    The arraignment hearing for an Antioch Township teen accused of killing a teenage girl in a June street racing crash has been delayed until Sept. 25, authorities said Thursday. Jeremy Betancourt, 17, of the 41000 block of North Circle Drive in unincorporated Lake County near Antioch, was not in court after checking himself into a Streamwood behavioral health center nearly two weeks ago for depression and chemical dependency, defense attorney Jed Stone said.

    An Antioch-area teen was on probation when he took part in a street race that killed an Antioch High School student in Gurnee, officials said Thursday. Michael Dawson, 19, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of reckless homicide and aggravated street racing in the June 24 drag race that killed Cynthia Perez, 16, of Antioch.

     
  • Antioch teen charged in fatal racing crash remains free on $100,000 bail Jul 16, 2013 7:14 PM
    Despite a second attempt to increase bail, it will remain the same for a 17-year-old Antioch Township boy charged with aggravated DUI in the death of a teenage girl during a street race in Gurnee last month. Lake County Judge Raymond Collins said Jeremy Betancourt can remain free on $100,000 bail but said it will be reviewed again when the former Antioch High School student completes treatment at a Streamwood behavioral health facility.

    Bail was lowered Tuesday for a 17-year-old Antioch Township man charged with reckless homicide in the death of a teenage girl killed when he lost control of his car while drag racing last month in Gurnee. Lake County Judge Raymond Collins ordered Jeremy Betancourt’s bond lowered from $250,000 to $100,000, despite prosectors filing an additional charge of aggravated driving under the influence.

    The trial of a monk accused of trying to lure teenage girls into his car in Antioch has been pushed back to September. In the meantime, a Lake County prosecutor says monk Thomas Chmura, 57, has been compliant with court-ordered restrictions while free on bond.

    An Antioch Township man accused of murdering his longtime girlfriend rejected a plea agreement Monday that would have put him in prison for 20 years. Now, Michael Axtell, 41, is scheduled to go to trial later this month on first-degree murder charges in the death of Tammy Stone, 40, at their Antioch home in October, 2012.

    Antioch officials have hired Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service to handle emergency rescue calls in the village for the next six months. Superior replaces Antioch Rescue Squad, which severed its long — and recently strained — relationship with the village last month. Antioch Rescue Squad will continue to respond to emergency calls in Antioch Township.

    A former Antioch-area volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician already facing charges of having sex with an underage girl, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges involving a second victim. Matthew Bielecki, 40, of the 43000 block of Mary Avenue in Antioch, shook his head in shock as each of the new 29 counts of sex-related crimes were described to him by Lake County Judge James Booras.

     
  • Antioch Rescue Squad, village splitting up May 22, 2013 11:38 AM
    Antioch Rescue Squad, which became embroiled in controversy about a year ago, and Antioch village government are ending their longtime marriage. Village officials say they were surprised to learn the rescue squad declined a six-month extension. “After all the village has done to support ARS as it worked its way through sex scandals, alcohol and drug abuse, ARS slapped its partners in the face,” the Antioch mayor said.
