  • New restrooms coming to some Cook County forest preserves Nov 5, 2013 4:36 PM
    Installation has begun on the first of 10 new permanent toilet buildings for the Forest Preserves of Cook County. The restroom at the Bremen Grove Forest Preserve in south suburban Oak Forest is expected to open in mid-November. The remaining nine facilities will be installed in spring 2014.

  • Barrington High School grad faces murder charge in New York Sep 6, 2013 2:50 PM
    A Barrington High School graduate is being held without bond in a New York jail after being charged with killing an 18-year-old Long Beach woman. Maxwell Sherman is due to appear in court on Sept. 18, said Chris Munzing of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. Sheriff officials said the body of Lauren Daverin, 18, was discovered on a footbridge at 10 p.m. on Aug. 22.

     
  • Inverness mayor wants only Palatine rural fire district, not also Barrington Countryside Aug 31, 2013 7:46 PM
    Inverness Village President Jack Tatooles hopes an automatic-aid agreement will allow the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District to respond to calls throughout his entire village, given the longer distance to its western side from the two stations of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. “That Pepper Road station (in Lake Barrington) is so far away it might as well be in Wisconsin,” Tatooles said.

    Eight Barrington-area residents’ efforts to enhance the quality of life in their community have been recognized through their induction into the Barrington Area Council on Aging’s Hall of Fame. The inductees, honored during a recognition tea at Lake Barrington Woods, were nominated by local service organizations, churches, health care providers, nonprofits, the arts community and local governments.

     
  • Many concerned by Barrington, fire district split Jun 10, 2013 11:12 AM
    There are few government obligations as basic as fire and ambulance service, and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has a delicate but all-important transition to make in how those services will be provided for a 48-square-mile area on Jan. 1. The success of the transition will affect residents in parts of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Inverness and unincorporated Cook, Lake and McHenry counties.

    For a second time Tuesday, Barrington Unit District 220 board members held back from passing a resolution supporting either a Route 14 underpass or overpass at the Canadian National Railway crossing in Barrington. But the board appeared to be leaning toward supporting a non-specific grade separation at the railroad tracks at its next meeting on June 4.

     
  • 10 area townships accepting Paint-A-Thon applicants Apr 21, 2013 12:22 PM
    Applications are currently being accepted for the 26th Annual Community Paint-A-Thon on Saturday, Sept. 7. Under the program, volunteer teams are matched to do the scraping, priming and painting of eligible houses for free.

  • Dist. 220 board,teachers reach three-year deal Feb 6, 2013 5:10 PM
    The Barrington Unit District 220 board of education and teachers union have reached a tentative agreement on a three-year teachers' contract, avoiding a potential strike later this month, officials announced Wednesday. The agreement, formally announced in a joint statement on the district's website, barrington220.org, came after a negotiating session that began at 5 p.m. Tuesday and wrapped up about midnight Wednesday.
