The American Legion baseball state tournament is returning to the Northwest suburbs. Arlington Post 208, Barrington Post 158 and Northwest Legion Post 690 will compete, with play continuing each day through Saturday. The title game will be at either 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. Saturday.

Barrington’s Daniel Kubiuk really knows how to close things out. Kubiuk threw 8-plus innings of 4-hit baseball as Barrington rolled past Elgin 7-1 in the Division 2 American Legion title game in Barrington. It was the 29th win in the last 30 games for Barrington Post 158 (37-7) and the outcome sent them to the state tournament for the first time since 2009. They will play host Arlington Heights, which won the Division 1 tournament, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Recreation Park; Northwest Legion, featuring players from Elk Grove and Palatine, also earned a spot in the state tourney field.

  • Barrington High Business Incubator program poised to spread Jul 6, 2014 7:58 AM
To say that the Business Incubator program at Barrington High School had a successful first year would be putting it lightly. The architects of the class aimed to teach the tenets of entrepreneurship and business acumen to 16- and 17-year-olds hoped one student startup company would get $10,000 in seed money. Instead, five companies ended up with $80,000.

Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. We’re very excited about the direction our softball program is headed and the mark Nicole will leave here.” Pauly has a master’s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. A Palatine native, Pauly was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball at Palatine High School. • Barrington men go on a long ride for a very good reason Jun 19, 2014 11:38 AM
The desire to spend the summer making a difference led a team of young men to go on a coast-to-coast bike trip across America to raise money for a school in Honduras. Perhaps most impressive is that before setting out on their journey, none of the cyclists, which includes two brothers from Barrington, had ever done any long distance riding before.
