But on a sun-splashed Saturday at the IHSA Class 3A state finals at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium, Reese caught lightning in a bottle for the second time. On her second throw in the finals, Reese unleashed a beauty, hitting 146-01 to propel her to the Class 3A discus title.

  • Drama aplenty through Day 1 of Stevenson sectional May 23, 2014 10:26 PM
It was a nearly perfect day for Stevenson tennis Friday afternoon, but the story of the day was the success of the Vernon Hills doubles team of David Dobrik/Nikita Lunkov. In dramatic fashion and on their home courts, the duo rode the wave of momentum right into next weekend’s state tournament. The sectional host Patriots easily advanced their two doubles teams plus sophomore Benjamin Bush in singles, while the Libertyville duo of Ben VanDixhorn and Stefano Tsorotiotis left little doubt as to their status at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Junior Kevin Hunt of Carmel will make his first appearance at state after a hard-fought straight-set victory over Brian Weisberg of Stevenson, while Barrington’s No. 1 team of Ishaan Jaglin-Scott Apmann (9-5) will join Hunt for their maiden voyage to the big show.

  • Back in form, Miller leads Barrington at Palatine May 23, 2014 12:50 AM
One month ago, the outlook for Barrington junior Scotty Miller was anything but bright. Having suffered through walking pneumonia and losing weight from his already slight frame, Miller looked like anything but the standout sprinter who medaled twice at the Class 3A track and field meet a year ago. Fast forward to the Class 3A Palatine Sectional and any signs of a weakened or broken down Miller were nowhere to be found. Miller captured state-qualifying berths in three events for the first time as he helped lead the Broncos to the overall team title on Thursday.

  • Barrington edges Hersey for MSL title May 21, 2014 10:17 PM
Barrington’s Mike Amato stood calmly at the service line with the Mid-Suburban League boys volleyball championship hanging in the balance. The Broncos, on their home court, led Hersey 27-26 in game three and were trying to hold off a frenzied Huskies rally. And Amato was ready for his big moment. “I just wanted to get the ball in,” said the outside hitter, “try to serve it where Coach R (Rob Ridenour) told me to, then be ready to play free volleyball and not worry about making errors.” And right on cue, Amato’s and his Barrington teammates’ worries were over as soon as the ball flew over the net. The serve got past the Hersey defense for an ace as the West Division champions won the MSL title with an 18-25, 24-15, 28-26 victory over East champion Huskies.
