Firefighters say that a father and son's quick thinking after seeing a fire on Bridlewood Drive in Hoffman Estates, along with the help of some neighbors, prevented a home from more extensive damage. "We could have had a pretty substantial house fire," said Mike Figolah, assistant fire chief for the Bartlett Fire Protection District. "They did a really good job."

Traditions honored at Elgin firefighter memorial May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
About 50 area residents attended the Elgin Area Firefighters Memorial Service held Saturday at the Elgin Fire Barn #5 Museum. Traditions "define who we were, and who we are," Huntley Fire Chief James Saletta said. Representatives of about a dozen local fire departments attended the ceremony.

Schick Road in Bartlett was shut down for about an hour Thursday morning after a small school bus not carrying any students was struck by a vehicle whose driver had fallen asleep, authorities said. The bus’ driver, a 64-year-old woman, suffered what police called nonlife-threatening injuries in the collision.

The Bartlett Fire Protection District is placing new signs on their fire engines and ladder truck that say “Paramedics”, indicating that these emergency response vehicles have “Advanced Life Support” capabilities. These vehicles have the obvious fire suppression capabilities that most people are aware of, but they also have fully trained paramedics and the paramedic equipment. The personnel and equipment strategy has been in place in Bartlett since 2003 and is considered a best practice in the fire service industry.

Incumbent Donald Wisniewski and newcomer Kevin Wiley won the two seats on the Bartlett Fire Protection District board. Unofficial results showed Wisniewksi beating Martin Wallace by nearly a 2 to 1 ratio for the Cook County seat. Unofficial results, with all 22 precincts in DuPage County and 19 of 20 in Cook County reporting, showed Wisniewksi with 1,491 votes or 63.2 percent, versus Martin’s 869 votes or 36.8 percent.

The DuPage County coroner has identified a man who died last week following a house fire in Bartlett. The victim was 62-year-old Dinesh Baxi, the coroner’s office said on Monday. Baxi died on Thursday, March 10, at a small fire on the 200 block of Gatewood Lane.
