    Barrington trustees Monday voted to join with five other villages and two townships in sharing the local cost of the Pace Dial-A-Ride service for senior and handicapped riders which the entire Barrington area has been benefiting from for years. For the past five years, the local share of the approximately $100,000-per-year service has been paid for exclusively by the village of Lake Barrington, Barrington and Cuba townships, and riders themselves from throughout the Barrington area.

    With barely three weeks before it formally launches its own fire department Jan. 1, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District announced Monday it has hired three battalion chiefs to oversee operations, two of them who until recently served as lieutenants with the Barrington Fire Department. The new hires — Ron Eilken, Scott Motisi and Jeff Tress — will each command one of the fire department’s three 24-hour shifts. They bring to the district 59 combined years of fire service experience.

    Installation has begun on the first of 10 new permanent toilet buildings for the Forest Preserves of Cook County. The restroom at the Bremen Grove Forest Preserve in south suburban Oak Forest is expected to open in mid-November. The remaining nine facilities will be installed in spring 2014.

    A Barrington High School graduate is being held without bond in a New York jail after being charged with killing an 18-year-old Long Beach woman. Maxwell Sherman is due to appear in court on Sept. 18, said Chris Munzing of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. Sheriff officials said the body of Lauren Daverin, 18, was discovered on a footbridge at 10 p.m. on Aug. 22.

    Inverness Village President Jack Tatooles hopes an automatic-aid agreement will allow the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District to respond to calls throughout his entire village, given the longer distance to its western side from the two stations of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. “That Pepper Road station (in Lake Barrington) is so far away it might as well be in Wisconsin,” Tatooles said.

    There are few government obligations as basic as fire and ambulance service, and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has a delicate but all-important transition to make in how those services will be provided for a 48-square-mile area on Jan. 1.     For a second time Tuesday, Barrington Unit District 220 board members held back from passing a resolution supporting either a Route 14 underpass or overpass at the Canadian National Railway crossing in Barrington. But the board appeared to be leaning toward supporting a non-specific grade separation at the railroad tracks at its next meeting on June 4.
