  • Housing crash pushed bigger tax load onto seniors Nov 13, 2013 9:03 AM
    A property tax relief program intended to save Illinois senior citizens hundreds of dollars on their annual tax bills has had the opposite effect since property values began their steep nosedive since 2009. Because of the way the "senior freeze" is set up, the declining value of properties is actually making seniors pay more than ever before. “It's the law of unintended consequences,” said Craig Dovel, DuPage County's supervisor of assessments.

    Knowing they won't get another chance to ask voters for more money until next year, several government bodies in DuPage County are seeking approval for tax increases in Tuesday's election. A variety of ballot questions will be decided, from Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200's $17.6 million proposal to replace an aging preschool to a proposed sales-tax hike in Winfield.

  • Man charged with trespassing at Addison home Jul 16, 2012 4:45 PM
    A Stone Park man randomly entered an Addison Township home and carried around a 6-year-old girl before he was restrained and arrested, authorities said Monday. Bail was set at $1 million for Marcelo Arellano-Garcia, 21, who appeared in DuPage County bond court on charges of battery and trespass.
