  Carpentersville village officials have finally received a blueprint filled with ideas on how to make Carpenter Park a better place to recreate. The question is how to pay for the ideas, ranging from a disc golf course to a gazebo, since there's a $400,000 price tag. “Dollars will drive the priorities of what gets done,” Village Manager J.   Minor injuries for 17 Algonquin students in bounce house accident May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
  Six students from Algonquin Lakes Elementary School were sent to area hospitals for evaluation Thursday afternoon after they were injured in a bounce house during an indoor school celebration, officials said. Another 11 students were treated at the school and released to their parents. There were no serious injuries.

  Their rocket crashed during a test run, but a Harper College-based team of science and engineering students took fourth place in a national NASA rocketry competition, besting big names like MIT and Northwestern. The Rolling Meadows frosh booked his place in today’s fourth round championship bracket after an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 9-16 seed Brandon Harris (24-7) of Edwardsville. The earned Galvin a spot opposite 3-4 seed Jeremy Bush, a four-time state qualifier from state power Stevenson. Schaumburg sophomore Vincent Lin will join Galvin in the round of 16 after a strong showing Thursday.

  Jacobs High School WYSE Team finishes first at regional competition May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
  The Jacobs High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering team placed first at the regional competition at Elgin Community College. Each student competes against other schools by taking college-level tests in two of six categories. Awards are given to first to third places for individual scores. Team scores are calculated from the normalized two highest scores in each category. The total team score is the sum of five normalized scores of which three must be the math, English and chemistry.

Ronald Wolter, was killed in action during the Vietnam War.   Theft charges dropped against ex-Barrington High administrator May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
  Theft charges were dropped Wednesday against a former Barrington High School administrator accused of stealing funds from the school's fine arts department. However, Julie Rachel Salk paid just over $5,000 in restitution to Barrington Unit District 220, claiming she was "ultimately responsible" for the missing funds, defense attorney Doug Roberts said.

  Eighth-seeded Buffalo Grove rose to the task at hand in Wednesday's Highland Park regional final — and quite a task it was. The Bison were facing Stevenson, the top seed in the 23-team Antioch sectional. Behind a dominant hitting effort from senior Evan Bunnetto, the Bison more than met the challenge. Bunnetto racked up 18 kills to go with 4 blocks and 7 digs as Buffalo Grove won 25-19, 25-23.

• A happy (Cary-Grove) homecoming for Barrington’s Wire May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
  Not very often does it come full circle for coaches like it did for Barrington baseball coach Pat Wire Wednesday afternoon. When rains forced the Class 4A Jacobs regional semifinal between No. 1 seed Cary-Grove and No. 4 Barrington to Cary-Grove's field, it set up an unprecedented scenario for the 1996 Cary-Grove graduate to beat his alma mater on a field he did pretty well on himself at one time. "He played outstanding on this field. I'm glad he's coaching and not playing. I mean, I wish he was playing for us," Trojans coach Don Sutherland said. "Pat had some great games here. He pitched for us, played short, played center, those are all the spots where you put your best players so he's won a lot of games here." Now Wire can say he's won a game at Cary-Grove as a coach. The Broncos (22-11) jumped out to a 4-run lead after two innings, only to watch it disappear and regain it with 2 runs in the fifth in a 6-5 upset of Cary-Grove, doing things Wire has preached to his team all season, something he learned from Sutherland: manufacture runs and play small ball. And the Broncos kept battling this time, something they did not do in the Mid-Suburban League championship game last Friday, a loss to Rolling Meadows.

  When she went to bat with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, the last thing on Jenn Claussen’s mind was hitting a you-know-what. “I had no intention of doing that,” said the Cougars senior pitcher. “I just didn’t want to strike out. I just wanted to get on base.” But you know what? She cleared the bases. Claussen’s grand slam over the right-center field fence all but sealed the Cougars’ 7-0 victory over St. Viator in the semifinal of Lions’ own Class 3A regional in Arlington Heights. The No. 4-seeded Cougars (9-15) advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship of today’s semifinal between No. 2 St. Edward and No. 3 Regina.

  A Willow Creek Community Church volunteer charged earlier this month with molesting an 8-year-old boy in February also worked for a Barrington Park District program that looked after children before and after school. Barrington Unit District 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard announced the connection of 19-year-old Robert Sobczak of Hoffman Estates to the Barrington Park District’s KEEP program which was hosted at the school district’s Arnett C.   The St. Viator girls soccer team’s bid for another sectional final appearance was there for the taking on Tuesday night. The Lions scored three times in the second half and held a 2-goal advantage. But top-seeded Deerfield recovered to tie it in regulation and force overtime, where the Warriors scored again to beat fourth-seeded St. Viator 4-3 in a Class 2A Lakes sectional semifinal in Lake Villa.
