  • Lake Park edges Wheaton for third Feb 23, 2014 12:12 AM
    It was a battle until the end for third place between Lake Park and Wheaton co-op Saturday at the Downers Grove North boys swimming sectional. The Lancers’ prevailed by one-half point, 182 to 181.5, thanks to their victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the day. However, team results in sectional competition don’t have the weight that the actual number of state qualifiers a school has achieved has. A sectional meet is all about being good enough and fast enough to keep your season going another week.

Leading the way for Glenbard was a pair of swimmers who are both candidates to qualify for the state meet and who form the nucleus of some pretty promising freestyle relay teams.

    One day after making only 2 of 11 free throws in a loss to Lake Park, it was accuracy at the charity stripe that helped Addison Trail’s girls basketball team earn its first win in the West Suburban Gold. The Blazers’ game-ending 11-0 run in the final 5:48 consisted of 11 of 14 free throws which secured a 51-39 victory over visiting Leyden on Saturday afternoon.

    With state power Lockport off at the high profile Dvorak Invitational this season and not on the guest list at the Ralph Krupke Wrestling Classic, Conant’s wrestling team took full advantage Saturday afternoon at Lake Park’ West Campus. Inspired by a stunning upset by Dan Andress in the finals at 170 pounds, and with help by teammates Bobby Alexander and Kyle Peister, the Cougars passed up the 16-team field to lift the championship trophy with 191.50 points.

    Wheaton North’s boys basketball team couldn’t have drawn it up any better. The perfect play at the perfect time. Definitely the perfect player. Matt Biegalski’s 3-pointer at the buzzer powered the Falcons to a 63-62 victory over Addison Trail in Monday’s opening-night action from the Blazers’ preholiday tournament.
