Matt Vogt has been about as rock-solid as they come for Libertyville's baseball team the last two springs. The University of Minnesota-Duluth-bound senior displayed his talent again Wednesday, hitting a pair of home runs in the Wildcats' 14-0 win over Round Lake in a North Suburban Conference crossover. Vogt finished with 4 RBI, and Kevin Calamari also had a big day at the plate with a home run, double and 4 RBI, as Libertyville improved to 20-10.
Monk pleads not guilty to child abduction charges, remains jailed May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
A Benedictine monk accused of attempting to lure four teens into his car on two occasions in Antioch pleaded not guilty Tuesday to child abduction charges that could put him in prison for up to three years. Thomas J. Chmura, 57, with a listed address at St. Benedict's Abbey in Benet Lake, Wis., entered his not guilty plea as his attorneys unsucessfully petitoned a Lake County judge to lower his bond to $50,000 and allow him to reside at his adopted father's home in Lansing, Ill.

As soon as Wauconda's baseball team finished its undefeated run through the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division, Bulldogs unfurled a splashy, colored banner, compliments of a generous parent. Included on the banner was Wauconda's NSC Prairie record: "12-0" Mind you, the sign was made in the morning — before the Bulldogs' 13-6 win over visiting Antioch on Tuesday. So if Antioch had beaten Wauconda, what would have become of the banner, which would have the Bulldogs' record incorrect? "I don't know," Wauconda coach Bill Sliker said with a laugh. "I guess I would have put it in the basement." Moot point now.

Taking control of the North Suburban Conference boys tennis tournament is starting to be an annual event for Stevenson. The Patriots netted another NSC title on Saturday, topping Lake Forest 38-28.5 for the top spot in the event hosted by Wauconda and completed at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Warren edged Libertyville 23.5 to 23 for third place. Jeremy Bush of Stevenson was victorious over Warren's Kristiyan Trukov in straight sets for the No. 1 singles championship, and the Patriots captured all three of their doubles matches over the Scouts.
