His Huskies had defeated Prospect in the sectional final in what was to be the last high school basketball game ever played at Forest View. The school closed later that year. “It all got started there,” Messer said. “Forest View was a great place to play and it was always the place they held the sectionals.” It will be the place again this Saturday, when District 214 wraps up the celebration of its Centennial with a full day high school basketball. All six schools in Dist. 214 will compete Saturday, with both the varisty girls and boys teams playing, with games beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the final game tipping off at 7:15 p.m.

Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

  • Barrington’s seniors step it up Jan 30, 2015 10:11 PM
It was senior night Friday for the Barrington boys swim team, and how coincidental that it was the seniors that provided the depth that led the Broncos to a 125-61 victory over Palatine. Sure, underclassmen like Colin Cross and Colin O’Leary had big nights, each winning two events and helping Barrington win two of three relays. But it was hard to ignore the work put in by Broncos seniors like Matt Gouskos, who won the 50 freestyle in 23.36 and was the anchor on Barrington’s 200 medley relay B team that took second in 1:44.50. Then there was Chase Lesniak, who joined Gouskos and Andy Zhou and Jeremy Kleinjan on that 200 medley relay, and also took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.59). Gouskos and Lesniak also paired with John Lagoni and Matt Gersten to place second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.62, just behind teammates Cross, Brandon Schaff, Andrew Fish and Mitchell Gavars, who won in 1:32.88.
