Geneva, Kaneland share County title May 4, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland boys track and field coach Eric Baron made a magnanimous gesture to his counterpart at Geneva, Gale Gross, after their squads tied for top honors at the Kane County Meet Friday night at West Aurora. After Gross informed him the Vikings won twice as many events as the Knights, 4-2, the Kaneland coach handed Gross the championship plaque. But the teams are still technically co-champions after Kaneland tied Geneva by finishing one place higher in the 1,600-meter relay.

Rockford East ends ACC’s run Mar 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Although Aurora Central Catholic trailed Rockford East by a relatively small 24-20 margin at halftime of Friday nights Class 3A Sycamore sectional final, the Chargers realized a golden opportunity had slipped away. The E-Rabs, determined to avenge last years 85-82 sectional final loss, clamped down defensively in the second half and unleashed their potent transition game. Five-foot-8 senior guard Darshawn Pumphrey-King and 6-foot-6 senior Steven McNease combined for 33 second half points to help Rockford East claim a 63-52 decision in front of a raucous capacity crowd.

ACC seniors leave their mark Mar 9, 2012 12:00 AM
If ever a team needed good senior leadership, it was this year's Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball squad. Faced with one bad break after another -- and seemingly one loss after another -- the wheels easily could have come off the Chargers' season. Instead Aurora Central, as has become its tradition, regrouped and saved its best basketball for the most important time of the year. The Chargers gave their fans four memorable postseason games, and those fans came out in droves for each one, the final one a standing-room-only setting in a 63-52 loss to Rockford East in the Class 3A Sycamore sectional championship game Friday.
