Photos from the Fremd vs Barrington boys basketball game on Friday, Dec. 19, in Barrington.

  • Energy, outcome favors Fremd against Barrington Dec 19, 2014 10:31 PM
It was easy to spot Fremd boys swimming coach Kristen Newby on Friday night. She was the high-energy one with the big grin on the deck of her school’s pool, as she seemingly pep-talked every member of her team as its Mid-Suburban League West showdown with visiting Barrington unfolded. She had every right to be enthusiastic. As the meet wore on, she knew the score, literally and figuratively — her squad had a good chance to defeat the Broncos and in the process win the biggest dual of the young Mid-Suburban West season. Newby was still all smiles when it was over, as the Vikings swam away with a 104-82 victory, to head into the holiday break with perhaps an unexpected gift.

  • Barrington stands tall against Fremd Dec 19, 2014 10:59 PM
As if Barrington’s height, rebounding and defensive prowess isn’t enough, wait until the Broncos, as coach Bryan Tucker puts it, “get a little better at valuing the basketball.” A little bit better shot selection, especially according to the situation, and having key ballhandlers stay out of foul trouble will help them be even more impressive than they already were in Friday night’s 65-57 Mid-Suburban West win at home over Fremd.

  • Young, tough lineups as Barrington faces Fremd Dec 18, 2014 8:26 PM
Friday marks the first big dual meet test of the season in Mid-Suburban West boys swimming and diving as two-time defending overall league champ Barrington pays a visit to Fremd. The Vikings placed third in last year’s conference meet — but it would be a mistake to put much emphasis on last year when looking at either of the teams this season. Both programs are trotting out lineups very different from last winter, with one thing in common: youth.

  • Barrington 220 nearing $2.35 million land acquisition deal Dec 18, 2014 11:42 AM
Barrington Area Unit School District 220 has until the end of the year to finalize a $2.35 million deal to buy 21 acres of open land across Hart Road from Barrington High School. The school board this week authorized a 15-day extension of the deadline.

  • Buffalo Grove’s Savage rolls 300 game Dec 17, 2014 9:52 PM
In 40-plus years of Mid-Suburban League girls bowling, there had been only six 300 games thrown until the gem last week by Karsyn Burgess of Wheeling put the total at 7. Now, make it 8. Buffalo Grove junior Joanne Savage stole the spotlight Wednesday, firing her first-ever 300 in the second game of her match against, of all teams, the Wildcats.

  • Huntley holds off Barrington rally Dec 13, 2014 9:35 PM
Huntley appeared to have nothing to worry about with a 23-point lead and less than five minutes to play in Saturday night’s nonconference girls basketball game at Barrington. But a furious rally by the Fillies made it more than just slightly uncomfortable for the Red Raiders as they held on for a 53-46 victory.

  • Jacobs dumps Barrington on Mack’s 3 at buzzer Dec 13, 2014 11:46 PM
Welcome back, Kenton Mack. Playing only his second game of the season on Saturday following a minor procedure to fix the meniscus in his right knee, the Northern Michigan-bound senior drained a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Golden Eagles to a 51-48 nonconference victory over visiting Barrington.

  • Barrington turns back Palatine Dec 12, 2014 11:14 PM
This was not your father’s typical Mid-Suburban West boys basketball game: 47-16 at halftime; a 38-point third quarter (by the team with 16 at the half) and 3-pointers flying and falling from just about everywhere. Somehow out of all that organized chaos, Barrington stood tall at home and emerged with an 82-69 win over visiting Palatine, which almost pulled off the most-improbable of comebacks.

  • Williams, Dellorto break 500 records in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 12:08 AM
Rolling Meadows earned its first dual victory of the boys swimming season, topping Elk Grove 136-44 on Friday in the facility both teams share at Elk Grove High School in a Mid-Suburban East dual. Both teams got to celebrate program records in the 500-yard freestyle. Elk Grove senior Colin Williams won the event in 4:53.61, erasing the mark that had existed since 1977. It’s already Williams’ second team record of the season, as he established a new benchmark the previous week in the 200 IM. The second-place finisher in the 500 free was Rolling Meadows freshman Josh Dellorto. He touched in a personal-best 5:01.14 and also broke the Mustangs’ program record.

  • Short-handed Fremd hangs on at Conant; Barrington rolls Dec 12, 2014 12:25 AM
Fremd’s girls basketball team overcame the absence of standout sophomore Grace Tworek on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to 16 games in the Mid-Suburban West with a 46-41 triumph at Conant. Senior Haley Gorecki led the Vikings (9-1, 3-0) with a game-high 22 points and also collected 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while teammates Erin Lenahan and Bryana Hopkins each chipped in 8 points. Brianna Lewis handed out 4 assists with 2 steals and 6 points.

  • Wheeling frosh Burgess busts out a 300 Dec 10, 2014 9:05 PM
The already boisterous atmosphere of a Mid-Suburban League girls bowling meet got an extra shot of adrenaline Wednesday night. Karsyn Burgess, a Wheeling freshman, fired the first 300 game the conference has seen since the 2010/11 season. A no-doubt-about-it final strike put Burgess in the MSL record books. “I’m really excited,” said the frosh. “I’m used to stringing strikes together, and after the ninth frame I was already pretty proud of myself. “Then came the 10th frame, and the pressure was on.”

  • Images: Barrington vs. Fremd, girls basketball Dec 8, 2014 9:38 PM
The Fremd High School girls basketball team hosted the Barrington High School girls on Monday, Dec. 8, in Palatine.

  • Fremd takes control, tops Barrington Dec 8, 2014 11:23 PM
You know the saying: a loss sometimes can be the best thing to happen to a team. “We learned a week ago that we have to come out and be ready every game,” said Fremd coach Dave Yates, whose club (8-1) is considered one of the finest in the state but suffered a recent 47-43 loss at Hersey. “We can’t just show up.” The Vikings showed Monday night why they received their lofty preseason ranking, blitzing visiting Barrington 71-36 to improve to 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban West.

  • Not one, not two — but three teams dazzle at Grant Dec 6, 2014 9:58 PM
Saturday’s Grant triple-dual meet was a pretty good example of what really competitive wrestling is all about. Unlike pretty much every other season when one team has walked away with a perfect 3-0 record on the day, this year three teams — the host Bulldogs, Stevenson and Barrington had to settle for going 2-1 in this annual showdown.

  • Barrington, Prospect finish 2-3 at Galatte invite Dec 6, 2014 9:55 PM
Lincoln Way Co-Op won the Al Galatte invitational at Rolling Meadows, with Barrington second and Prospect third thanks to some stellar performances. The Fillies’ Molly Blanke captured vault honors with a 9.35 and teammate Kseniya Kisleva won the uneven bars. Prospect junior Megan Donner finished second on floor, just edged out by Sammi Lococo of Carmel.

  • Reinhard, Barrington clean up on Rolling Meadows Dec 6, 2014 9:51 PM
Barrington’s William Reinhard likes to do nothing better than to clean up his teammates’ missed shots under the basket. The 6-foot-6 junior forward scored 12 points Saturday night that included 3 putback baskets in addition to grabbing 9 rebounds. Reinhard’s work combined with Rapolas Ivanauskas’ 21 points 8 rebounds and Chris Lester’s 15 points helped Barrington (5-2) earn a 71-54 decision at Rolling Meadows in a Mid-Suburban League crossover contest.

  • Rolling Meadows runs by Elk Grove Dec 6, 2014 12:42 AM
Rolling Meadows junior guard Megan King put on a 3-point shooting clinic in the first half as the Mustangs began defense of their Mid-Suburban League East championship with a 65-49 victory at Elk Grove. King’s game-high 21 points all came in the first half from long distance as Meadows improved to 6-1 overall.

  • Barrington holds off Thornton, Hoffman Dec 5, 2014 11:17 PM
These Broncos are some pretty cool ponies. Visiting Barrington withstood and even rallied back from a heated Hoffman Estates comeback to score a Mid-Suburban West-opening 63-57 win Friday night.

  • Schauble’s return to Palatine triumphant Dec 5, 2014 10:42 PM
You’ll have to forgive John Schauble if he looked a bit tired Friday evening. He had been up most of the previous night pondering his return as coach of the Palatine boys swimming and diving team. See, the last time he coached the Pirates was 1990. Since then, he served as Aquatics Director and physical education teacher at Stevenson, where he founded the Patriot Aquatic Club. But life is often cyclical, and there was Schauble on deck at the Palatine pool Friday, watching with a satisfaction as his charges roared to a convincing 118-67 victory over Buffalo Grove in a Mid-Suburban League crossover meet.
