Barrington library to start $8.7 million renovation Apr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Barrington trustees Monday gave the green light to a long-planned, $8.7 million renovation of the Barrington Area Public Library, which is now expected to be completed in about 10 months. While most of the changes to the 35-year-old, 39,750-square-foot building at 505 N. Northwest Highway will be internal, there also will be a couple slight modifications to the exterior.

Friends of Barrington Library face uncertain future Dec 10, 2012 12:00 AM
For 56 years, the current incarnation of the Friends of the Barrington Area Library has consistently helped provide additional fundraising for the library through book sales. But on Monday, the Friends' board of directors bluntly asked the library board whether the services of its volunteers will be wanted anymore once a $5 million renovation project is done in 2014.

For the second time this fall, volunteers are expressing disappointment with a decision and what they see as a lack of adequate communication on the part of the Barrington Area Library. This time, it's Barrington resident Barb Germain who's sore over the library's rejection, for reasons she feels remain unclear, of a $20 Santa Claus figure she bought for her garden club's annual display in the library's youth services department.

This past weekend's book sale by the Friends of the Barrington Area Library was the last one until the library's planned $5 million renovation is completed in 2014, and perhaps the final one altogether. "People stand there with their mouths open. They just can't believe it," said Friends board member Sue Allman.

Barrington Area Library officials are mulling a $5.7 million renovation to help meet what they consider to be some lingering needs following the failure of the 2008 referendum that proposed a whole new building. “The library has really become more than a place with books sitting on a shelf,” library board President Donald Minner said.
