Despite being mired in controversy, incumbent school board President Wayne Sobczak held onto his seat on the Antioch-Lake Villa High School District 117 board Tuesday. With all 33 precincts counted, Sobczak collected 2,115 votes, making him the second top vote-getter behind fellow incumbent board member Ron Vickers.

Retired Antioch Rescue Squad Chief Wayne Sobczak said he was the "sacrificial lamb" when punishment was handed out in the wake of misconduct allegations involving the squad last year. In his first public statements about the controversies, Sobczak said squad officials were victims of political sabotage, but added that he and the rest of the squad are still loved by the community.

Lake County Sheriff investigators say they are looking at speed and weather in trying to determine the cause of a single-vehicle crash that killed two teens in Antioch Township this week. Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said Wednesday autopsies will not be done on Wittkamp and his passenger, Ashley Seay, 17, of Lindenhurst. Authorities said the teens were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police: Teacher caught smoking pot under bleachers free on bondFeb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Peter Mulloy, the Warren Township High School special education teacher who was arrested Saturday for smoking marijuana under the bleachers at Antioch High School during a wrestling tournament, is free on bond, police said. Saying it is personnel matter, Warren Township High School District 121 officials would not comment on whether Mulloy has been suspended. However, officials said he was not working at the school Thursday.

James Creighton Mitchell Jr., a perennial Republican candidate from Lindenhurst who had intended to run for seats on four government boards in April, can't do so because of potential conflicts of interest, officials have ruled. Antioch-Lake Villa Area High School District 117 has approved $65,000 for emergency repairs of a drain tile that is leaking under the gym. There has been a slight bowing of some of the flooring -- not enough to close the gym or warrant repairs -- but the district wanted to get out front before it escalates into a situation like it had a few years ago.

Friends of an Antioch man and his daughter who were killed when their single-engine plane crashed in a Wisconsin field called their deaths a "devastating tragedy." Todd Parfitt, 50, and Nicole Parfitt, 14, were Sunday when Todd Parfitt's Grumman AA1 crashed into a cornfield near the Burlington Municipal Airport just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Walworth County sheriff's officials said Monday.
