Goshe leaves Grayslake Central in good shape May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Nick Goshe gets a kick out of Grayslake Central soccer. The success of the school's girls volleyball, boys track and cross country, baseball, boys and girls basketball and wrestling programs get him equally juiced and make him proud to be a Ram. He's more than just a fan, though. He's also the head football coach. Well, he was until last Thursday, when he informed his players and Grayslake Central's administration that he was resigning. Goshe's passion, attention to detail, organizational skills, fresh ideas and love and knowledge of football were obvious even during his first two years as head coach, when the Rams won all of one game.So after two straight playoff berths and accomplishments that go beyond wins on the field, it's no surprise that the 33-year-old's desire for another challenge has resulted him moving on to what he hopes are "greener" pastures.

Jim Cornelison belted out the national anthem again. Hall-of-famer Denis Savard showed up to sign autographs again. Stevenson’s Miller charts a daring future Feb 1, 2012 12:00 AM
His 6-foot-3 frame figures to keep Carl Miller from piloting a jet for the U.S. Air Force. “I might be a little too tall to fly, from what I’ve heard,” said Miller, 210 pounds, muscular and tough. The Stevenson senior will settle for flying around the football field. He’s sky-high after verbally committing to the Air Force on Monday — about five months after the military academy offered him the chance to head to picturesque Colorado Springs, Colo., and play football for the Falcons, who have been earning bowl bids with regularity in recent years.

It all adds up for Jones at Libertyville Jan 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Do the math, and you don’t have to be Mike Jones to understand that the Libertyville football team’s 21-26 record since 2007 doesn’t make the grade. “We just have to build consistency on both sides of the ball,” Jones said. “It seems like we can never put it together.” On Monday night, the District 128 school board approved the hiring of the 43-year-old Jones as Libertyville’s new head football coach, hoping the longtime assistant can put together a program that not long ago was putting up numbers that a math guy like Jones loves.

Stevenson’s Miller navigates another state success Oct 15, 2011 12:00 AM
The drive, about a 200-mile dogleg right, was a good one. “We made it in three hours,” Stephanie Miller said happily Saturday night after arriving to her home in Kildeer from Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur. Stevenson’s peppy and petite junior — who’s 5 feet 3 “maybe with my new spikes on,” she says, and whose perspective matches her brilliant golf game — was equally pleased with her performance (drives included) in the Class 2A state tournament. No, Miller didn’t successfully defend her state championship. She settled for sixth, shooting a 5-over 77 Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 11-over 155, six shots back of champion Allison Walsh of Prospect (5-over 144). Hampshire senior Connie Ellett (plus 6), Crystal Lake Central (Coop) sophomore Lexi Harkins (plus 7), Buffalo Grove junior Grace Kil (plus 8) and Waubonsie Valley freshman Bing Singhsumalee (plus 8) rounded out the top five.
