, Elgin Academy, St. Edward Central Catholic and West Aurora High School students played roles of prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses and jurors.

     
  • Girls soccer / Fox Valley roundup May 2, 2014 10:32 PM
    Bartlett 6, Plainfield Central 0: Kendra Videckis rose to occasion once again for the Hawks, scoring 4 times and both Mariela Alba and Sarah Jurek notched 3 assists in a nonconference win at Millennium Field. Bartlett (10-5-1, 1-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes and scored 3 goals in each half. Taylor Tomasek and Mariah Martinez added goals each and goalkeeper Amanda Lozada provided a 6-save shutout. Burlington Central 3, Sycamore 2: The Rockets (7-4-2, 5-1-1) outscored the Spartans 2-1 in the second half to break a 1-1 tie at the half for a win at the Freeport Tournament. Cali Andrew scored Central’s tally while Cassie Ciganek, who assisted Andrew’s goal, punched one in unassisted and Anna McMahon added the game-winner. Abbi Ciganek stopped 10 Sycamore shots in net.

    South Elgin's Alyssa Buddle and Cassidy Westland made quick work of East Aurora in a 17-0, 5-inning Upstate Eight Conference win for the Storm.

    South Elgin topped Streamwood and Bartlett handled East Aurora on Friday in Upstate Eight Conference baseball.
